i just got this scrub from the body shop i wanted to know if this is alright to use while on accutane.
Water, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Pentylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Diatomaceous Earth, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sorbitol, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Isononyl Isononanoate, Jojoba Esters, Myristyl Myristate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Xanthan Gum.
thanks!
The only ingredient I'm concerned about is the diatomaceous earth, the scrubbing agent which may be too abrasive for the skin.
Quicky question: Does flaky skin necessary mean dry skin? i have never experienced so much flaking before. >.> I wonder if I am using too much aha and bha. <.<
Flaky skin does not always mean dry skin; it can be a sign of irritation. You may consider using an exfoliant only once a day.
Also, pure tea tree oil can be too irritating to the skin. I recommend diluting it with a moisturizer, aiming for roughly a 10% concentration of tea tree oil in the mixture.
Hey snowqueen. I had another quick question for you. Acne cleansers containing Salicylic Acid or Glycolic acid or both. Are these good to use. Ive read on websites that they are bad for you because they have a high pH level and besides that the ingredients dont have enough time to penetrate the skin since its massaged on and then rinsed off. But yet i've been to a few dermatologists and a few estheticians who have all given me cleansers that contain both of the above mentioned ingredients and when I ask they say thats not true, they are actually better to use and safe for acne prone skin. Whats your take? thanks again

i've been using it every other day for about a week and it's made my face irrated so i won't be using it anymore but do you have any suggestions to what i can use (mask or exfoliater) to make my skin smoother while on accutane?
hi Snow Queen. I just wanted to see what you think about Neutrogena's NEW Deep Clean Invigorating Foaming Scrub.
Heres the ingredients:
WATER, METHYL GLUCETH-20, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, LAURYL GLUCOSIDE, DISODIUM LAUROAMPHODIACETATE, POLYETHYLENE, PEG-80 SORBITAN LAURATE, PANTHENOL, DIMETHICONE PEG-8 MEADOWFOAMATE, POLYQUATERNIUM -7, SODIUM BENZOTRIAZOLYL BUTYLPHENOL SUFONATE, MENTHOL, ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, DISODIUM EDTA, DMDM HYDANTOIN, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, SYNTHETIC WAX, ULTRAMARINES, BLUE 1, FRAGRANCE.
Also could you please tell wats the different between sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate? are they different, or are they just the same, and they use ALS, because its not SLS that people are aware of and know its bad?
I started using this liquid soap on my face.
Baby-Mild:
Unscented: No Essential Oil
A mild, smooth soap for sensitive skin (but still be sure to keep it out of the eyes).
Ingredients: Water, Saponified Organic Coconut & Olive oils (w/ retained Glycerin), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Citric Acid, Vitamin E

The stuff written on the bottle is ahhh kinda religous weirdness, but not to difficult to overlook. It's very mild, & not super expensive. This thread is humongous..I'll admit to only reading the very start of it.
Why is it so hard to find a really plain & simple moisturizer..? I admit I prefer a cream..
Now though, I'm toying with the idea of buying a carrier oil or two, like kukui nut, or coconut oil and trying that. I see jojoba referenced lots.
I completly agree with your post. Over the 17years i have suffered from acne/sensitive skin i have probably tried everything you advise not to. At the moment i am not using any chemical products on my skin. I have come to the conclusion that they only hurt my skin and definatly dont work.
Hi DeeAgony. Have you tried aloe vera as a moisturisor. Its plain and simple just like you said. I use fruit of the earth's brand 100% aloe vera gel. www.fote.com
Yes I have...It doesn't really moisturize so well for me though..But, I'm still having issues with finding a decent balance for my oily skin. So, most of the time I'm trying to moisturize stripped skin, it seems to need something heavier than aloe vera gel.
Another thing I noticed was stinging..I'm fairly sure I tried that brand.
Never know, I may try it again. Thanks.

Medicated cleansers are generally no more effective than unmedicated cleansers because the active ingredients are not given enough time to work on the skin. In addition, most cleansers have too high of a pH for chemical exfoliants to work. If you let the cleanser sit on the skin in hopes of giving the active ingredients time to work, you're also giving the surfectants in the cleanser time to cause unnecessary irritation to the skin.
Dermatologists and estheticians are not always right; otherwise acne system's like Murad's wouldn't be around.

You can try any of the recommended scrubs in Part II of the first post to this thread like Aveeno's Skin Brightening Daily Scrub. An inexpensive mask you can try is Queen Helene's Mud Pack Mask (the Mint Julep Mask may be too irritating).
Hi again snow queen! What do you think of cetaphils facial cleanser for normal/oily skin? I noticed it does have a masking fragrance in it, but i've heard alot of good things about the cetaphil line. Thanks for your help.
Cetaphil's cleansers are OK, but there's much better ones available.
Page, you could probably use Apple Cider Vinegar, but diluted. I've heard it balances skin, so it hydrates and exfoliates dry areas, but at the same time it controls oil. I use this and my flakiness is nearly all gone.
Apple cider vinegar can be very irritating. It doesn't control oil; oil is really best controlled with oral medications as opposed to topical treatments.

Ammonium lauryl sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate are both detergents, though it is my understanding that ammonium lauryl sulfate is not considered harsh like sodium lauryl sulfate is.
The scrub you posted contains menthol, which can damage the skin with regular use.

The cleanser you mention above is a soap product, and therefore is too harsh to be used on the skin. Also, soaps tend to have alkaline pH levels, which encourages bacterial growth, though I'm guessing this one probably doesn't.
The reason why I reocmmend lotions over creams is bceause creams are more likely to contain the types of waxy thickeners which can clog pores. If you have used creams in the past and have experienced no problems, you can still use one.
You can use emollient oils like jojoba, but they work best when used over a moisturizer.
i was wondering if this sunscreen would make me breakout

Thank you very much for your reply. This is a liquid soap (castile soap), & so far I really like it. But I'll take it under advisement, & find which cleansers you recommend in this thread, give them a go as well.
Hey snowqueen, how are you doing? I recently found myself with a question on a product or two i was looking at. I didnt really know who to ask, dermatologists dont help me or my doctor, i joined this site and saw that you seem to know your stuff and figured you would be my best choice to ask. I am trying to switch my cleanser and acne treatment gel, My cleanser i believe causes acne or irritation and my acne gel doesnt really do too much. I found these products....
Cleanser [Removed link]
Acne Gel [Removed link]
Could you tell me anything about them, would they be too irritating or drying.....and do you think they would be decent products to use? they seem good and got good reviews, but ive found that lots of things that seem good and work for others dont always work for me, haha. But Thank you much for your help.
Im going to buy the Cetaphil moisturising cream soon. Here are the ingredients:
Purified Water, Glyceryl Polyglycerylmethacrylate, Propylene Glycol, Petrolatum, Dicaprylyl Ether, PEG-5 Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Cetyl Alcohol, Sweet Almond Oil, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Lactic Acid
[Removed link]
Thanks.
Also a question ive been wondering for so long.
Is it better to use a product that has SLS in it, but further down in the ingredients list, or a product that has SLES in it but it's the 2nd on the ingredients list?
Hi SnowQueen, thanks for your great advice! I was wondering if this Honey Cleansing face gel is any better than the Cetaphil gentle liquid cleanser?
Here are the ingredients:

It's impossible to say what will and won't cause breakouts because everyone's skin is different. However, your sunscreen looks very good and doesn't seem to contain some of the kinds of thickeners which are known for potentially clogging pores. Breakouts don't happen overnight; they take around two weeks to form.
