hi snow queen. what do you think of exfoliant that use charcoal particles for the exfoliant?

Actually, I've only ever heard of charcoal being used in masks, not as an exfoliating particle. Are you sure that the cleanser doesn't just contain charcoal and uses something else as the exfoliant? For example, many people think that St. Ives Apricot Scrub uses apricot as the exfoliant, when it uses walnut shell particles instead.

Also, could you post an ingredients list?

aqua ,sodiun laureth sulphate, cocamide DEA, glycerin, PEG -7, glyceryl, cocoate, panthenol, cocamidopropyl, betaine, bis-PEG/PGG20/20, dimethicone, sodiun methylparabe, citric acid, sodium chloride, tocopheryl acetate, dipropylene glycol, 2-bromo-2nitropropane-1,3-diol, anthemis nobilis , pelargonium graveolens, citronellol

i'm using clinique mild liquid at the mo and i like it but just wondering about this as i use the moisturiser and like it

Your cleanser looks fine, though if you tend to be sensitive to cleansers with fragrance you may want to avoid it.

Hey Snow Queen I have some questions about products. Particularly the Fruit of the Earth vitamin E daily face cleanser, firming facial mask, Almond scrub, and daily defense moisturizer. I cant find the ingredients to these products, but seeing as you are somewhat of an expert maybe you know where to look. By the way it is amazing how much you know and your only my age, are you planning to be a dermatologist or something?

Thanks

I do apologize that I can't tell you much about the products you're interested in without ingredients lists. You may wish to e-mail the customer service department to find out if they can send you some for the products you're interested in.

I can tell you that the almond scrub would likely be too irritating for regular use because I'm guessing that the particles are jagged and overly abrasive to the skin.

Thanks for your compliment; I thought about becoming a dermatologist but decided that I would rather be an esthetician. I am currently taking classes at an esthetician's school.

Hey thanks for the info Snow Queen. I have a follow up question, do you think that the almond scrub could be used just once a week and not be too harsh. Because I don't think that I need to exfoliate too often because when I shave (with and electric razor) I can see little bits of white (dead skin cells?) when I clean it out. Also I have done the Dip thing with mediocre results for like a month and a half, and was wondering how long I should give these products to work? I am thinking about two months. Also in regards to the mask, should that only be used once a week. Thanks again, and good luck in becoming an esthetician.

If you're looking for a gentle, manual exfoliant, get one with smooth bead-like particles as opposed to jagged particles. I doubt Dove's would be too harsh for daily use, but if it is I suppose you could see how your skin does with using it once every other day instead.

Have you ever used a salicylic acid product before, and if so, which one(s)?

oops, sorry didn't notice your last sentence until now!

no, i have never used salicylic acid product before.

i'm really scared of using any acne-related acid after the horrible allergic reaction to BP.

i just bought aveeno skin brightening daily scrub. do you know about it?

can it be used as cleanser also?

thanks! and happy new year :)

I recommend you do a patch test with one of the salicylic acid products mentioned in Part II of this thread; at least then you'll know for sure whether or not you're allergic to salicylic acid. Definately don't use it all over your face until you know, though, and you may want to buy from a seller to whom you can return the opened product.

The Skin Brightening Daily Scrub is a good scrub product; I would not use it as a cleanser. Use a cleanser first to clean your skin and then follow with the scrub.

hey snow queen,

thanks for the reply!

i went to the store to buy nivea scrub for men. i put some in my hand and immediately felt "tingling" feeling. since you mentioned that could indicate irritating to the skin, i decided not to buy that.

someone has told me that using 100% cotton face cloth can act as a gentle exfoliant. i'm thinking of trying this because if it really works, i'd rather use a simple cloth than more beauty product.

thanks!

i really want to post the list of ingredients. the problem is that it's a product from Japan and it's all written in Japanese. i have no idea how to translate these chemical names into English  the only thing i know for sure is that it contains glycerin and that it gives a "warm" feeling when i put it on the face (i tried once already)

Shaving exfoliates the skin as it cuts the hair, so you shouldn't use exfoliants within twelve to twenty-four hours of shaving. I honestly think that the almond scrub is probably not a good idea to use it all; there are much better scrubs using round, bead-like particles like Aveeno's Skin Brightening Daily Scrub.

I recommend using masks once or twice a week, though I know some people with very oily skin use them more often.

If you think you experience unusual irritation from a product like the tingling you mentioned, don't use it.

A washcloth can be a great anual exfoliant; just make sure that you use a clean washcloth each time and use high heat when drying them in the dryer to kill bacteria.

If it produces a warming sensation, I'm concerned that it's irritating.

Hi Snow Queen. Im new to this site and you seem to really know your stuff, so i had a quick question for you. I am currently using a cleanser and i wanted to know if you think it is safe to use for acne prone skin.

This is the link for the one i am currently using...

http://www.dermstore.com/product_Effaclar+...+Cream_7956.htm

If you think that is safe and good to use, awesome, but in case you dont, do you think this one would be better, same company, just different cleanser...

http://www.dermstore.com/product_Toleriane...eanser_1499.htm

I read in one of your posts that cream cleansers can clog pores and that scared me considering i have acne, but the gel cleanser form of the first link i gave you, same product except gel, really dries me out....the cream cleanser doesnt, but i dont know if maybe its clogging my poers at the same time. Thank you very much and i hope you stay around for awhile, your a big help to a lot of people. thanks again

hi snow queen!

okay, i changed my mind about exfoliant....again. i decided to try one of the salicylic acid products you suggested Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion. i'm going to test patch it first and see if i get any excessive irritation from it. do you think it's likely that i'm allergic to it considering the fact that i'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide?

also, if i were to use the neutrogena lotion, do i apply toner before and moiturizer after?

UPDATE:

so i went to the store to buy the neurtrogena rapid clear acne defense face lotion....but i couldn't find it :( at any of the stores i went. maybe they don't sell it in Canada :doubt: i also looked for the olay total effect anti-aging anti-blemish moisturizer, couldn't find that either.

however, i saw neutrogena rapid clear acne eliminating spot gel and rapid clear daily treatment pads. is either of those also a good salicylic acid product? or maybe another product from Olay?

Unfortunately both cleansers you post use myristic acid as the surfectant, which may be too drying. Glycerin is listed as the second ingredient, which would help prevent dryness, but it's better to use a cleanser that for sure won't cause unnecessary irritation. The Clinique cleanser I'm using now is good.

It's hard to say whether or not your skin is sensitive to both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. My guess is no, but that doesn't mean you won't have a bad reaction; it's just my guess.

You apply toner before the exfoliant and moisturizer (if you need it) after the exfoliant. You don't need toner, though.

Unfortunately Neutrogena's Rapid Clear Gel contains a lot of alcohol, which would not be good for anyone's skin, especially yours since you seem to be more sensitive than other people. Olay doesn't make any other effective leave-on salicylic acid products that I'm aware of. Bare Escentuals makes a salicylic acid product called Skin Rever-Upper which, if the information the company sent me was true, has a pH of around 3.8, making it effective for exfoliation. You could also order one of the recommended products online.

Ok so I got the purpose cleanser and it works GREAT! Not overdrying at all and it feels awesome. However, I can't seem to find the Dove's Sensitive Skin Lotion. I tried cvs and walgreens so but no luck. I will probably try out so other stores to look, where did you get yours?

What do you think of Complex 15? Or would you recommend another one? I might use it if I can't find the dove one for a night time moisterizer. For the Complex moisterizer there are 2 versions.

Does it matter which one I get?

i used to use witch hazel toner, but i just boughtone that you've recommended on the first page, the biotherm biosensitive soothing refreshing spring mist.

also, do you ever find your face to become dry throughout the day since your regimen doesn't include use of moisturizer in the morning?

another also, do you reapply your sunscreen during the daytime?

Both moisturizers look pretty basic; not great, but not bad. They do contain waxy thickeners which can clog pores, but just because something can clog pores doesn't mean it will for you personally. Both moisturizers shouldn't irritate your skin. I would think that the lotion would be less likely to clog pores, but they both look similar.

I do use moisturizer under my sunscreen whenever my face is dry, but since it's not a regular part of my regimen I didn't specifically list it as such.

I do reapply my sunscreen during the day.

My apologies, but I can't tell you whether or not your products are potentially beneficial without seeing complete ingredients lists, and I couldn't find any on the site (though I could have overlooked them by mistake).

A lot of people with oily skin like Purpose's liquid cleanser.
