my son has had quite a battle with acne and it is finally getting under control after discovering celiac disease and other gut issues. Unfortunately, due to the damage to his GI track accutane is off the table. He has been using dapsone and benzoyl peroxide wash as well as healing his gut issues by fully removing gluten and using a PPI to heal gastritis / duodenitis and the acne seems to have stopped or greatly minimized. He is, however, left with severe scarring. Currently dealing with a lot of PIE - I believe?
I am stressing to him the importance of sunscreen which he is not currently using so we can help fade this redness which is making everything look way worse. Once that the acne is under control (currently seeing a derm that specializes in autoimmune issues and who is working with him) what can we do about this scarring? Is there hope to improve it some? What kind of scars are these? He has some scarring in his forehead too that with time has lessened considerably as the redness has faded.
Thank you so much!
Hey, it's best to see a dermatologist. Microneedling or laser treatments can improve redness and minimize scarring. The sooner, the better. If there are concerns about Accutane, there's still Adapalene available as a cream or gel. It's gentler and has minimal internal side effects because it's applied topically.
But be sure to discuss everything with one or more doctors.
Without the redness, his skin will look much better.
Thank you. Yes. I agree. I think if he can deal with the redness it will look a LOT better. There are some pretty deep indents but other areas seem more shallow. We will be discussing with his derm and probably consulting others. Oh, he is supposed to do altreno - which is a gentler tretinoin but is too busy with school so he said he will start that this summer, hopefully that helps and doesn't cause a crazy purge. Acne is a nightmare as we all know here.
