Hello all,

I have been a lurker here recently. I have acne scars that are around 15 years old.(I believe I have all kinds of scars) I got over the mental agony of it some years back but have been wanting to do something about them recently. Do you have suggestions on the best dermatologists for acne scar in NJ/NYC area?

I have the following shortlisted but it is hard to understand their track record especially on Indian skin ( I am Indian).

Can someone recommend the best that is out there in NJ/NYC?

Dr. Julia Tzu( Seems to be a subcision specialist from what I see)

Dr Nelson Novick

Dr Michelle Greene

Dr. Khrom

Dr. Alizadeh

Dr. Orentreich

I would suggest traveling to San Diego and visit dr rullan in and out the same day. He uses phenol and erbium to blunt the edges of scars. Highly effecting for blunting both icepick and boxcars. If scar revision is just starting out expect to t some sessions.

Julia Tzu looks a bit interesting solely because of her alleged before/after subcisions and location. But I'm always hesitant when it comes to "dermatologists" doing surgical procedures. Seems like she does do them but more times than not having a derm do a surgical procedure lacks experience or expertise. Tzu might be an exception idk.

Other doctors in that area are hard to find good ones tbh. I suggest just doing vast amounts of searching but I don't know of any that stand out in the area. David Lim's site recommends some doctor in NY but I read the reviews and it isn't great I forget his name.

Thanks mate! It is a shame there aren't many good ones even in NYC. I read in forums about her and the poster wasn't pleased with the outcomes. Makes me wonder if acne scar revision is the only branch among medical procedures where the Doctor has no idea of what the outcome is going to be like. Most of these procedures look like cash grabs to me

Thank you ! I am not sure phenol goes well with Indian skin. It is risky from what I have heard. I haven't really thought of going out of state yet but thank you for the suggestion ! I know of a guy in this forum who had a miraculous outcome with Dr.Rullan.

Roy Geronemus I think. He is a laser specialist from what I hear.

Roy G yes that's the one. His reviews have some good and bad ones and the price seems insane like $500 to meet someone for 5 min and might not be him etc. NJ/NY requires a lot of due diligence and searching. There's talent here for sure but nothing that stands out as "expert" or one size fits all. Requires the person searching to demand testing/slowly, ask for expertise, and due lots of searching and use common sense. Anyone who suggests a peel or needling will cure acne scarring is probably not an expert.

Agreed. Apparently, there are some derms out there saying lasers are going to work for pitted scars. The lack of ethics is disappointing . Nothing has changed in the past 7 years from what I can see( I used to be obsessed with the scars around 7 years back and then I sort of snapped out of the obsession. It doesn't look like not a lot of advancements in the field of acne scar revision has happened in those 7 years)

Thank you! Khrom seems to be having mixed reviews and she does the Taylor liberator subcision which I think is pretty intense. I am not sure I am ready for it
