I flew back literally an hour after my procedure. I wore a hoodie and double mask 99% of the time during the airport and plane.

Whelp guys, I am almost 100% sure all my acne scars are now hyperpigmented as a result of this treatment. I've been in denial that it was bruising but the discoloration is no longer going away each morning. I think it was a result of the phenol cross but I dont know. I did not suction aggressively so I don't believe it was that. My happiness about my scars pretreatment would probably be around a 6/10, now I would say it is around 4/10.

Life is such a bitch isn't it...

Im not too worried though ... i am pretty sure the HP will go away over the next couple of weeks... just be patient would be my two cents.

really? what do you mean? do you mean the ones where he crossed are reddish after the scabs have fallen?

I don't think I had "hyperpigmentation" from the cross...they were a little pinkish after the scabs fell but then went back to normal within a day or so.

have you contacted the office?

@UptownOryxI wouldnt worry about it, I was hyperpigmentated as well and I freaked out but your face is healing and it can be slow, it took about 4 weeks post procedure for the blotchiness abs redness to go away, remember to use retin A at night and also per beautiful ambition recommendation I am using a kojac licorice cream at night as well to help with the discoloration.

@tryinghard123if you live in Australia you should consider dr David Lim instead of traveling all the way to California.

For me, the hyperpigmentation was very minimal/minor, even though I'm tan and usually get darker in the sun very easily.I also did not do any suctioning.

The areas where Dr Rullan did Phenol CROSS was very pink for awhile and the color gradually returned to normal, but never got unusually dark.

Prior to the procedure, I did havemajor concerns about hyperpigmentation, so I added hydroquinone to my skin care regimen as a preventative measure. Ihad also already been using Tretinoin/Adapalene, Niacinamide, and Azelaic Acid, and Vitamin C. The hydroquinone got too irritating on my skin, so I had to stop.

Currently, the main topicals I'm using areTretinoin 0.05%, Niacinamide 5%, Azelaic Acid 4%. Overall, this seems to be helping to even out my skin tone. I have another session with Dr Rullan in a couple of weeks, so hopefully this regimen will prevent pigmentation issues.

Hey guys thank you for all the replies. At this point I am sure my hyperpigmentation is here to stay for at least 6-12 months. I can tell at the rate they are fading that it is going away at the same rate as the PIH I've had in the past and that's how long it usually takes. I have been extremely bitter the past few days but I guess I have to take this as a "it is what it is" sort of thing since these things happen sometimes. If I look past the PIH, I can say now that I have around ~20% overall improvement to my scars themselves.

I think it's possible a lot of this could have been avoided using all of the topicals that have already been mentioned in this thread. I've been doing research on whitening creams with Niacinamide, Vit C, kojic acid, licorice and all that jazz that previous posters have mentioned and they definitely have concrete science behind them. I will be using them over the next few months and update this thread... hopefully the topicals can make the PIH go away in 3-6 months. Also, I think I will still go to Rullan for a second subcision around 6 months from now and be the Guinea pig to see if the topicals prevent PIH the second time around.

EDIT:

Lessons learned from this for my next treatment:

1. Subcision + a HA filler (in case the increased inflammation from suctioning exacerbated the PIH)

2. No phenol cross

3. Have a topical anti-PIH routine going on before scheduling my next subcision or any scar treatment for that matter
