@meilinboss thanks for sharing your experience! When I first got the Juvederm fillers in July, I did notice some lumpiness, which I massaged and they went down over time. Perhaps, the initial technique was not as good as it could have been, and maybe I was overfilled initially.

I was surprised that 6 months later, I had a reaction, which everything seemed to be okay for a bit. I found a research article here that describes some other cases of late-onset inflammation to fillers: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5889432/

And it most of those cases, the Prednisone helped to resolve the issues.

I just had sculptra 8 days ago and I got a bad cough and headache three days later. I am wondering if they are related too. Could be a coincidence. I am still recovering from it but feel much better. 

@joeyskglad to hear you are recovering! In my case I think my badcold triggered the inflammation around the juvederm injection areas.

Update:

I took a course of Prednisone for about aweek which helped the inflammationgreatly. However after I got off it, the lumps and swellingcame back This past weekend. Hugebummer and very concerning. Today, I went to a local dermatologist who took a look. Shetold me thatthis type of late-onset inflammation can happen as part of infections such as a cold, which I have been battling for two weeks.

I was prescribed a longer course Prednisone for 12 days, in addition to antibiotics for a month. She Also wanted to shootdiluted cortisonedirectly into the inflammation but I was too concerned about the risk of pitting / indentation. The risk is a extremely low, butI held off on that for now.

Im hopingthat in a couple of weeks this will all be gone for good.

It sucksthat I had this reaction to Juvederm, especially six months later,but the derm said there are other fillers that I can try in the future. She did strongly warn me against Belafill as the risk of granulomas is much greater with it

Sorry to but in but after Juvederm fillers and some time (~2-3 months) are you planning to get Infini again? Also was subcision done first before fillers? I'm potentially looking at fillers in the future. I just got back from my first subcision and am still on week 2 of 14 before my next Infini treatment.

Hello! I did juvederm in a separate session after I had done a fewsubcisions. I will likely avoid juvederm in the future given my allergy to it, but am considering other fillers.

This year, I am mainly doing Cross. But am considering doing Genius towards the end of the year, or next year.

what fillers are you considering? HA or more long-lasting?

Only HA fillers, like Restylane. I had considered Bellafill, but given my reaction to Juvederm, and I wont be considering any permanent fillers as the risk is too high for me.

I think it's wise to go with temporary fillers that you can top off. It's a hassle, but maintaining once or twice a year is a lot easier to manage then dealing with chronic inflammatory response to a permanent filler that can't be removed. These swellings may indicate a sensitivity and propensity to get inflammation.

This type of reaction is pretty common when your body is fighting an infection elsewhere in the body and your immune system goes into overdrive and seeks out anything it deems foreign. I have flare ups like this every few months if I get sick or if I manipulate the area excessively.

Actually, its funny I read your post today because I woke up with a lump on my left cheek where I've had fillers injected many times. Sometimes antihistamines seem to work, other times you just have to wait it out unless you take something like prednisone.

You can get reactions like this to any filler, but Juvederm does tend to draw a lot of water into it.

Which antibiotic did she put you on? I'd be curious to know since I have flare ups too.

@dazzedI got put on doxycycline for the antibiotics, and for this second course of prednisone it's a 10-day course. It's helped a lot so far, and the terrible cold I've had for the past couple of weeks has reached its tail end. I'm hoping that once I get off the meds, that the swelling doesn't return too much.

I definitely plan to continue with temporary fillers. I've started doing botox recently, so I figure I can just top off at the same time.

And for what its worth, I dont think your scars look very noticeable!

@superburrito Thanks for the info. As I write this, the pretty big lump of inflamed filler on my left cheek has mostly flattened out. I seem to get these things every couple of months and I may have to do a course of antibiotics to see if it decreases these episodes.

Late-onset inflammation to Juvederm fillers from July 2019
If you've been following some of my recent posts, I've been suffering from late-onset reaction to the Juvederm fillers from fillers that were injected in July 2019. The reaction appeared when I had a bad cold in January, and has been very stubborn even after two courses of Prednison. In my last update, I was put on10-day course of Prednisone. Unfortunately, after I got off it, the nodules came back. :-(. My local derm in San Francisco ended up injecting steroids directly into the inflammation. She also put me on another course of Prednisone, this time for 20-days. Those 20 days really sucked, as it was a lot of pills, and had to be timed with food. I finished the course a few days ago, and so far, the nodules have virtually disappeared and there has been no reoccurrence except for an area on my right cheek which is starting to form alump again, it's not visually noticeable, but I can feel it with my fingers.

Treatment with Dr Rullan for acne scarring, Feb 26, 2020
Today, I had another treatment with Dr Rullan: Cross and PRFscalp injections. These were pretty much the same routine as prior treatments as I have been getting. The one thing I did do was to make sure to point out the specific scars I had concerns about to make sure the Phenol acid was applied. I also had him look at the lump that was forming on my right cheek and he injected some saline to help break up nodule. We'll see how it goes over the next few days.

Still trying to find some time to take some pics, but my life has been a bit crazy lately. Thanks for your patience.

I am really sorry. I hope this issue resolves quickly. So, the fillers got inflammed with no active acne, just after a cold? Does this happen often? Do you suffer from an autoimmune condition if I may ask? I am also interested in fillers with Dr Emil.

@MihaelaP, I do not have any autoimmune diseases, as far as I know. My local dermatologist told me that reactions to fillers can happen with systemic illness such as a cold/flu. From reading medical research papers, I see that other doctors also have observedthis.

Overall, HA fillers are considered safe and can be easily dissolved if there are issues. I would highly recommend going with someone that specialize infillers. Dr Emil, from what I can tell, is an expert at treating scars, so theres a high chance you wont have complications. Just dont do any permanent fillers like Bellafill.

Hi, I'm considering my first ever acne scar treatment with Dr. Rullan sometime in the summer. I will be flying in out of state and am wondering how much time I should leave before my return flight (i.e. is there a follow-up appointment after his trio treatment with subcision, phenol cross and microneedling?).

@OrangeTreeHey! There is no follow-up appointment, however you will be extremely swollen right after the trio, so I recommend staying in San Diego for at least one day for the swelling to come down. You may also have some redness as well. The scabs from the CROSS will last about a week, I've gotten used to go through the airport with the scabs, and it's not a big deal.

Is there any reason why you stopped doing subcision and microneedling? I hate that redness persist for at least 3-4 weeks whenever I do phenol cross.

Having never had any treatments, I'm a little concerned when it comes to picking a physician in case they do not evaluate or treat my scars appropriately (or are limited by the toys they have on hand).

Is Dr. Rullan office still open with the virus going around?

Hi Burito. I am experiecning the same late on set inflammation like you, I dont have nodules however, my cheeks swell upp instead (diffuse swelling) I had alot of filler for scars in both my cheeks. Im just wondering if your problem resolved? Did you also notice diffuse swelling of your face?

Hey! Yes the PRF is for hair loss, I'm not sure if it's actually helped, but I may not be doing it spaced close enough.

Hi! Why did you end up switching from Dr. Weiner to Dr. Rullan? I am interested in seeing one or both of those providers so I'd love to hear your perspective / reasoning.
