Can You Recommend A Doctor?

Of the ones you listed, I think Dr Mark Taylor has the most specialization in acne scarring. Also, some of his patients have posted online and showed tremendous results. The one caveat is that there is no long term updates from those people who posted on Realself. It seems like he takes a very aggressive approach. Rapaport is very expensive, and I have spoken to people who were not impressed with his skills. Plus, I have not seen any impressive before and afters online for him. Dr. Jason Emer seems to promote himself quite aggressively online, and I find some of his reviews suspect. That's not to say that he isn't a good doctor, but he is young and doesn't have as much of a track record. He does seem to promote his specialization in treating acne scars though.

Based on what I've seen online, I think Rappaport is overrated.

Re: Dr. Emer. I suppose some of the good reviews could be fake but I personally think they're a true testament to his character and skill. His compassion and committment to doing the best job possible were really apparent even in his emails. Plus, he sent me a few before and after pics of his work on acne scarring (which I can't find right now) and they were very impressive.

Whatever you do, I'd stay away from Dr. Philip Young (in Washington, I think). I've read some horrible stuff about his work and after care.

Yeah I saw his bad reviews too! I didnt even put him on the list for that reason. I will email Dr Emer. Haven't heard back from rapport but I will keep that in mind! Thanks!

Yeah I was confused too that his specialty is acne scars and he has no good photos! And on real self he tells people to make sure you can view a doctors before and afters! All of his look many many years old with crap cameras!

take the hint he must achieve rubbish results

Oh, just remembered. Send a note to Dr Jason Emer. He's in Beverly Hills now. Used to be in San Fran. He might be a derm surgeon (vs PS) But experienced nonetheless. I exchanged emails with him a few times. Real nice guy...seemed to really care. His reco (punch excision) is what I'm doing right now, though not with him (not in my area). He gets great reviews.

Do you still have his email address? Did you do a consult with him because when I called they told me he charges $150 for a skype consult!

When I chatted with him, he was still in San Fran. He had responded to one of my posts on RealSelf. I needed some follow up advice so I just sent him an email through RealSelf and we started chatting after that. Too bad about the $150 consult fee. I've spent a TON of money on consults. And the best advice I got was actually free .

What about Steven Weber in Denver?

Side note, I didn't know you can email questions to doctors personally on realself! I guess I missed the button..where is that? Been wanting to do that for a while now. Though I guess it's not guaranteed the doctor will answer, may sometimes be staff responding on behalf of doctor?

He is a possibility! Was also looking at Dr. Ort I think he is in Denver too. But I recently found out that a dermatologist near me does TCA cross and subcision too. He owns 3 laser dermatology clinics and is not a surgeon. The subcison and cross technique is not mentioned on his website but when I called and asked about it the lady said yes he does those too. I will do a consult with him soon but I wonder if I should trust a local guy or fly to an expert? I'm sure he will want to push me to laser but I will refuse until after some lifting techniques!

Ah ok, thanks for letting me know, freshstart. That's a bummer. It was cool that he responded to my Facebook message though. I mean why would he turn down questions...best way to get a potential patient. Still, I thought he would just say call the office to consult.

Hey Ang,

I had a consult with Dr. Emer But it sounds like you may have found someone closer to home which I think is great. Just wanted to say, my consult came to $100...don't forget to look on doctors profiles on realself, some say they waive the fee or discount if you mention realself. I still feel $100 was too much for this doctor..so many reputable doctors have given me good consults for free. Still, I was determined to find an "expert"...but high fees don't necessarily guarantee expertise or even that they are a good person of course. Anyway..if you do a real detailed search on realself...by state..then cities all around you...try to look at derms but also facial plastic surgeons, if you are considering excisions. I agree that lasers should probably come last, not first. I get so angry when a doctor immediately suggests a gentle laser...that way they get paid for multiple sessions, you get little to no results, and have to pay them to do something else to help. Not always but that's what it's felt like to me. There are so many good doctors though. I literally did like 10 consults...was able to because they were free. At least you learn a lot about what options are possible. Don't exhaust yourself..i mean I had time and wanted to research. ..but you may just find that the right doctor for you was right underneath your nose...close to home the whole time. I traveled all the way to San Francisco to consult with someone I thought would be the best...but doesn't always work out that way. Try to keep travels to a minimum so you dont get exhausted but if you do find someone amazing by all means please recommend to us, we could all use a legitimate recommendation. I'm sure you will find the right one or ones to help you. X

You are welcome! Great that you have a wonderful husband and best wishes on your impending motherhood :) This is weird...i actually did type out my my thoughts on the consult with him and saw it appear here but now it is gone. I will message you when I get a chance. It was a little bit helpful. Wasn't the worst consult I've been on for sure, but i didn't feel it warranted the consult fee. Kind of frustrated that I can't think of any other dermatologist in all of California because other well known ones seem to have very concerning reviews. For a number of reasons, I didn't really feel comfortable enough to choose him. But he may be good for somebody else!

I am going to see Dr. Nelson Novick in NYC on June 15th. He seems to have a ton of experience and doesn't really like lasers. For my raised scars he is going to do manual Dermabrasion to make them blend in more with the rest of my skin. I'm having the consult and treatment done the same day. I found this guy on realself.com and sent him a few pictures and emails and he wrote me back right away. I loved that at 8:30 at night he was answering all my questions.

Anyway here is his info if anybody is interested.

Hey Tracy, was just wondering..when you said you sent him emails..do you mean that you selected the get a consult button and he personally spoke to you from there? I just have never gotten a personal response when I inquire and only gotten the doctor's office to call me when I contact them on realself.

yeah that is how i contacted him. he got back to me very quickly it was really awesome. i also have his email too its [email protected]. if you are going to contact him i would have some nice clear pictures so that he can see what you have going on and then can better assist you on what he might want to do. i messaged them today again and said i wanted to make an appointment and the doctor was so nice and got back to me within minutes and had his assistant set something up for me and also told me pretty much how long it would take for the procedure.

Just my 2 cents guys but whoever you to go make sure you number 1 make sure they can show you before and after examples of there work on acne scarring if they give you some BS about there being some patient confidentiality its time to move on. For example i had a consult about re-cell i asked the doc at the end if there was any before and after pictures he gave me some excuse however his patient coordinator got in contact with me a few days later sent me the only 3 pics the had in the clinic and lets just say the results are very disappointing.

So true! Has anyone found someone with good before and afters? I feel like I live in the wrong country because Dr Lims website has awesome before and after pics! If only I could make a trip around the world a few times:) He is in Australia...

Ah ok, thanks tracy for the clarification. Hope, I think you are right on. That is what happened to me at doctor Emer's office. Ang...i have been fixated on photos of dr. Lim's work too! But he is so far away. When i read reviews on him, they were mixed. Also just found this. Looks like he has visited these forums: Who knows. I'm still looking.

excellent find snow flake but i still do find him to be a credible guy some of his before and after pics are good. i just want to get across to everyone that it so important to see before and after pictures never ever take a docters word as the saying goes a photo speaks a million words. i will try upload later on those 3 before and after pics to this website to give you guys a idea of what im talking about dont get me wrong recell has its place but it angers me when docters try and promote it as magic.

i'm not that worried about before and afters but then again my type of raised scarring is really unlike any other scarring i have seen out there. i go with how much experience they have as well as reviews and how much they know about scarring. the guy i am going to see seems to know more than any other doctor i have talked to and i love the fact that the isnt trying to say he can make it perfect but that he can make it a lot better. he isnt trying to sell me anything he genuinely cares about his patients so that means a lot to me.

i know one thing i wont be roped into doing laser ever again. it did nothing for my raised scarring.

thanks i am excited but also nervous. i've been trying to get my chin area fixed up for the last few years so its very frustrating. i am just thankful that i can wear foundation to help cover it up a bit. my appointment is on june 15th at 9:30 so it will be here before i know it. my hubby and i are driving in from pittsburgh on saturday so we can spend a little time in nyc before i get my treatment. i love nyc so much so it works out that this guy is located there. i am going to take some good pictures before i go so i can have some before and afters to share with everybody but its hard because the raised scars are more white so they dont show up as well in pictures as they should. for me though i think the loss of collagen in the chin area makes it look even worse than it is as well. i am going to ask about filler too when i am there on the right side of my chin. i think because i got so many cortisone shots there back in the day that its sunken in more than the other side.

Hope- I live in the Midwest USA. Not a lot of choices around me...I need TCA CRoss I am almost positive. The laser clinic I contacted near me said their doctor does TCA CRoss but that they really haven't seen good results with it. That makes me think that the doctor isn't skilled with the procedure and makes me leery of having him perform it. He actually is not a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon. Looks like he is board certified in family medicine and then got interested in laser and cosmetic procedures.

TCA CROSS needs multiple sessions and I have lots of ice pick scars and probably wouldn't want to do them all at one time so that means many trips! Can't imagine I will be able to go across the country that many times!

Good luck Tracy, glad you have an option to explore. Like you I'm just looking for improvement too. I was just wondering, what laser did you have that did not help? Was ablative or fractional? Co2? Fraxel? Was it for the raised scar or more indented type scars?

thank you!! i had 2 fraxel restores, 2 co2 laser treatments (100% ablative) and 1 microlaser peel with erbium yag laser at 40 microns with 2 passes as well as a few tca peels. i will say that the laser treatments helped a few newer indents i had but not my older ones. i have raised scarring that i am trying to correct now but i do have some indented scarring on my chin that i would like to be addressed at some point. its not really indented but enough to make it look weird more like the borders are well defined if that makes any sense. i can do a great job at covering most it up with makeup though thank god but when i wash my face i am like damn that looks terrible!
