Is saline permanent?

It is supposed to be.

According to my dermatologist whom I trust, saline injections are not permanent. I believe that only silicone injections are considered to be 'permanent'. I would encourage you to consider dermarolling and using a topical product containing esther C for collagen development.

Saline is basically just salt water. If all it took was a little salt water to permanently cure acne scars, then there would be no such things as Restylane or other injectable fillers that carry a much high price tag. DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE!!!!!

Hi GUYS! I did it. It was not so bad BUT there were a few things that I think anyone getting subcision with Dr. Rapaport should know: 1) block out a good three hours. Between waiting, numbing time, and Dr. R's crazy busy schedule, there is a lot of waiting around in the patient room. 2) get ready for SERIOUS pain with numbing. Dr. R comes in and marks with a red marker all the scars he will subcise. Then EACH scar is injected with numbing medication. This burns and is really awful, especially if you are having lots of scars done. THe procedure itself only took about 20 mins. Bandages were placed all around my face. Of note, I asked Dr. Rapaport about suction afterwards with a small handheld vac. He said he has read the study but thinks it will be difficult to emulate the results at home. I might try to do this. I am obviously too swollen now to know results. Once the bandages come off I will post some photos. OF NOTE: Dr. R mentioned that a new procedure called LeViv is going to be FDA approved soon. This is the stem cell procedure similar to the Recell. He said this will be a good alternative to lasers for superficial scarring. If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me-

Wow, why does he use so much anesthetic?

Did he mention more about LeViv? I googled it and found nothing.

Good luck in your recovery! If you have questions you should call his office (white bumps).

Hi Guys! Bandages came off last night. Very sore (feels like cystic acne under the skin) and have to sleep on back without face touching anything which makes sleeping difficult. I'm happy to report no lumps or bumps and seemingly perfect skin. I look like I did before I had acne. That being said, all the large pores, brown spots, and shallow pits are still there so the texture is not perfect, but the cheeks are smooth lines with no waves or rolling scars. Of course this is the swelling period and I am dreading seeing the improvement dissapear with the swelling but fingers crossed! Anyone have any insight as to how different the skin looks after sweeling? Is it a big dramatic drop in improvement or only slight?

Prettywords, all he said about Leviv is that it is stem cells grown from your own skin and that it will take care of textural irregularities such as what lasers do now but without the down time and risk of lasers.

Thanks.

The swelling, even knowing it's swelling making everything look so good, is tough, because I'm guessing people think and hope that in their case it's permanent -- I know I would hope that.

The difference in results after swelling varies from person to person.

I'm curious as to whether the swelling effect after a subcision or laser can be replicated with fillers.

It can if the scars are the right type.

I don't see how saline can be permanent. It would be reabsorbed.

The saline itself is not permanent, but causes collagen growth in the site in which it is injected. The collagen is permanent.

I was just thinking the same thing JMAC. It would make sense. Depending on what my final results are, I will definitely look into fillers.

DAY THREE

A lot of the swelling died down today and the pits are returning, but nowhere near as bad. I'd say at this point there is 50-60% improvement (there are about 90-95% improvement with the swelling). If there is any more sinkage, the improvement will be marginal. However, I was told not to expect any improvement for 4-6 weeks. Still, it is very difficult seeing the waves and pits return. oh well.

This is the website for Laviv, which is in Trial-2 phase for acne scarring:

Saucer scars that aren't bound down. Basically the same scars that they do subcision on.

Swelling will be prevalent for quite a while and longer than a week. You might think like I did that your scars have sunk deeper compared to before subcision but that'll most likely be perception because you'll be accustomed to weeks of massive swelling and perceived improvement. Subcision results are said to come about months down the track. Do not expect noticeable differences once the swelling subsides.

hi Guys, it is now day 4 and most of the swelling it gone. There is slight yellowish (and I mean slight) bruising over some of the deeper scars. I can notice microswelling in these areas as well. Overall, there is still a lot of great improvement.

Once thing I would like to add about this thread: Please do NOT post negative comments, such as that after "massive" swelling my scars will return to what they were before the procedure, or any improvement is just swelling, or that subcision made your scars worse. Please understand that we ALL HAVE different types of skin and scars. I am not Caucasian, my skin creates thick keloids, and this will impact the results of my procedure. If you have a negative experience or if all of your scars "came back" after a procedure, please feel free to create your OWN thread, but do not post those comments here. There is no reason to create negative energy for those of us who are paying good money and investing our time and energy into improving our skin. Obviously it has only been 4 days and NOBODY knows what the results of this procedure will be. I created this thread to document MY experience. If I continue to get negative-wishers, I will stop posting and then you will all wonder why "nobody talks about their results". Maybe this is why.

To all of you who have been supportive and informative, I greatly appreciate it!

DAIN, I urge you to speak with a dermatologist in acne scarring. The people on this forum are not doctors and they have not seen your skin. From what I have learned, fillers and subcision can improve scars that are bound down. Good luck!

I have already asked dermatologists and plastic surgeons, been operated by 3 different ones and yet no much result :/

I'm now waiting for an appointment with a famous plastic surgeon, hoping he can fill my scars, or at least one of them. fml

Naturalgirl, I am sure you will see great results from the subcision. Dr. R. is a very experienced and good doctor.

When he mentioned LaViv, did he tell you when he will be able to offer LaViv?

He did not tell me the cost of the treatment nor did I ask. As they "grow" your stem cells first I am sure it is an expensive treatment.

BTW guys, stem cell treatments are already available. Rapapport was just talking about his partner's treatment Leviv which is awaiting fda approval. You can probably price out the other treatments already available to get an idea of what leviv will cost.

According to a presentation I found from Fibrocell $2,000 for the whole treatment.

Bound down scars are a good candidate for subcision and filler (later when they have been subcised and are no longer bound down).

No -- bound down scars should be subcised first or undermined and then they are good for fillers. If they are bound down and then you get fillers you run the risk of the 'donut effect.'

Bound down scars are PERFECT for subcision. That's what subcision essentially does, it breaks the tethers of the scar that are binding it down raising the scar up to the skin level.

Non bound down scars that are saucers are good for fillers w/o subcision, but undermining before the procedure is a good idea anyway.

DAY 6 UPDATE- Woke up this morning with some serious puffage. I look at my subcision in terms of puffage (the scars have puffed up and are not as indented) and sinkage (they are sinking back down to their pre-subcision levels). There was major improvement noticed this morning. Hoping this is not same crazy fluke! Most of the bruising is gone and there is a slight yellow tinge in some areas that can onyl be seen on my i-phone pics and not in the mirror when I look.
