ok, time for some humor
I went out, FINALLY to a restaurant, first since having this procedure done. I went to Semolina's out in Metairie (very yummy, yall should try it - they have several around the area). They have wonderful pasta creations there. ANYWAY, the waitress was like "wowwwwwww you're sweaty" (that was the first thing out of her mouth). This was of course the vaseline oil slick on my face. Of course while I'd love to say I can sweat, accutane actually killed any chance of that for me years ago and I no longer sweat, even if I run a marathon. I just smiled and said, no, its just aloe vera gel that I had to apply to the sunburn I received. Then she looked even more puzzled. "SUNBURN????" she asked, adding that New Orleans experienced a white Christmas yesterday. I said "oh, yes, I just returned from holiday vacation in the Carribean". LOL. She bought it! I then proceeded to drink like 4 waters (w/ lemon) You're body gets so thirsty after dermabrasion, at least mine has. I'm going through gallons of water. On the fourth re-fill she said "you poor thing, you're so thirsty from that sunburn". lol I HATE STUPID PEOPLE!!!!!!!!
Well you did tell her you got a sunburn and your face is pink/red so unless she has been studies plastic surgery...i really don't see how anyone would jump to the conclusion of 'he must of had his skin sanded off'
just my 2 cents
hi, i was just wondering.... for you guys who have had your dermabrasion with Dr Y, did he have to write out a prescription for any of you for medication prior to the dermabrasion?? because when i booked my appointment the woman on the phone asked me if i am prone to getting coldsore's (which i am not) and that was all she asked, but shouldnt there be some kind of medication i have to start taking a few days before my dermabrasion?
Thanks guys!
1 Week Update
Saw Dr. Y today. Also got to meet Shade from the board so that was cool (he's likely recovering at this point as his derma was scheduled for this afternoon - speedy get well wishes your way man)
Anyway, Dr. Y says I'm doing OK. I have a few stubborn areas that aren't healing up very well. For lack of better description, they are about 3/4 the way healed up but have stalled. He told me to call him in a week if they aren't caught up with the surrounding skin as he would put me on some type of prescription tape to wear nightly for 5 days. The tape causes the skin to thin (not good) so he wants to wait to make sure I need it. He said it prolly wouldn't be needed but we will monitor it closely. The areas resemble a burn. They are still very red and just slightly raised.
I think my swelling is completely gone. That said, as expected, some of my scars have re-emerged. There is still significant improvement but the skin is not as tight as it was just a couple days ago. The scars that have re-emerged are all shallower and are the same color as surrounding surface skin. The 21 punch floats remain undetectable except for 3 which can be made out if you look closely enough. The punch floated areas have responded the best.
I look like I have had a severe sunburn. It still feels like I have too (just light discomfort - burning sensation) Still sensitive to the touch but improving steadily.
Skin quality is still vastly improved. However, I'm starting to break out. It's not skin fragments working the way to the surface as I had first imagined either. Dr. Y confirmed that they were pimples and even excised them for me today (I had 3 that surfaced). I can't help but feel/see that there will be many more. How evil the vaseline is. Dr. Y attributed the pimples to the vaseline. He also said they were no big deal. He used some kind of instrument to excise them gently.
Question about Eucerin for you guys that are at or past that stage...
Today is the first day I stop the vaseline application and start the Eucerin cream. It seems very heavy and thick. It doesn't work into the skin (is that normal?). It also makes it shiny and nasty looking. Cassandra told me to start with the cream then work myself onto the lotion. I'm worried that the Eucerin is still too heavy and may continue to cause pimples/irritation. (it does say it won't clog pores but it still feels too heavy). What did you guys do when you switched over to Eucerin did you go cream then lotion? What was the timing? Or did you just go straight to the lotion.
When did you start applying a sunscreen? and/or makeup?
I would love to hear how Leo's, Poe's, Kiki's, Misty's, LizLee's, Drewboy's, Leafsfan's, Craig's, Morris' schedules as to how the transitions played out for each of you in regard to switching over to Eucerin and applying sunscreen and/or dermablend makeup.

Hey Lizlee,
Thanks for the reply. Are you using the lotion or the cream? Cassandra told me to start with the cream and then move onto the lotion. Which did you start with?
I'm SO shiny now. I hate how shiny I look... very shiny and red.
And I'm itching like mad!!!
Dr. Y told me the few little pimples I had today were from the vaseline which I stopped (hopefully it stops but I just have this ill feeling that my acne battles have just begun) At least until things even out. I still haven't healed up all the way either.
My skin feels TIGHT and firm to the touch. Does this mean I still have swelling? God I hope not. Could there be internal swelling that doesnt appear externally? (I mean that my facial features appear to be normal - back to my pre-derma condition). My skin is also pretty hot to the touch (temp wise).
they prescribe three medicine,I don't tell like gettng up and reading the labels but I know what they do ...
1) medrol dosepak - this is used starting the day of the procedure to combat swelling, you take 6 on day 1, 5 on day 2, 4 on day 3, etc until you get done on day 6
2) zovorax - used to combat cold stores, begin taking 3 daily starting 2 days before procedure
3) sleeping pill, take one nightly at bedtime
cheers guys, its just strange that the receptionist didnt tell me about these other meds that i have to start taking, she wasn't very friendly either, hmmm.... oh well i'll give them a call sometime soon, because my consultation is on the same day as the procedure so i'll probably need to get the prescritions sent to me over here in scotland, although i dont know if my local chemist will accept foreign prescriptions. Damn what a bloody hassle!
MissShady,
The three he prescribe are:
ACYCLOVIR 400MG (GENERIC FOR ZOVIRAX) - 30 TABLETS - COMBATS/PREVENTS OUTBREAK OF COLD SORES - TAKE 1 TABLET BY MOUTH THREE TIMES A DAY STARTING 2 DAYS PRIOR TO SURGERY.
MEDROL 4MG DOESPAK - (NOT SUITABLE FOR GENERIC) - REDUCES SWELLING - 21 TABLETS - BEGIN TAKING MORNING OF SURGERY. INSTRUCTIONS ARE RIGHT ON THE DOES PACK (TAKE 2 BEFORE BREAKFAST, 1 AFTER LUNCH, ETC... ) YOU USE LESS AND LESS AS THE DAYS GO BY, AND ON DAY 6 IS YOUR LAST DOSE.
FLURAZEPAM 30MG - (GENERIC FOR DALMANE) - 10 TABLETS - TAKE 1 CAPSULE BY MOUTH IF NEEDED FOR SLEEP.
I DIDN'T USE THE SLEEPING PILLS AT ALL. DIDN'T NEED THEM.
ON THE THIRD DAY, FOR PAIN I REQUESTED A PAIN KILLER. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING HE NORMALLY PRESCRIBES AS ITS PROBABLY NOT USUALLY NEEDED BY PEOPLE. HE GAVE ME HYDROCODENE/APAP (GENERIC FOR VICADIN) WHICH IS TO BE TAKEN ONCE EVERY 4 HOURS AS NEEDED FOR PAIN. I ONLY USED 4 OF THESE. I ATTRIBUTE THE PAIN/DISCOMFORT I WAS EXPERIENCING TO ABNORMALLY HIGH SWELLING THAT I EXPERIENCED FAIRLY LATE IN THE PROCESS. I THINK AT THAT POINT MY SWELLING SHOULD HAVE STARTED SUBSIDING BUT INSTEAD WORSENED. THE PAIN I EXPERIENCED WAS SHARP SHOOTING PAINS, THROBBING, STINGING, HEADACHE, NECKACHE, EVEN MY TEETH WERE ACHING. I WAS REALLLLLLY SWOLLEN.
HOPE THAT HELPS!
Sup everyone.
I'm only about 40 hours post dermabrasion but had a couple questions for all the folks who've had the procedure.
Did you guys have a headache and slight fever after the dermabrasion? Also, when you mentioned the mask drips, did you mean it was saturated with this thick yellowish fluid? My mask has lots of thick yellow heavy drainage, but luckily I go in again for a third mask in a couple of hours so can't wait to do that.
Portlandboy, you weren't playing man, that was quite intense and I'm glad we met up and you had a chance to let me know the real deal Keep in touch via AIM after you stop visiting acne.org I'd like to see how the dermabrasion turned out months from now. I'll do the same and maybe we'll be meeting up again for a second dermabrasion, who knows lol.

portlandboy23 You're correct. Cream then lotion. I found both Eucerins too thick and switched to Cetaphil. Eucerins has mineral oil which I found too greasy. Itching will subside after week 3, although I still itch a bit now. I am at week 5. I am a lot less pink this week than the previous weeks. My forehead is almost back to normal colour because Dr. Y didn't go as deep since I had little scarring there. I am also having those wonderful cysts appearing underneath my jawline . Maybe it's attributed to not eating well and drinking well (the lack of) during the holidays. I also neglected sleep. I suggest you guys don't be a fool like me: I party too much. Today I will get back to isolation and taking care of me. Tonight, I promise to update my pics. Some aren't pretty because I break out more. BUT LUCKILY, I HAVEN'T SCARRED FROM THOSE ACNES. They just happily disappear after a few days except for a few annoying cysts underneath my jawline. These cysts surely are a test of my patience b/c I'm not touching them or putting any topical acne cream/gel on them. I moisturize them and hoping they will eventually go away. The biggest cyst is now going down in size, pain, and deformity to the face.
shade Yellow fluids dripping are normal. I didnt' have a headache or a slight fever. Just overall fatigue and boredom in my hotel room. There was post-operative pain but not to the degree portlandboy was describing:
Shooting pain: NO
Throbbing: YES
Stinging: YES
Headache: NO
Neckache: NO
Toothache: NO
Week 1: Bandages then Vaseline.Week 2: Eucerin for 1 day, then Cetaphil
Week 3: Back to work so I had to use sunscreen-moisturizer combo (Eucerin has a moisturizer with SPF 30, Neutragena has one with SPF 15), underneath my Jane Iredale makeup. I don't like using the makeup because I feel it irritates my skin (probably my imagination). Don't use the make-up if you're not meeting clients and business associates.
Week 4 & 5: same as week 3.
Week 6 (1/3/2005): Hoping I could go without make-up
Leafsfan Looking forward to seeing your updated pics. Tomorrow my bandage/mask comes off. Did you have 3 or 4 masks. Today I got my third one and Cassandra said this will be the last one since it comes off tomorrow. I can't wait to eat solid food again, I don't think I can stand the sight of soup any longer.
I have a lot of crust around my mouth, basically wherever the bandage is not covering the skin, and I'm hoping these areas heal as well as the covered areas. Since you are into week 5, do you feel like you can go outside without makeup on? I plan on staying indoors for atleast 4 weeks but eventually I have to return to school so going out is a must, and I don't want to put on make up, just the spf 15 lotion.
I wanted to ask you specifically if you are having pigmentation problems since you have asian skin. The doctor said these would come up around the beginning of week 4 and that he would prescribe trilauma cream for it, which would take an additional 3 weeks to heal. Let me know.
Good luck, thanks for your informative posts and great pictures. I play online poker too, what site you use??
portlandboy sup man you still here? I wish i was at your stage, i'm just looking forward to getting rid of this mask I don't think i can live like this any longer. dr.y and cassandra said I was healing exceptionally well, and that tomorrow i wont need another mask. i wanna thank you again for that shaving cream and vaseline, gonna save me a trip to the store keep in touch as well, take care
