Hellooo,
I finally got a chance to go to my new GP today. She was really nice and prescribed me Epiduo and Lymecycline and told me to come back 2 months later to see how it's working.
I want to keep a log to keep track of how everything goes, as logs seem quite helpful. I've already taken the Lymecycline and will start the Epiduo tonight. I'm gonna start off using it slowly, then build up to every night. I really hope these help, as she said the next step is probably to refer me to a dermatologist for roaccutane, which seems really scary.
So fingers crossed!
Hope everything works well for you. Just be careful with accutane it is a very powerful course of treatment. There's a lot of side effects associated with accutane that include depression, dry lips, liver problems. It should only be used as a last resort solution.
Thanks, I hope it works out too! I'm really scared of accutane, especially after reading up on some of the side effects. I really hope I don't have to go on it. Have you been through the accutane experience?

When I used Dan's BP and it did work but it was very drying to my face and I tried not to use a lot of it because of this reason. I found the first time I used it I needed to adjust to it so I applied a little until face my face started to become accustomed. I had to moisturize or else my face would be so dry so make sure you find a light moisturizer because you will need to apply it right after the BP

I'm glad that the BP works for you though! I use cetaphil moisturiser, but I find it a little too greasy so I just use a little bit. What do you use to moisturise?
Day 4
Nothing much to report really. I've been using the epiduo every other night and have noticed my skin's become a little dry. I have noticed more pimples coming up, but not sure if that's the work of epiduo. I've been taking the lymecycline on an empty stomach and thankfully haven't experienced any nausea...just a bit of a horrible aftertaste. Uni starts in 5 weeks exactly and I hope my skin's improved by then! It's such a blow to your confidence when almost everyone around you has perfect skin but I'm trying to keep myself motivated and patient, even though I'm an extremely impatient person.
I forgot to give a brief history of my acne in the first post so here it is: it all started when I was 11/12, and has always been on my chin and jawline. I occasionally got a pimple on my forehead, temples and cheeks. I think it's always been moderate, but it especially flared up when I started uni last year. My GP describes it as moderate bordering on severe. I have pale skin and my acne is inflamed so that's a horrible combo. I have so many red marks from previous pimples that makes my acne look way worse than it is. I used Duac for 2 months, but it had no effect and I tried out Differin for 2 months as well; it helped with the inflammation but I still had my normal breakouts. I'm hoping the topical and antibiotics make a good combo for my skin!
I'll probably be adding some pictures in the upcoming weeks.
Day 8
I haven't had as many pimples popping up and the ones that do are thankfully small and dry up really quickly (thanks to epiduo I'm guessing). I'm still using the epiduo every other night, but I'm going to start building it up to every night soon...I hope that doesn't cause a breakout! Right now I'm left with about 2/3 small spots on my jawline and another on the side of my cheek. I'm still left with a crapload of red marks though and my skin's slightly flaky and dry even though I moisturise daily. I haven't experienced any burning from the epiduo, just some slight tingling. I hope my skin continues to improve from here, though I'm really scared I'll be getting an initial breakout from the epiduo next week if I haven't had one already. I'm still managing to take the lymecycline on an empty stomach without feeling sick so far which I'm glad about and I wait about an hour to have breakfast too. I haven't been consuming dairy products (rarely I do at times but in teeny amounts) for a few weeks and have replaced my usual milk with almond milk.
I'll probably be updating next Friday, which will be the 2 week mark
Day 9
I finally decided to get out of the house today to see a friend and as I'm putting on my makeup, I see 2 red bumps along my jawline I really hope they don't develop into full-blown pimples...hopefully the epiduo I zap on them tonight will stop them in their tracks. Also, my skin is so flaky and it's driving me mad! I keep moisturising but that doesn't seem to help :/ I ordered an Aveeno bar which is good for dry/sensitive skin and supposedly gets rid of flaky skin, so I'm waiting for that to arrive which hopefully solves this crisis. My red marks are so bad, even under makeup and I cringe looking into the mirror. But I'm thankful that I don't have any full blown pimples at the moment. Hope my skin doesn't go downhill!
Hi,
I am on lymecycline too. I am in about 5 weeks and 2 days. And still get some inflammed acne around my mouth and jawline, not as bad as first few weeks.
I was on doxy before, it clears my acne 100%, but it comes back on body after a sunny holidays.
It was only on body when I started lymecycline. But around second week right before my period I broke out in my face. There were six huge ones around my mouth. I have been breaking out ever since around jawline and some cheek area. All inflamed ones. But my body got improved a lot, it is very smooth there now.
My derm also Suggested me to come and see him after two months. It sounds like that is the standard procedure for them, as yours said the same time duration,

Oops, for some odd reason I couldn't quote you back properly...
But anyway, thanks for replying!
So the doxy did a better job than the lymecycline then? I'm really scared because my acne flares up around my jawline really badly just before my period and I'm not sure if the antibiotics or epiduo will help...it's due soon, so I guess I'll see then. The lymecycline helped your body acne which was your original problem I'm guessing? But broke you out elsewhere, which is a shame 2 months is nearly up for you though! Hopefully your acne issue can be resolved again...let me know how it goes
Yea doxy did a good job when I am on it. I took it like 8 months which is very long time. Knowing that drugs are not ideal for long term, I add these antioxidants as generic weapon, which I think is no harm to try.
- Matcha tea (this is really serious stuff, it is more powerful than a lot of green vegs and other superfood)
- Green smoothie first thing morning (celery, granny smith, green grapes, kale, cucumber and soya milk)
- Probiotic yogurt from supermarket, to prevent antibiotics destruction of friendly bacteria.
I also take supplements like zinc, cod liver oil, evening primrose oil.
I don't start all at once, I added them slowly over a period of time, which I think should allow my body to adjust to them.
Topically, I make vitamin c serum with aloe gel and ascorbic powder from Holland and Barrett and use it before sunscreen. It helps with red marks. I had good experience with really expansive vitamin c serum which costs arms and legs. so I decided to make my own every morning instead. I am using it for 2 weeks so far.
Acne is truly annoying, but I think I learnt a lot about nutrition and care because of that also. So it is not all bad.
Have a lovely weekend.
Btw, I was referred to derm to get roccutance, but I am so scared to take after reading side effects like hair loss, liver failure and premature aging.
So he gave me lyme and isotrex gel. The gel smells like rubbing alcohol so I don't use it on my face. I tried on my back. But I am not consistent with that.
Do the supplements you take help at all? I have cod liver oil at home but I haven't gotten round to taking it. I've also heard about matcha tea, is it any good? I drink green tea daily instead, but this sounds stronger. Also, I found this brand of probiotics online called biokult I think, I keep meaning to order it but keep forgetting; I might just do what you do and instead buy probiotic yoghurt. That mixture you make containing vitamin C and aloe vera sounds really good! I've heard of aloe vera being good for inflammation, but I'm guessing vitamin C also helps with redness too? I'm going to check that out though!
You have a lovely weekend also! Are you also from the UK by any chance?
Roaccutance sounds terrifying because of the side effects...it has a high success rate, but the risks that come with taking it put me off a little :/ it's a bit of a gamble I guess.
Oh, I've heard of isotrex it's like topical accutance I think, although I'm not too sure. Plus rubbing alcohol smells quite strong, I can see why you don't want to use it on your face.
Except green smoothie and matcha (which are not supplements), I don't see any significant changes. There are a lot heathy improvements I did. All theses do help with bringing down from my severe acne to moderate first time around(I.e. The time I was on doxy) not just radically and in a short time.
- Green smoothie gets rid of eczema on my leg and neutralise my oily skin. It lifts my mood as well as making up for my daily veg portion.
- Matcha is very good, I am less moody and makes me eat well. My appetite increases. So I bring enough food to work to make sure that I don't munch on biscuits and random stuffs. It actually makes me relax more. People said having it with a squeeze of lemon in it will boost the benefits. I haven't tried that, but I will give it ago.
Cod liver oil is very big around here and other places on Internet, because of vitamin a and d in it. The one I got is from Holland and Barrett. I takes two tsp a day for 3 weeks so far. It is in liquid form as I want to make sure max absorption. I was told by gp before that I am deficient in vit D. He prescribed me strong vitamin d tablets which I took for two time a week.
I haven't tried that brand of probiotics. I tried Probio 7. It is ok. Considering I took antibiotics for long and didn't get side effects from it, it seems Probio helps. Yogurt I am drinking every morning is called yakult, which I get from Sainsburys. I like the taste of it, so it is not like a chore.
I have used skinceuticals vitamin c serum before I get into diy. It has 10% vitamin c in it. It was good. It brings down the redness on my jawline to really faint one. It does prevent minor breakouts. But I don't want to spend that much on facial topicals anymore. My philosophy has changed. Inner health, calmer mind and effective inexpensive stuffs are my plan now. I strongly believe that my homemade fresh vit c mix will equally be effective. Before I was into adding more and more into my skin routine.
People give good reviews for diy vitamin c serum on makeup alley and reddit websites. Also on YouTube. So I have my faith in it. If you are just starting with C, it might be better to get commercial one first. Just to see if it agrees with your skin. But please make sure you read around first, there are interesting info about it. E.g. Vitamin c oxidises easily from light and air exposure. It changes color when it does. It is most effective when applied topically with vitamin e. I used Dr organic vitamin e oil. Some research backing up skin benefits from applying c and e together topically at 20% Vit c percentage.
The other thing I want to advise is to watch your monthly cycle. I download an app to record my period, it estimates your next ones. You can record any particular symptoms you gets during different time of your cycle. I think it will helps me to take caution for breakouts. Certain food seems to trigger inflamed ones for me, like spicy food, prawns. But I like them so much that I can't cut them out. I sure know peanuts do cause breakouts, I don't eat them anymore. I may sometimes eat cashews, they are equally delicious anyway.
Yes I am from midland .
Thanks for telling me all of this...it's very useful information! I really want to try out the vitamin C for redness...I have a lot of red marks on my jawline and would like to bring that down. But it's better to apply vitamins E and C together? Like you suggested, I'll probably invest in the serum at first then check out websites or videos to see how to make a diy version.
I might also start taking the cod liver oil...I have the liquid version too but it left a terrible aftertaste that put me off it when I tried it once or twice. But I might try and brave the taste this time.
Ooh I've heard of Yakult, so I actually might invest in that since it's easy to find in store. I downloaded a monthly cycle app to keep track of my periods and before I had an app, I always kept note of when my periods where...thing is, I haven't noticed any foods breaking me out. I just know that before my period my face has a horrid breakout which takes days to calm down, so I'm currently dreading that I've heard cutting out gluten is good also, but I find that hard to do...it was difficult enough to cut out dairy. But again, thanks for the info
And ooh you're from the Midlands, that's nice! I'm from London
Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure the vitamin C serum I buy has vitamin E also. I was going to buy it separately which would've been more expensive!
My skin looks so similar to yours! The deep red ones are kinda painful and leave quite prominent marks behind which is so annoying you also get yours primarily on your jawline too, right? Do you think you'll continue with the lymecycline or will you ask your derm to prescribe something else?
I will stay on it. When I was visiting him, I was expecting latest state of the art treatment and tests, but he just throw at me common ones like antibiotics, accutance.
I plan not to rely on him too much. I wanted cause for my spots, not just treating the result itself. But he doesn't look like he can find it out for me.
My nhs gp wrote an open referral letter and I have private health insurance through work. So I gone privately. I could have asked insurer to get me another derm, but if the other is same, then another disappointment for me. I will just try other home remedies first to see how it goes. But I am not definitely going on accutance.
Yeah I think home remedies do help a little, especially diet apparently that seems to make a difference for a lot of people anyway, you have a back up option of asking your insurer to refer you to another derm...might be more helpful than your current one, but I agree accutance seems quite daunting due to the side effects, kinda scary to risk it.
Day 12
I have 3 little whiteheads on my left jawline and one other on my right jawline...thankfully though they're really small and drying up already I hope the progress continues...plus my time of the month is coming up and I'm hoping I don't get my usual flare up. Today though I had such a bad, painful stomach ache it left me bedridden for about 2 hours and I know this is probably a bit of oversharing but I got diarrhoea also
I'm thinking these are the side effects of the antibiotic...I'm so scared these are going to become a common occurrence. I was thinking maybe I should take the lymecycline with food now? Also, I think I'm going to start having yoghurt daily or a yoghurt drink like yakult too because I think these will help combat these side effects...I'll eventually order probiotics if these don't help. I hope tomorrow and the days after I don't experience this!
On another note, my Aveeno bar came today I'm going to use it tomorrow morning for the first time, I hope it helps get rid of the dry, flaky skin.
