Okay so, Im on week 4 of using Differn and my experience is what most of you are also going through. I had mild acne with lots of blackeads and comedones. After trying A LOT of other treatments I went again to my dermatologist and she gave me differin and minotrex. I have been also washing my face 2x day with a cleanser for oily skin. During these 4 weeks my skin has been breaking out like crazy. I wake up with lots of whiteheads and I pop them, then I come from school and have lots of white heads again. I guess that thats good, as all the comedones are coming to the surface. Lets be patient and see how it goes...I really, really hope this works for me :/ Im tired of being scared of looking in the mirror and having to wake up 30min earlier to cover all the imperfections
Hi everyone,
Just found this yesterday and spent my whole day in work (oops) reading it.
My background:
I'm 24 and had pretty moderate acne for the past two years where it has flared up and then improved at times.
However, for the past few months my acne has got much worse. I suffer with many spots around my mouth. chin, jaw line and cheeks.
My doctor has prescribed me with Differin 0.1% and doxycycline. I have been taking this for the last 2 weeks and although it hasn't worked yet (I'm aware it could take up to 8 months) my spots have not got any worse- which is a good sign! Woop!!
I just really want clear skin as it makes me feel so ugly! Here's hoping my journey will be a successful one!
Glad to meet all you people who are going through the same thing and are on the road to having acne free skin with me!
Looking forward to hearing more updates and I will keep you informed on my journey.
If any one has any tips or suggestions that would be super!
Talk soon guys,
Ciara
Hey guys I am now on week 11 and if youre reading this pleaseee stick at it! I literally just realised laat night how well this is working.
Did a little comparison picture of week 1 VS week 11. My before is on the right of the pics and the after is on the left, I dunno why I got too excited when making the collage haha.
I am basically clear regarding acne. I get maybe 1 small bump a week right now, but its barely noticable and goes within a day or 2. Crazy considering I technically still have a week until I am supposed to start seeing results.
Keep it at and good luck
Hey guys I've been on differin 0.1 for about 9 weeks. currently on my 10th week.
I definitely see improvements(would describe it as moderate progress). My old acne scars are fading away and the skin feels smoother. However I am still constantly experiencing breakouts, lots of whiteheads in previously clear area.....
Gotta stick with it at least until week 12. Pimples are not the worst, acne red marks are.......
So glad I found this forum !!
I got my first spout of acne last year at the age of 22 .. pretty much in my chin area!
I freaked ! Tried absolutely everything ..nothing worked. . My self esteem plummeted .. There were days where I would literally burst in to tears for no reason. I was working 40+ hours a week while in full time college &all I wanted to do was hide but never had time to ! My hair dresser noticed my hair on my head thinning (beautiful) & suggested I get a hormone test once I did it was a turning point for me -I was diagnosed with pcos. . I got put on BC (qlaira) which worked wonders for me. My skin cleared beautifully within 3 months! I also changed my diet & exercise I take the supplements
Zinc ccitrate
Vitamin D3
Chromium
Magnesium
& aprebiotic
I also quit smoking
The thing is a month ago I had to come off BC
I had a pretty bad breakout around chin area
I'm back on BC but also using differin in hope of helping my skin heal faster
I'm in week four & having some really unsightly spots ..massive whiteheads & any little lumps are now erupting ! It is so hard not to feel hideous & obsess over this !
I'm soooooo looking forward to week 12 !! Any support would be helpful ! I feel like I'm starting to freak my family& friends out by talking to them!
Hello fellow sufferers!
I am 30, got off birth control about a year ago and started to break out bretty bad. I've always had some acne, but until then Duac had kept it more or less at bay.
So I did some research and had my GP to prescribe me Differin (I also continue with Dalacin T, 2 times a day). It is 3 and a half weeks now. No significant purge (i.e. not remarkably more breakouts than before). It seems to me that the breakouts I get are more easily poppable, before I just used to get huge red bumps I could do nothing about.
One funny thing - it feels like my acne is moving from the center of my face more to the lower half and sides. Has anyone else noticed sth like that?
Some recommendations - I use pure aloe vera gel to combat flakyness and irritation. It does not seem to clog my pores. Sometimes I use it under my make up. And I can tan, if I haven't used differin the night before (although it may be different for other people). It is just that I really like having a tan, I tan easily and it makes my acne less visible, so I go to a tanning salon once a week and take a short session. I am northern european, but rather "dark" or "tan" for our standards (i.e. darker than snow, haha) So I put Differin on for about 4 hrs in the evening, wash it off for the night (use aloe vera instead) and take a short 6 minute tanning session in the morning and no burning so far.
I am thinking of starting using Duac again parallel to Differin and Dalacin - I think it may be good to use under my make up on the most problematic areas.
And just to vent off - I have a really angry spot on my cheek right now, I picked on it although shouldn't have. It did not pop, instead it is now a dark blood-red raw spot and swollen. And I have a dance class tomorrow with some super cute Latin American guys. So there goes my courage to create eye contact. Gonna just look at their toes. Again. What a bummer.
Hey, just a little update!
I am fast approaching 4 months using Differin and nearly 2 months of clear skin and my dermatologist discharged me from the clinic today! She was actually asotunded how well my skin reacted to Differin, wasn't expecting such great results because not even 2 courses of Accutane cleared me! I am sooo happy to continue using Differin forever if I have to lol. I still have pretty dry skin I can't lie but I can combat that WAY easier than lots of acne. Seen the first signs of PIH reduction in the last week or so as well. I hope everyone else is having good results?
Attached a pic of me right now, I am wearing no foundatiom, concealer etc. Never thought my skin would look this good, still can't believe it!!!!
You're so lucky! I havent read all 21 pages but how was your acne to begin with? like was it hormonal, food sensitivity etc?
Also, did you have a purging period? its been 3 months and i have no improvements and heaps of scarring

Honestly it wasnt as bad as its been in the past. After 2nd course of accutane I gaimed mostly comedones with occasional papules. I have no idea of my cause! Dont think it was hormonal as my period never caused too much more and food wise I completely cut out dairy but slowly introduced cheese back cause I love it lol and it hasn't caused any more acne either. Its a mystery I guess lol! Yeah all my purging happened at once and slowly tapered off. I still get the odd microscopic lump under my skin but it goes before it turns into anything bigger.
That really sucks that youre 3 months in and no improvements. Are you gonna stick with it any longer?
I started using Differin 6 weeks ago. First 2 weeks I didn't notice any change, weeks 3-5 - total hell, my face is constantly breaking out, it became sensitive, red and painful, I get big, painful pimples, the kind I didn't usually have before. I'm on week 6 right now, I noticed that my face started to clear out a bit, I still have lots of "bad stuff" on my face, but I noted that everything heals quicker. Hopefully from now on everything will become better and better as I really don't want to go back to what I experienced on weeks 3-5. I wonder, why Differin initially causes pretty bad breakouts?
Not sure if anyone still updates or checks this forum, but yesterday was the end of my 6th week of differin. I still get whiteheads and small pustules around my forehead and cheeks that are reoccurring in places I already had them, also in places I've never had acne before. I went to my derm last week and she told me to stick it out to 12 weeks but my skin is 20x worse than the very light/moderate acne I had before starting differin. I've seen no improvement besides the week I Used a BP spot treatment which worked very well but dried the hell out out of my skin and made me itchy and flaky.
Anyone past the 6 week mark have any advice or comments???

I strongly suggest sticking with it. I needed at least 2 months until I completely stopped having these horrible break outs - there were some good days, but there also were times when I had such breakouts I've never experienced before. Now I'm on my forth month and my skin is so much better - I do have some random pimples here and there, but that's probably because I'm having a pretty stresful month (exams and lack of good sleep) + I let my diet a bit loose. I'm sure my skin will be even better when my holidays finally arrive, but even now those pimples are nothing compered to what I had before.

How long should I stick with it before looking at other treatments? Yesterday was my 2 months mark with differin and 2 weeks since starting doxycycline 100mg tabs once a day, and everything is progressively getting worse.

Hey flyingfox. What kind of acne did you have before you started differin?

hm.. that I can't tell you. Only a doctor who is familiar with your case can truly say what is the right course of action. What I'm saying is - I had a horrible reaction too, but I sticked with it and now I'm happy with the results. Though I'm not sure for how long I should keep using it and admitedly I'm pretty scared that it might come back :(.

Hey flyingfox. What kind of acne did you have before you started differin?
Hey. My diagnosis was moderate acne papulopustulosa. I had horribly clogged pores in general, in all areads of my face + I also had these big, deep, inflamed pimples on my cheeks, which were really painful and slow to heal. Now my skin is much more smooth, I don't have clogged pores on my forehead and my cheeks, maybe still a bit left on my chin. Also, I don't get those big and painful pimples anymore, sometimes a big one appears (especialy if I don't control my diet), but doesn't cause pain and it goes away quite quickly (if I don't touch it). Now my biggest problem is hyperpigmentation, I'll need to find a way to get rid of that. Though, as I said earlier, I'm pretty scared that full blown acne might come back, I really don't want to go through that again :(.
I'm at about week 12 of using Adapalene 0.1% every night and Klaron twice per day. My skin has gotten much better than before but the hyper pigmentation is taking a long time to heal and fade. I still get small pimples around my forehead and chin but it is much easier to handle than before however I thought at this point the Adapalene would have cleared my skin completely. I cleanse at least twice daily with Cetaphil and moisturize at night with jojoba oil and Cetaphil moisturizer. I am hoping to see promising results by the end of this summer and will try to stay out of the sun as much as possible to help my hyper pigmentation fade. Also I want to know if it is safe or okay to use a charcoal blackhead mask to get ride of those blackheads that won't go away. I dont plan on using the mask very frequently but enough to unclog my pores that have been really bothering me.
Not sure if anyone will check this but my question to all differin users who have had success. How/when do you moisturize? If you apply differin after washing your face at night, do you then use moisturizer on top of it? Or, do you just wash, apply differin, and go to bed?

If differin is not too drying for you, you can just go to bed, but if you feel dry then you can apply a moisturizer half an hour after applying differin
Hey yall! I know Im late in the game on this thread, but I wanted to post my Differin journey somewhere that might be useful for others and a place where I can get advice/encouragement/feedback from those who know my struggles. I will try to be as detailed as possible so that I have an accurate record of my experience so forgive me for the lengthy post!
Background - I am a 28-year-old Chinese/Filipino female with moderate acne and I have oily skin. I have struggled with moderate acne since I was 16. For the past two years my skin has been relatively clear with the use of clindamycin and BP combination gel used every night and a salicylic acid wash during the day. Starting June 2017 is when I started getting more frequent breakouts again and I decided to visit a dermatologist in September to get them under control.
My dermatologist put me on OTC Differin 0.1% gel (use at night) and clindamycin phosphate gel (apply in the mornings) and I've been on this regimen for 10 weeks. This is my first time using a retinoid. I use a gentle cleanser at night and in the morning. I wear mineral foundation on top of the antibiotic gel because I cannot walk out of the door with any kind of confidence due to the blemishes, pimples, and this redness mess on my face that has exploded ever since I started my new skin care routine. I exercise 3-4 times a week, I eat relatively healthy, and I limit my skins exposure to the sun. I feel like I'm doing almost everything by the book, but so far, my skin is still broken out even after 10 weeks of continuous use. One thing I must note, I didn't start slowly. I use pea-size amounts of Differin at night and clindamycin during the day, but I went straight into once a day usage (that might have been my mistake) instead of gradually building up to it. I dont moisturize because my skin is already so oily.
Here is a timeline summary of my progress:
Week 1-2: No change in my skin's texture or appearance. Still oily per usual.
Week 3-4: Started to see comedones surface on my forehead. This freaked me out because my forehead would hardly ever break out with maybe 1 pimple every other month there. My breakouts historically surfaced around my mouth, inner cheek, and chin area.
Week 5-6: All hell broke loose. T-zone was covered in bumps/cysts/whiteheads/blackheads¦everything! I'm pretty sure this is the IB everyone talks about I cried a couple of times because I have never seen my skin break out so terribly all over my face.
Week 7-8: Still in IB phase. It's so frustrating because areas where I was clear (forehead and outer cheeks) are now covered in bumps.
Week 9-10: I feel like my skin is trying to recover from the IB, and if it is, it's not doing it quickly what-so-ever. I still get new pimples and my forehead STILL has bumps EVERYWHERE. Granted, I think the bumps are trying to clear out because most of them are turning into white heads and then going away. I have about 8-10 active pimples spread across my chin, cheeks, and forehead with A LOT of comedones across my forehead and cheeks. Bigger pimples/cysts turn into red marks once the pimple decides to go away. Improvements are slight and Im hoping by week 12 Ill have better news. Ill update as time goes on. Right now, I am feeling discouraged and not so happy with my skin because I thought I would see improvements 2.5 months later.
Week 11: Long story short - my face is still pretty broken out but the breakouts have changed. The small bumps have more or less gone down and a lot of them have left red marks. I have gotten more of the deep cystic pimples on my chin and cheeks and I feel like it's taking longer for them to go away. I had my follow up appointment with my derm and she changed up my routine.
She has prescribed the following:
- epiduo forte (pm)
- doxycyline (twice a day with food and water)
Keeping the original prescription:
- clindamycin phosphate (am)
- still using gentle cleanser twice a day
I just ordered my epiduo but started the doxycyline right away (epiduo should arrive in about 5 days). For now I'm going to continue the differin until I receive epiduo in the mail. I'll keep y'all updated how my progress goes. Hopeful this switch will work.
Week 12: Well, 3 full months of treatment is now complete. My current treatment I'm doing is now cetaphil moisturizer before applying the epiduo at night, doxy twice a day, clindamycin once a day in the morning, and a gentle cleanser twice a day. Here are my results - my IB has died down A LOT. My skin has many red marks from the IB. I still have lingering bumps from the IB and i have 2 new pimples, but overall my skin has improved from the IB FINALLY. At this stage of my treatment, I still have a long way to go to get "perfect-ish" skin. I think the switch from differin 0.1% to epiduo 0.3%/2.5% was essential to clearing up my IB faster. Epiduo does burn a little bit after application for about 10-20 min and it does cause minor peeling, but I don't mind it too much. I will start updating my post on a monthly basis moving forward. I have another follow up appointment with my derm in 5 weeks. I'll be sure to keep y'all posted!
Month 4: Small bumps on my forehead are almost all gone and the ones on my left cheek are taking some time to clear out. I recently had a minor break out from my menstrual cycle which left me with 3 active pimples right now but they are on the road to recovery. I still have red marks on my cheeks and chin from the IB but they are starting to lighten up verrryyy slowly. My derm said during my follow up appointment that my skin is looking a little better but she said I am a good candidate for accutane. I want to avoid taking accutane because it sounds like such a harsh drug, but she says it's the closest thing to a cure for acne. If I do not see the results I want after 2 more months, I might consider going on accutane, but it's a slight possibility. For now, I am still on the same skin care routine as mentioned above in my week 12 update.
Month 6: Hey friends - My journey has been a long one but here are some updates:
1. I'm still using epiduo forte every night after washing my face with cetaphil daily facial cleanser. I take doxy 50mg once a day. I apply clindamycin phosphate gel every morning before putting my makeup on (bare minerals). I do not moisturize anymore because my skin is oily.
2. My skin has drastically cleared up. I have red scarring and blemishes that remain and I still have very minor tiny bumps left on my forehead and left cheek. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the results right now.
3. I still don't have the confidence to leave the house without makeup because of the blemishes, but I know with time and patience, this will be a thing of the past, fingers crossed!
Month 9: Hello my fellow acne fighters. Let's get right to the update:
1. Had another follow up appointment with my derm a month ago, so it's been one month of using the following new regimin:
- Went up in strength for retinoids and using Tretinoin 0.025% (in summary, I started with differin 0.1%, then to epiduo forte 0.3%, now Tretinoin 0.025%. The percentages might seem like I went up and then down in strength, but Tretinoin is actually a really strong retinoid so a lower percentage is still stronger than a higher percentage of adapalene) I started applying every other 2 nights and now every other night. The nights I don't use Tretinoin, I apply cetaphil facial moisturizer.
- Washing face every night with cetaphil facial cleanser
- Washing face every morning with neutrogena benzoyl peroxide face wash/mask 3.5%
- Still using clindamycin phosphate in the morning before applying makeup
2. So my face has started to clear up even more. Before I switched from epiduo to tretinoin, my face broke out again but not as bad as my IB (no where near as bad) but still upsetting. Since my new regimin, my face has peeled a bit and my bumps have all gone down except for my forehead. The bumps on my forehead are starting to clear out this week though, so I'm happy about that.
3. The worst part about my skin right now are all the blemishes and red marks from the purging. The left side of my face has a patch of red marks that looks like a a big red birthmark. Makeup is the only way to hide it. I'm hoping it'll fade, but I know it'll be a while before it does. I know it sounds super vain to talk about my face so much, but I just want to have the confidence to talk to people without worrying that they're staring at my acne and acne scars
Month 18:
New routine:
- Benzoyl peroxide face wash (Neutrogena clear pore) in the morning
- Spironolactone/Clindamycin/Niacin mixture cream (prescription) in the morning
- Cetaphil face wash at night
- Tretinoin 0.025% cream (prescription) at night (after my face has completely dried, about 10 minutes after washing)
MY FACE IS 95% CLEAR! It only took a year and a half and many medication adjustments later lol. Holy cow, I just hope that my skin stays this way or gets even better. I'm going to stick with this regimen for a while since it seems to be the one that works the best for me so far. Granted, this could be the result of the long-term application of Tretinoin and religiously sticking to my routine. Side effects are extremely oily skin (but I've always had pretty oily skin). Also note that I have removed dairy and meat from my diet. I may reintroduce these foods into my diet again for experimental purposes, or I may just stick with this since I feel healthier. If anything changes, I'll be sure to update here.
Next year I'm going to try and get off the majority of these medications and go back to over-the-counter stuff since I may or may not try to get pregnant. Spironolactone and Tretinoin are not safe for pregnancy, so please don't get on these medications if you're trying to get or are pregnant.
Hey aybee! Decided to reply to this because Im having a similar experience to you right now. I just completed week 9 on Differin 0.3% and over the past few days my face has broken out all over - even on my forehead - with small bumps. I THINK it has to do with me changing to a healthier diet recently because Im also breaking out on my body, i Ive actually been eating more normally to try to alleviate it a bit. Whether this breakout heals up and calms down or not will make or break my decision on Differin. If by this upcoming week Monday its not cleared up, Im quitting and going on Dans regimen. My skin is still crazy dry every day and when I go surfing (a lot) it just gets worse. PLUS I cant get tan on Differin, whereas the acne.org regimen actually makes you look extra tan. Sticking with Differin for now because Im hoping it will work on the PIH and scars it has created (smh). If I could go back in time I would have simply done the regimen but here I am on Differin, so Im going to try to stick it out.

Hi 808toms! I'm sorry to hear you're having a similar experience but I have high hopes your skin will improve soon. I also hope you're using a good water proof/non-comedogenic sunscreen with all that surfing! I understand the adapelene in Differin makes your skin more sensitive to the sun and it's not recommended to put it back on if your skin is sun-burned. I updated my post last week to mention that I recently switched from differin 0.1% to epiduo forte (which is adapalene 0.3% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%). I think it's working better than the differin 0.1% I was using, but if you're already on the 0.3%, then I think you might see quicker results. I think what I needed was something stronger. Differin 0.1% was working too slow to clear my skin. Right now my skin isn't any where near what I want it to be but I'm actually seeing improvements, which is something I thought I wouldn't be saying for a while lol. So hang in there and test it for at least 12 weeks before deciding to switch! Also, if differin doesn't work out with your life style (sunshine and surfing ) then I bet a switch of your skin care routine that better suits you wouldn't be a bad idea. However, do what you feel is right for you and if all else fails, seeking out professional advice is the best approach!
I have been using differin for about 4 months. I have seen little improvement. My acne is on my forehead, little bit on my cheeks and severe on my chin. The only thing it has managed to do is destroy my skin and worsen my acne. Iv recently given up on antibiotics (DONT use them) and topical treatments and have switched to Just a simple daily wash and moisturiser and my skin has improved and its been like 4 weeks. Lesson here is, the medical route is not always the best option, they ( Dermatologist, doctor etc) only care about making money at the end of the day and just to let you know antibiotics and topical treatments are temporary! The acne always comes back worse, if it hasnt yet, trust me it will eventually
Hello im currently applying Adapalene differin now on its 5th week and im really depressed of this purging stage that i want to stop using it :((( i really dont have acne to begin with, i just have small visible blackheads and very little bumps but i do have bacnes because of my pcos or imbalanced hormones that ive decided to go to my derma, it got worse and now i just want to stop. First two weeks it was itchy and i can see blackheads and whiteheads coming up but now that im about to go to my 2nd day in 5th week? I cant look at the mirror anymore, people around me noticed it and it just sucks whenever they will tell me what happened why are you breaking out!? Help idk if i should go to my derma tomorrow or cut the regimen and go back to my simple regimen... thankyou :(((
This is a great log! Currently on week 2 of Adapalene 0.1% cream (the generic) and am having mixed thoughts on it. Then again, only on week 2 lol so I'll wait the full 4 months and see. My derm said I had mild adult acne but my pores are clogged so it'll take roughly 3 months to clear.. maybe.
I'll keep updating as my journey continues but so far I'm having a BAD breakout on my forehead. I didn't start applying differin until this week there but had been using clinda. on there. Pretty sure it's because my shampoo wasn't cleaning my hair = oil = clogged pores. It had avocado oil in it.
So far, I'm noticing my breakouts are disappearing in about 1-2 days and would take 3-4 days before I started differin. My nose broke out pretty bad but seems to be clearing now. Still have some lingering cheek acne but this is near my jaw/chin so thinking it's hormonal. Or my pores are finally unclogging lol. Many spots are forming heads quickly so I'm thinking this is good progress. Just waiting for that IB... I know it's out there waiting...My skin is super oily naturally so I'm thinking of getting hemp paper and blotting my face with it. Regular ones have mineral oil and that clogs my pores bad.
