No hot water, no shower water (even if cold), just cold water from the faucet, cupped in one hand, splashed on your face for a good solid 3-5 minutes 2-3 times a day, LET AIR DRY, NO TOWELS. This will help in the shedding and oil process, so your face does not build up dead skin, it leaves your skin clean, smooth, and most of all clear. It also allows the skin to heal itself.
Almost all acne is caused by topicals, dry skin, washing to much, or not rinsing at all. For those of you on the "caveman" regime, do this to help with dead skin buildup. For those of you on the water only regime, do this to help with dead skin buildup, allow healing, and stop breakouts from over drying your skin with hot water or towels.
To shower, simply take a cool shower, rinse shampoo out of hair with your head tilted back, and never allow the water to touch your face, the pressure from the shower can be bad for stripping the acid mantle. Dry your hair with a towel, but never touch your face with anything but cold water. Do not touch your face with your hands, ever.
Hot showers, even shampoo was something no one did 50 years back, it is very apparent that almost all acne is formed from stripping the acid mantle, altering the pH of your skin, drying it, and clogging pores with creams/topicals.
I'm again becoming interested in this water only business. I caved in after 1 day last time. My face got so oily is was scary. If I was to do this, it'd be warm water from shower, then splash with cold water (I do cold water splash atm too) and let air dry which I still do. I'm worried about build up of dead skin though and oilyness. I know its the skins process but I've school every day and I don't think I could face my class mates with a shiny oily face with flaking skin. If this was the summer I'd most definitely try this....I'll see though. Also, you think I could exfoliate with a toothbrush if I was to do this water only thing? I use a toothbrush a few times a week already so...

I started this regimen 12 days ago, well without the cold water splash, I'm just doing the caveman regimen - nothing at all touches my face. My face was only really oily for ONE DAY and then it subsided - this is coming from someone whose face was so oily before I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the day at school to wipe it off my face. I have also had no problems with flakes or dead skin. So don't wait until summer - give it a shot now! Just clear your weekend and start on a friday afternoon. I almost guarantee your face will be well on its way to recovery by monday morning.
Also, this is good advice for you and anyone else planning to do this regimen as opposed to the caveman regimen - even water may cause acne, especially in a hard water area. If you don't know what that means, google it. The OP talks about the acid mantle but even hard water can damage it, although much less so than soaps and cleansers. If you are worried about this, get yourself some distilled water to use for splashes.
I have been doing this as well, except I follow with a cotton ball and acv or witch hazel. The water has been helping a lot and reduced oil amazingly. I feel like my oil skin went to almost normal skin in about 3 days. It was pretty pretty oily the first few days. I follow with the toner because I feel scared going comletely water only. Also the toner helps with redness a lot.
I just had a question about dry skin. My skin looks decent, but in the light or up close you can tell its dry and little clogged pores are like little white flakes which sometimes get removed with the cotton ball while toning. Are these white balls pretty normal? How long until the dryness goes away?
Thanks

The white little balls are pretty normal, nothing you need to worry about. And by now you should know how long it will take them to go away since it's been a few months.
I hope this water splash only worked well for you. I'm just beginning to do the caveman regimen myself. But I will probably end up splashing with distilled water (we have very bad well water) after a few days.
keep it up everyone, caveman regimen of nothing will work as well, you dont always need to splash your face with water, i only recommend once a day, but even that isnt necessary.
here is an in-depth video on how skin works and why caveman will work, its sorta boring, but informative.

I respectfully disagree that almost all acne is CAUSED by irritation. Acne is definitely an internal thing for most people but i agree that gentle skin care can reduce acne for many. If your acne begun as a result of topical use, well thats a different story all together.

we have to know more than just "internal", that doesnt help one bit...many people on this forum go on crazy fad diets to try and cure or clear acne, sometimes it helps some people, sometimes not, diet never played any role in my acne...this however did. not only that though, sex hormones weaken my immune system and i believe there is a correlation of that and my acne, at least when i was a teen, i no longer masturbate and as soon as i stopped that and washing my skin cleared up like it use to be when i was 8 years old. hormones seem to be the culprit when we talk about "internal" however, there are so many hormones and so many ways they can cause problem skin its hard to figure it out. also, i think diet just worsens acne, as in if you already have inflammation it just inflames things way more. i eat a pretty healthy diet (at least i think so), of just veggies, fruits, and healthy fats/proteins, i do advocate an alkaline diet to anyone...but to think so many people diet just to clear acne is bad...many people do it for the wrong reasons, and when it doesnt work, back to eating junk and garbage. they need to be eating right for more than just acne...
I have a couple questions about this method. Is there any issues cupping with two hands instead of one? Also after a shower I like to turn the water super cold and put my face under it for 10 seconds, could that cause any damage? Last question, while I really like the method about letting the air dry your skin instead of a towel, my eyebrows/sideburns sometimes get real itchy if I don't dry them, is that normal and could I use a tissue to dry the hair on my face? Thank you.
I would say that no, using one or two hands to splash your face either way is fine. I typically don't get any water in my face, but if I want a refresher, I just splash some cold water on with two hands and let my face air dry. Putting your face under the stream of the shower might cause irritation. Some find that it helps to exfoliate the skin when they put put their face in the shower stream. Personally, I don't do that, but you will have to find what works for you. I would say that drying your facial hair is fine. I don't have this issue (I'm a woman lol) but if the water irritates those places, drying lightly with a tissue should be perfectly fine. Good job going water-only! I'm almost to week 3 and loving it!
Hi Guys, I see here that you let your face dry from the air. Im currently just starting to do this, but does drying with a towel remove dead skin? I realised just earlier that I have been using dirty towels to dry my face, which can only make things worse, but are there any negatives to air drying?
Most do not use towels to dry their face because towels often hold bacteria and can cause irritation. I let my face air dry, then use a damp muslin cloth or cheese cloth that I gently exfoliate with once a week to solve the dead skin issue. I wouldn't say there are negatives to air drying, unless the water you are using is causing irritation if it is hard water--in which case you may want to use no water at all on your face.
I have a question.
The water in my city (the water on my college campus, particularly) is hard water and sometimes makes my skin feel dry and itchy everywhere. Does anyone think it be worth it to try distilled water on my face instead? I have recently decided to only wash with cool or room-temperature water.

Try using a spray bottle, filling it with mineral water, and spritzing it on your face after washing with tap water. I have the same problem where the tap water makes me feel super itchy, and I've been doing that which seemed to be helping.
If you're willing to spend a little extra money though, consider using the Avene Thermal Spring Water (or any product similar to it) before your skin care. I used to use it on the plane to refreshen my skin when it would become ridiculously dry, but I found that it helps to moisturize my face a bit better than mineral water and far more than tap water.
