yes, i have come to the conclusion that probiotics do not work for me. I tried taking them for well over a month and nothing worked. I don't believe it is an imbalance of good bacteria in my system. I think my problem is mainly hormonal cause my dad and grandpa had the same acne from 16-20. Just like me. I'm almost cured because i drink green tea everyday (anti-androgens), get lots of fiber (fruits, vegetables, glucomannan, and psyllium) and have done multiple liver flushes. (liver is one of the most important organs, controls hormones and countless other things). I also masturbate less.
well I've been taking it for a month and all i've gotten are breakouts. I'm gonna stop for a week see it clears up my face. if it does, then I'll try taking it again for a bit to see if I break out again. that way I'll know for sure.
Hi guys,
I'm sorry to hear it's not a silver bullet for you. But it's not for me either. I don't eat dairy and I stick to a low carb diet. Dairy is the worst culprit I have ever found for acne... it messes with your hormones, increases your dht etc. If one eats a high carb diet (maybe even moderate carbs) and eats a lot of dairy then probiotics is not going to solve the issue. Carbs in general are really bad for health. Eating a high carb load is maybe the most stressful thing you can do to your body... increases cortisol which is connected to bad health effects and dht as well. Another thing is that I'm 34 and some of you are younger with different hormone levels. For me, cutting out all dairy resolved my acne by 80% and going low carb solved the rest... but i would still break out sometimes and it was really hard to control. Then when I found water kefir and added that in, for the first time in my life my acne completely disappeared, and I also found that I could now eat some carbs. However, I still find that dairy will make small pimples form with a few days. If I could send a message back to my younger self it would be to go low carb, cut out dairy, eat lots of greens or algae to alkalize, take herbs to lower stress hormones like ashwagandha (at night because it makes you sleepy) and take water kefir.
Best of luck to everyone.

How much kefir do you recommend that I drink in a day?
How much kefir do you recommend that I drink in a day?
I usually end up (for just myself one person) leaving in the jar, one cup of grains, 4tbs sugar, 1tbs molasses, and about 16 ounces of water. I would say you would probably want to drink 8-16 oz per day, and if your grains start to grow larger than about 1 cup, then you can eat the excess grains too. How much you drink kind of depends on how much water you put into your batch. So perhaps, and 8oz batch might have the same amount of probiotic as a 16oz batch... so it's just up to you. The amount of kefir grains and the amount of sugar are the keys, and the water amount is kind of variable. Hope that helps.
I'm now on day 2 of drinking 500ml of Kefir water each day. Results are positive with a couple of new spots today, compared to maybe 6 on a normal day. My skin is very inflamed and I'm using just pure jojoba and this maybe purging a little, so I'm hoping for more positve results in a day or so.
Also, I am not following any diet restriction at all and eating junk food.
My Kefir was made with the grains, 1000ml of filtered water, 3 tablespoons of golden caster cane sugar and some Sun Maid Natural dried raisins. Left it for 48 hours and then into the fridge. Drinking 500ml in 3 equal amounts spread out over the day.
This didnt work for me, but I will try it again... I liked the taste of it.
I know the OP actually warned against buying the storebought water kefir, but I picked up a bottle at Whole Foods just to see if anything would happen if I took the water kefir the way the bottle directs (1 tablespoon per day). Also, I live in a very hot climate in the summertime, and I was so afraid that my kefir grains would be destroyed by the heat during shipping, if I ended up ordering one of those water kefir starter kits during these hot months.
I've been taking the water kefir for about 2 weeks now, and I think it has greatly improved my digestion. I also noticed this month, I didn't really get a breakout, and I have one lump that shows up just below my mouth on the right side that appears like clockwork for about four days in the middle of the month, and this month it never made its regularly scheduled appearance! I don't know if it's because of the water kefir, or because I changed my diet so radically in the past month. But whatever the case, I do think the water kefir has helped me.
And I'm with you on the taste. I thought it was really weird at first, but now I quite like it!
Day 10
Have been drinking 250ml of Kefir water twice daily.
My back is is totally clear for the first time in years just using my regular soap.
Face is almost clear, but am just getting the odd small spot that disappears pretty quickly using Manuka Honey (24 UMF), which I believe is really helping in conjunction with the Kefir water.
I now just use Manuka Honey (24 UMF) as a mask before I wash my face. This can be for a few minutes before or overnight. No soap or other other creams. I also leave honey on to spot treat, when I'm not leaving the house.
First, I quit dairy over a month ago, and believe it made a significant difference in the number of new spots on my face each day (perhaps from 5-10 small whiteheads I would pop to 2-5 each morning). Also, for two weeks I've been consuming a green smoothie each day. I noticed some people found probiotics effective with fiber to help digestive health. I thought I would get the fiber from a more natural source and take all the other nutritional benefits with it.
I decided to try the kefir primarily to see if it would banish my acne once and for all but also because I identify with the general skin health side of the argument. I have suffered from eczema since childhood, mostly on my hands, but occasionally on the soles of my feet, elbows, knees and wrists. Also, I get geographic tongue occasionally which the dentist says has nothing to do with anything and is not something to worry about.
I started consuming my kefir batches about a week ago. Today no new spots, my tongue is clearer, and my hands and feet look better. Very early to tell, since these issues go through cycles, but perhaps this is my silver bullet?

I used to get this weird rash on the back of my hands... little red dots appeared. It seemed like it was alive, like candida or something, because it would kind of migrate across the skin over time and would get really dry and burn sometimes. If I didn't put lotion on it would take over my hand. That also completely disappeared for me after water kefir!

Well, is it alive? Buy a bottle and pour some into a glass, cover with a coffee filter and let it sit out. Does it still taste sweet after a day, 2 days, 3 days? I've bought that kind of stuff before and it's just completely dead. We know from our home brew water kefir that it is ALIVE... it bubbles, it changes into vinegar. If it stays sweet then you know for sure it's dead. So I guess if it's actually alive then store bought is fine. The other thing about store bought is that it costs probably 10+ times as much as home brew.

I know for sure that home brewed kefir is less expensive, however I live in a very hot climate in the summertime, and I was so afraid that my kefir grains would be destroyed by the heat during shipping if I ended up ordering one of those water kefir starter kits during these hot months.
I have been thinking about brewing my own water kefir at home this fall when it cools off.
I'll try pouring some of mine into a glass, and then setting it out to see what happens. Hopefully, it will not be sweet-tasting in two or three days.
This is the label of the brand of water kefir I bought from Whole Foods. I'm not sure if by looking at it, you can determine if it is decent water kefir or not, but I figured I might as well post a pic of it up on this thread to see if you think it looks legit.

Hi aquapurity, thanks for such a helpful post first of all... I'm a 23 year old female and have been suffering from mild-moderate acne mostly on my chin this year and I think it started with my bad digestion. But not 100% sure. I've been to the doctors with tummy problems a few times but they just said I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I love carbs and I love dairy but for clean skin there's nothing I won't try...
SO from yesterday I'm on no dairy (I'm trying to go raw vegan actually), and bought water kefir grains on eBay a few days ago so they should come in the mail today or tomorrow. I bought all other ingredients and am so excited to try it. My question is... how do you know when the kefir is fermented enough to drink? and can I put the rest in the fridge if I don't finish?
I'm really hoping it'd make my digestion better too cause my tummy is way too sensitive
I also found a good video on YouTube on how to make water kefir... by greenmomzoe I think
I will let you know how it goes

Please keep us updated on your progress. I'm really interested in the impact water kefir has on other people here on Acne.org.
Hi so I got my water kefir grains today in the mail, and made my first batch. Apparently you can reuse the grains which is great cause I don't wanna have to keep buying new ones. I wrapped the jar in my scarf to speed up the fermentation process... I wanna drink it tomorrow
So excited!!
*next day*
my kefir is bubbling... yay

I thought this instructional video for making water kefir was really helpful. I don't make my own batches yet, but when and if I do, I will use this video to help me. The company that produced this video also seems to make some pretty great water kefir starter kits. I believe the company is called Cultures for Health.

Hey there, Aquapurity
Well, I sat my store bought water kefir out for three days. Today, which is the third day since I sat the water kefir out, I tasted the water kefir. It tasted basically like vinegar. The closest thing I can compare that taste to is apple cider vinegar.
I'm guessing this is a good thing?
I'd love some feedback.

Today's my 3rd day of drinking water kefir (I've been drinking 500ml each day) and I really like the taste I must say... I'm not seeing any results particularly just yet but it does seem to make me a bit gassy (but OP mentioned that'd happen when you first start). I'm not getting any new zits though, just some whiteheads on my chin and it's that time of the month for me at the moment. Just a question, did water kefir help with your whiteheads (if you ever had any), aquapurity? cause they are my biggest enemy... I am just SICK of whiteheads :/
My question is... how do you know when the kefir is fermented enough to drink? and can I put the rest in the fridge if I don't finish?
You can drink it at any time. If you drink it too early it will be too sweet, full of sugar, but it would still have live good bacteria in it. If you drink too late, then it turns into vinegar and it's yucky. I would say you probably want to drink it when it's about 80% fermented. It's just a matter of taste. Probably the best way it ferment it until 60% and then stir it up and pour out the liquid into a secondary container for secondary fermentation. Then you add fruits for flavor or whatever and let it go the rest of the way for taste.

Gassy is GOOD! Your have to let the process complete. It will take about 5 days or so and then the gas disappears forever.

Yes that sounds perfect. As long as it changes to vinegar then you know it's alive because the bacteria are consuming the sugar.
