I have a question that I haven't found any kind of answer in the net. Is there a difference between SD that you have because of the genes of your family, and the one that you caused on your own using agressive treatment for acne or someting else using expansive cosmetics that includes chemicals or lazer theraphy? I wonder because my case is the second one - none of my family had ever this desease, and I haven't got SD never before in my life. It appeared 100% after I caused it with treating my redspots after my acne ( lazer+corticosteroid) and the SD I have shows only on my face (I know usually it appears in other areas on the body). And also this may lead to different treatments of SD. Anybody?
Okay, so I was talking to my mom last night. I guess when my mom was pregnant with me she had gestational diabetes. When I was a baby, I had "Baby Acne" on face and in groin area pretty severely. I was allergic to nearly everything and would make my skin worse if I came in contact with anything that was unnatural. For instance, I could only drink Soy Milk and use only sheep skin as a pillow/blanket. I was not breast fed. Babies naturally have a weakend immune system. Up until 14 years old I didn't have any acne/irritations/rashes/allergic reactions until I started tetracycline (acne meds) and used everything under the sun on my face until it was literally burned. Since 14 years old my skin has NEVER recovered--it looks weak, brittle, and red. I was diagnosed with SB when I was 15 and still have it to this day (almost 24). I went to a nuturopathic doctor last week and she informed me that I have Candida (which I already expected). I have oral thrush, hair falling out, terrible scalpe, etc. I also had cradle cap when I was younger. I am getting food intolerance test done and bloodwork on my liver, glucose levels, among many others. So instead of going on this diet right off the bat, I would highly recommend getting blood work and a thorough physical done so you aren't taking stabs at curing something in the dark. I brought the point up of my baby history and diabetes is because I fervently believe it deals with a weakened immune system first and foremost. What causes the weakened immune system? I cannot be for sure--I'm not an M.D. And I am through guessing what symptoms I have and want the SIGNS fact-checked. I feel as though everything is inter-connected with one main problem. I do think genetics plays a part, however, I think these genetics can be put in a dormant phase IF you correct the underlying issue. I'm sure many of you have given up with your regimens and it's definately disappointing to them constantly thwarted by other speculations. If you gather the facts, and not opions, of your overall health with bloodwork and the like, I'm sure many of you will be successful in treating this nuisance of a disease. And don't think you are shallow or that you are wrong in trying to figure out a cure--you just want an even playing field. P.S.--DON'T TRUST ANY DERMATOLOGIST!
Simeon, I believe that genetics play a role, however, I think they are just brought to the forefront WHEN and IF something like you mentioned described above happens. I'm not entirely sure of your medical history but since you had acne, I'm guessing you were on some type of antibiotic--possibly for an extended period of time. I don't know what role your diet has played as I don't know you and your overall health. But I sincerely, in my own humble opinion, believe that your bout with Seb D. can be put behind you if can dichotomotize the problems of your skin. Dermatitis health is not skin deep, even though it may seem that way. The laser can essentially wipe of the healthy part of the skin and let this yeast to grow. Not sure how old you were when you had acne, but maybe your liver isn't functioning properly. Maybe your antibiotic regimen lasted longer than you would've hoped and you didn't take PRObiotics following this regimen (which dermatologists don't tell you to do). I get what you're saying though; you think that because your SB was triggered by some artificial facial resurfacing can be different. I feel as though it can be corrected; the skin is an organ just like a heart, liver, and kidney. And skin can be rejuvenated if your insides allow your skin to rejuvenate--so long as you didn't permantly scar your face (which I'm sure you didn't). I've been researching and obsessively delving into the subject of skin for years now, and I have gone through the struggles, so I feel your pain. I would first go to both a M.D. and N.D. (naturopath) and get both sides of the story. Please, get your bloodwork done by both doctors and see the differing opinions and synergize them into YOUR overall understanding of this disease. Medical history is important, and sometimes your past, no matter how small a nuance it may be, can resurface itself later in life. Cheers, and good luck.
Does anyone else seem to have a seb. derm. outbreaks that occur when allergy season peaks? I have really bad seasonal allergies and for the last 5 years or so I have had a bad outbreak every year around early March at the start of allergy season. Sometimes it goes away all together during other times of the year. The first year the seb derm only stayed for a month or two, but it seems each year it stays a little longer than the year before.
Anyone experience something similar or able to shed any light on this? I figure it must be tied to the immune system somehow.
Thanks.

Have you tried coal tar or pine tar soap? They both help for allergies and seborrhea. Smells bad while you are using it, but it works.
Hello everyone, I would recommend getting extensive blood work done to rule anything out. I got it done recently and found out I have slightly elevated thyroid levels (doctor is putting me in an all-natural hypothyroid supplement (which report back how it does), pre-diabetes, and am deficient in Vitamin D. I haven't checked for other metals, vitamins, etc. I also took a food interolerances/allergies test, the results should be coming back within the next few days. This tested for over 150+ foods. The funny thing is when I took the fasting glucose test I had been a SEVERELY STRICT no-sugar/no-starch diet. So I'm guessing my levels would've been extremely high. Unfortunately, high blood sugar is something not too good for Seb. Derm. Think of the skin as a warning sign. Luckily, people care about their looks and that's the only time they actually go to the doctors (like me) and find out there is actually a chemical problem going on within our body. Going on a strict diet for Candida or Seb. Derm. won't help if you have thyroid problems, as thyroid problems alter our hormones and cause a weakened immune system. Also, if you do get your TSH results back make sure they're close to 1-2 as 3+ isn't an optimally functioning reading. Also, if you're on a strict diet, and you don't know the foods that cause a toxic-like reaction in your digestive system, then you won't know what foods to diet on. I've been eating a lot of chicken but my doctor told me that my blood type doesn't usually react well to chicken. So all along I've been eating something that could be interpreted as something foreign in my body. My Seb. Derm. isn't as bad as it was, but I still can't touch my face without skin flaking off or being able to go to the beach without my face ballooning up like a baboon's ass. When I get my food allergies test back I will transfer the info to you all and hopefulyl there is a correlation. Also, I will report back on if thyroid supplements help alleviate Seb. Derm. symptoms. Cheers, and good luck.
any news yet on those intolerance tests? Im curious as I had ALCAT testing done and found i'm so intolerant to so many things I've been eating. My seb derm as flared badly now and the ketoconzole is not helping much at all...diet is good and only the occasional cheat with a gluten free cookie. I m wondering if my thyroid is out of whack as well.hmmm
Yes I called the doctor up today and got some encouraging/discouraging news. Her first response was "Um, a lot of stuff showed up on the test...Dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, yeast and a lot of other random stuff." Unfortunately, all that I have been eating is eggs and fish as I'm trying to find a candida diet and those are two of my main sources of protein. I am considered average weight but I can tell that I am not. It's very difficult for me to gain weight. Also, I wondered why I would get incredibly hung over and break out in a seborrheic like rash on my face after drinking and would take three days to fade. Please, everyone on this board get food allergy testing done. If you're following an anti-candida diet don't be like me and consume foods that will have an adverse reaction. I woke up today with a MONSTROUS cyst under my left armpit. It hurts to type. This must be all related to the digestive system and has been going on for YEARS. Does anyone else on this board have multiple food allergies, with slightly elevatedTSH levels, and considered pre-diabetic. I have way too many symptoms going on here, and I'm getting worried. I just want my fuck*** life back. Haven't gotten the thyroid meds yet cause I don't have enough money right now. My mom thought I was crazy but now she's coming around and realizing this ain't no joke.

What kind of doctor did you see to get your foot allergy testing done? Was it a General practitioner or an Allergist? Just trying to determine how I would go about getting this done. Didn't I read somewhere about some internet based company that you can have a blood sample sent to for testing?

Thanks, I will look into that. I just find it strange that my seb derm appears around the same time every Spring. It started about 5 years ago and has stayed longer and gotten progressively worse every year. Could this be something other than seb derm? Maybe related to the sun or pollen/allergens?
I did have a biopsy done last year and the dermatologist told me it was Seb Derm. She also told me it wasn't related to diet and I should put cort-aid on it though. The rash is mainly on the bridge of my nose and extends onto my cheeks a little bit when it gets bad. I also had it on the tips of my ears for a brief time a couple of years ago.
Any input is appreciated.
Not sure if this has been addressed in thread yet, but I have been told by my derm that clearing your head of seb derm is key in your face healing. If you have very unhealthy and hard to treat skin on your face, don't forget to treat your scalp as it probably has patchy areas as well. I never even thought about the treatment of my scalp and since starting treatment on it, it has seemed to help my face a bit. It is still very early to tell if it will help in the long run, but it makes sense to me on a level.
I have come to the conclusion that when my acne is bad my sd is good and vice versa. It seems that whatever I do to my skin to improve my acne worsens my sd and whatever I do to improve my sd worsens my acne.
My SD has improved a lot over the past 6 months since I started on the candida diet and started using antifungals - garlic, oregano oil, grapefruit seed extract and olive leaf extract. When I stopped using proactiv it initially made my SD and acne worse but eventually my skin got used to not using proactiv anymore and my SD improved considerably. The only downside of the diet is that I've lost 7kgs in 7 months and I was thin to start with and now look like skeletor.
However, a couple of months after ditching proactiv I constantly have acne on my chin and the front of my neck. A couple of weeks ago I decided to do something about it and started using a mild sulfur soap (3%) on my neck as I have been using it on my chest and back to good effect for the last couple of years. The results were good so I decided to try it on my chin. Whoa was that a mistake! My acne was gone but my chin and cheeks broke out with SD like crazy for the first time in months. I stopped that experiment and two weeks on my SD has cleared and lo and behold my acne is back.
My skin is ultra sensitive and anything I do for my acne chronically dries my skin and inflames my SD. If I had to choose which I had to live with I would choose acne as I don't get it as badly as SD. But I would rather be rid of both. Sorry for the long post but has anyone experienced this and have any suggestions?
Best shampoo for dry scalp? Using Head % Shoulders at the moment will give it a little longer but not sure it's helping much.
Also have started Accutane, was wondering if there was any interplay between the two and if anyone found their SB get worse or clear during and after the course.
I have not read that BP helps SD...where have you read that and how do you apply, to active spots and preventative?
In this thread several people have mentioned it.
I apply BP all over my face as part of the Regimen. It gets rid of old spots and prevents future spots.
My main reason for starting the BP in the first place was anti-acne, but after I started I noticed that my SD began to go away as well. The first step was recession of flakiness/bumpiness caused by SD. In only a day or two, the SD patches felt almost the same as the surrounding "normal" skin. After that the only thing that remained was to wait for the SD-induced redness to fade, which didn't take longer than four or five days.
If your skin isn't overly sensitive or allergic to BP it's definitely something to try. Keep in mind that you have to keep applying BP. If your SD goes away and you ditch the BP, the SD will just come back.
After a long battle I have finally found what cleared my Sebhorrheic Dermatitis. I was not a casual sufferer as I had heavy plaque Sebhorrheic Dermatitis on two or three places on my scalp. I was well beyond a "little redness"...I take no credit for the "cure" as I found it on a post on another long abandoned thread on another board. This is what worked for me and its simple and quick..
Swab entire affected area with alchol two to three times a day
Put abreva (cold sore medication) on the affected spot two times a day
Take a high quality probiotic for two weeks
I have literally tried every method I have seen listed to no avail. I started the probiotic one week ago and started the alchol and abreva two days ago. My scalp is already 99% better. No medicine or no routine has ever had this level of success regardless of intensity or duration.
I thought this might be a fluke so I had two people on another board that I am on try it. Both had success within a week. I wanted to validate that my results werent a fluke before posting. Abreva is expensive and I am NOT guaranteeing this will work for you. Im simply trying to help anyone that needs its. I have had so much false hope with miracle cures with my SD that I do my best not to suggest anything that I havent had success with. I know how it is to get your hopes up only to have them dashed. Dont flame me if this doesnt work for you because I know the Abreva is expensive. It took everything in me to spend the money on it as I felt it was another goose chase. After everything I have done it seems so simple and quick of a solution that it doesnt seem possible. I have had really good results and would recommend it to anyone so far. The "treatment" flies in the face of everything I have learned about SD so if you are a skeptic I completely understand. The lady that posted the cure stated that she felt the alchol killed the bacteria and the abrevia killed an underlying virus that was causing the issue. Works for me so its good enough.
They are doing some really promising work in the area of heavy metals and the corelation between SD. There is a urine test (Urine Clelation) that you can have to test to see if you have high heavy metals. The test should be covered by insurance so if you go to the doc have them run the test. There is hope for a long lasting cure.
Glad theres a thread for this. I currently have seborrheic dermatitis. First time having it. Ive always had a little redness and dryness on the edges of nose, but was always told its normal and I honestly never noticed it and neither did anyone else. But I had it on my scalp, but has been cleared with Ketoconazole shampoo (nizoral). But I still have a couple red spots near my nose above my mustache line. I also have redness on my chin on the right side. I also get pimples there too, which isnt helping. My skin was very dry and flaky on my chin and when the flakes fell off, they left red/brown marks. Now im dealing with that. Im pretty sure that was the seb derm as well. My derm gave me the ketoconazole shampoo to use on my scalp, and said used it on any spot on my face where i have the seb derm. Its really doing nothing. I have 0 flaking, just redness/discoloration. It fuckin sucks! I get the occasional pimple, but I can live with that. The redness is killing me.
The derm also gave me aquanil hc which is a hydrocortisone 1%. Its soothing, but doesnt really seem to do anything for the redness. She said if it doesnt clear up after 2 weeks, they will give me an oral antibiotic.
Im moving to NYC tomorrow from So cal, so ill be using a different derm. Thats the first thing im doing when I get there. Im 22 yo male, and I had acne for about 3 years, and FINALLY cleared it up 100% just about when i turned 21. I was clear for about a year. Then I went to Vegas and my skin broke out, came back home, and developed the seb derm. If you can believe it, the derm that I went to that cleared up my acne before put me on tazorac for the seb derm, not knowing what it was. That made my skin sooooooo fucking red. An acupuncturist recommended pearl powder to help with the redness, and it helps a little, but just temporary. I also use emu oil which ive been using for a really long time hoping it would calm the redness. It does but again, temporary. I need a fucking PERMANENT solution for this, or something that will at least clear me back up to 100% where I was, and im able to use a product for maintenance. Im hoping a derm in NY will be able to clear my skin back up to the way it was 3 months ago. I never thought I would be back in this situation. I was loving life..LOVING life with clear skin. I could do ANYTHING I wanted and I had all the confidence in the world. Now, im shut down. Moving to NYC is going to be so hard knowing my skin isnt clear.
Theres so many things everyone says to try, and I dont know what to try. Ill have to trust a derm in NYC on what products to use to clear me back up. Praying I get something that works. Im 22 like I said, and I just wanna enjoy life and meet girls and do everything that I wanna do that makes me happy, but im so self conscious that I cant!
i've had SD on my face for a month now. last week i finally went to my derm because nothing else was working. he prescribed nizoral cream. i know i've only been using it for about a week, but i'm still anxious about my results. for a couple days it was starting to peel off, but last night it came back full-blown and i'm getting really depressed because i finally cleared my skin up recently and i thought i wouldn't have to deal with this "feeling-too-ugly-to-leave-the-house" nonsense anymore. from what i can tell the peeling helps but as my skin is sensitive i don't want to use any harsh potions to induce peeling.
my doc said i could go back and see him if the nizoral cream didn't work within two weeks, and i'm glad he's willing to help me combat this aggressively, but i've done some googling and i'm getting scared because i'm hearing these horror stories of people having to deal with the same SD patch for years.
i'm currently using nizoral and pine tar soap and also taking acidophilus, biotin, zinc, and vitamin c. anyone else know something i can do? i heard that washing your face with head and shoulders and leaving the lather on for a few minutes helps?
What are those tiny bumps under your eyes? I have them too...
Hello all. I've had SD on my face for about 9 months now.. and something i've been noticing is that when i go to sleep, the SD flakes are bigger and more pronounced on my face when i wake up. Any idea why this might occur? Could it just be from rubbing my face on my pillow when i sleep, which somehow causes these flakes to be bigger? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks for the info
