uoduck05, is sugar the only thing you limit on your diet? what about fruit?
i have been experimenting with my diet also. right now I am gluten free, dairy free, sugar free (mostly), and nightshade free. I have seen improvement with this diet for sure, but it has been slow.
Has anyone else on here experienced any other symptoms that seem to coincide with the seb derm? I have had a bad pain in my right hip that comes and goes... it started around the same time I got the rash this spring. I have been tested for everything under the sun and the doctors are clueless.
Here is an interesting product that those of you who have decided to fight your SD by tackling candida/unhealthy gut flora/imbalance may find useful:

I just got my first bottle of the liquid form of this today and will be taking it along with my probiotics.
I'm so glad i came across this thread. I'm not completely sure what i have as i have not been diagnosed, but i think it may be SD, seeing as how i have all of these symptoms and i can relate to the people here.
I definetly think that anti-biotics and acne creams have made my condition like this. But i fear it may be skin damage, so using more products to control it could be making it worse long term, and even more difficult to control.
The flaking skin is impossible to get rid of and it seems to only be getting worse. This is especially bad in the summer. My skin has become so thin and sensitive i cannot even go out into the sun for more than a few minutes. I burn so easily and then the peeling becomes even more intense. I see a few people here have recommended a change in diet. I have tried cutting out sugar and eating a more healthy diet and it seems like it helps at time, but at times it also might make it worse. Sometimes when i eat a lot of sugar at once for brief time it would seem like my skin is getting better. I don't know anymore, i have no idea what direction i should go into.
I went to one dermatologist for this. She agreed with my assessment on the condition but offered no real solutions. She just gave me over the counter moisturizer and some face wash. The face wash is ok as it doesn't irritate the skin, but it doesn't really help with the condition, just cleans the face.
I cannot use the moisturizer because it just makes things worse. Instead of helping bring moisture to the skin it just pushes the dead skin out. So i end up looking even more strange after using it. Like i have an oily wet peeling face. I have no idea what to do . I am thinking of visiting some private dermatologists, but i have a feeling all they will do is recommend chemical peel treatments. I'm sure these will help short term, but long term probably make things a lot worse.
It's nice to know that there are other people with these problems and that we are not alone. Thanks for listening guys.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing with your skin.
Are you 100% sure that your condition is SD??
Quick update.
Be carefull with the antifungals.
3 weeks ago I increased my intake of coconut oil and Pau Darco tea, and my face broke out all over again.
The stuff works, no doubt about it. The white coating on my tounge (Candida) decreased significantly when I took all that antifungal, but my face and body could not handle it.
Also, I am testing different foods for intolerance right now, and thats not possible if my face is constant broken out, so I had to stop the antifungals while thats going on.
1 week after I stopped the antifungals my face cleared up, and I was once again acne free. But the white coating is slowly returning, so I have to start taking them again as soon as possible.
I just have a couple of foods i need to test, before I start up again.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing with your skin.
Are you 100% sure that your condition is SD??
Hey, sorry for the late reply. There seemed to be a problem with my account. No i am not sure if it is SD. I am just speculating based on the symptoms.
I should probably visit a few more dermatologists to get a better assesment. But i am a bit discouraged from my last visit, especially considering the dermatologist i saw was supposed to be very good.
I don't want to go too much into my case, because it's mainly speculation. But for the last couple of years i have had a frequent ongoing problem with urination and having to go several times within an hour, especially after drinking a glass of water, instead of just once. Perhaps it could be some other internal problem that is casuing this. The medical clinic i have went to several times now are starting to look at me as a hypochodtriac though. So i guess i will have to be really persistent to find the root cause. But i am starting to think it might be just skin damage, which would be the worst case. Anways sorry for rambling so much, i do feel a bit strange talking about this, but i think its important to look at all the factors.
Thanks for the reply. Have you been diagnosed with SB, and if so are your symptoms similar to mine? I would really like to know more information about you case, if you are willing to share. Thanks for the reply.

Hi,
You would really need to get a proper diagnosis before anyone on here could set about giving you advice.
I actually had SD all my life but I did a bit of research on it, then went through a lot of trial and error but finally managed to cure myself of it. I would be very happy to share my experience with you and help you as best I can but would really need to know if it's SD you actually have.
Thanks!!!
i'm going to try ACV starting tomorrow. i used it before on acne - and I didn't really notice anything great - but I didn't have this problem!
I had bad seb derm and was using Hydrocortisone cream 1% for 6 months. But it was making my skin worse whenever i was not using it. I found a few studies showing that acetic acid acts as a yeast inhibitor (of which seb derm is suspected to be caused by the malassezia yeast). This is why ACV works. I have just started using ACV (and dropped everything else to test its effects in isolation) for a week now, and it has significantly reduced redness, pustules by around 85% (and zero flaking). The only thing i'm concerned about now is long term ACV use?
i HAD SD bad. a lot said here works like nizoral on the face etc. i would wake up find my nose
area RED RED ... then between my brows ... on my brows & to a lesser On my chin. i could
feel it coming on. heres what i did. wash ... with dial liquid ... its now got mositurizer, then
witch hazel ( NON ALCOHOL), BUT my derm gave me a hyroC cream .. (i thing .05%). EVERY
DAY i was & apply it. (i also had 4 IPL).... If i dont use the cream for 2 days IT comes back,
but if i use it im free of it
Hey all. I think that due to maintenance on the site today
I received an email notification of a personal message that had
been sent to me but when I checked my messages there were
no new messages in it. If you sent me a pm but haven't got a reply
this is why. Please resend and I'll get back to you asap. Thanks!!!
This is a link to a sub-forum of a rosacea board. It is almost entirely made up of seb derm threads. I'm sure most who have posted on this thread have been over there but just wanted to post it anyway. The info there is better laid out there unlike this giant thread. It also has 2 stickied threads with common seb derm treatments as well.
[Edited link out]
If you're like me though, nothing has worked. I've had seb derm for over 10 years and tried everything but to no avail. A lot of recommended treatments work at first but quickly fail. An atkins type diet approach is beneficial but no cure by any means. I also find honey masks to be slightly helpful but i don't like the coconut oil because my skin is already oily. Born to be mild and all anti-dandruff soaps have been to harsh for my skin. No anti-fungal creams have really done anything. Hydrocortisone helped for a couple of weeks than made my face red and then lost all effectiveness. ACV didn't really do anything but it aint a bad toner if you want to use one although it leaves my face looking red. I've basically tried everything recommended that has been found effective.
Not to point out the obvious but there seems to be a ton of people who have there own special 'cure' for seb derm which in reality makes me question the severity of there seb derm and whether or not they even had it in the first place. It's really hard to discuss skin conditions without seeing photos of ones skin. A lot of times the people who find 'cures' suffer from body dismorphic disorder and didn't really have serious symptoms to begin with. Example is Jeff on the forum i linked, that dude had a huge spiel about lamisil curing seb derm and his photos were a joke the dude basically had nothing wrong with his skin. I'd just like to let people who truly suffer from seb derm to be wary of posts of people who find cures so easily. Check out the two stickied threads in the forum i posted to start your journey and post with us over there.
It would be great to have a forum dedicated to seb derm but at the moment there doesn't appear to be one. So lets make the most out of the Roscea Forums sub forum 'similar and co-existing conditions forum'. It seems to be the most lively place for seb derm discussion.
Cheers

@ Jon66: Your attitude displayed in the above quote is enough for me to never want to visit the forum you linked in your posts. Trust me I had Seb Derm for decades, cured it and I did not have any form of body dismorphic disorder and I'm sure the same can be said of others on here who have got their condition under control.
^ Your post pissed me off so i responded as such but i'm editing it now. Anyways I'm glad you found a solution to your seb derm after having suffered from it for decades. Do you still think that the brewers yeast was a help? it does seem kinda contradictory to the yeast free approach many including yourself advocate. Just so i'm clear the main things that 'cured' (i like the word remission) you of seb derm were chlorine filters, baking soda (face and hair wash), and an anti-candida diet with appropriate supplements? If you have a thread you could guide me to that would be much appreciated. When i see the word 'cure' i get upset because from my experience well over 75% of the time if the poster provides pics i'm left shaking my head at how little they were effected in the first place.
@jon66: Yeah I saw the post before you edited it. I felt your initial post to be somewhat derogatory of this whole thread. Okay, it's a big thread and takes ages to trawl through it but we are trying to help each other out that's all, no biggie. I joined here to share my experience in dealing with this scourge of an affliction and I have spent hours on here trying to help people out even after I believe I have cleared my condition. I know what it's like to live with Jon, it ruined my life for close to thirty years and can leave you desperate and trying many miracle cures that work for a few days, giving you false hope, then the condition reappears with a vengeance.
'Clearing' my seb derm took a massive amount of research and trial and error. 99% of the things I tried over the years resulted in massive failure and left me with little hope
so it led me to totally change my lifestyle for a time in order to get on top of it. I firmly believe that Seb Derm is connected to a candida overgrowth/gut flora imbalance. Please read about it online, more than I could type here. It just makes sense that it's being more and more linked to candida now. So after trying countless 'miracle, cures, steroid creams and shampoos, wonder oils and potions I finally decided to change my unhealthy diet. It's common knowledge that nothing will help a bad skin condition like a good diet.
So lets see if we can help you Jon, I sincerely hope so. Okay so here are the main steps I believe I took that helped me shift the SD.
1. Anti Candida diet. Please check up on these online. I stuck to the diet for months upon months, takes some willpower believe me but seeing my skin start to clear gradually whilst on it was more than enough incentive.
2 Whilst on the diet I drank only mineral water, nothing else.
3 I ditched the SD creams and shampoos. Those were only aggravating it. Foaming ages like Sulfates in shampoos are cheap and nasty ingredients and even used in labs as skin irritants. Not good for SD believe me.. I wash hair only with bicarbonate of soda, this stuff clears dandruff like nothing I've ever seen. I started washing face with it too for first few months using only TINY amount on wet face, leaving 2-3 mins before rinsing thoroughly. I no longer use bicarb on face, only thing I wash face with is cold-lukewarm water. Filtered water is best.
4 I took antifungal supplements. You can use any of the well known ones like Coconut oil (pure) Oil of Oregano, Garlic, Caprylic acid (in coconut oil but more concentrated) Pau D'Arco, etc. Lots of antifungal supplements out there but important to rotate them so as candida will not build resistance to them. Rotate every 3-4 days worked for me. IE Monday to Thursday I took Garlic, Friday to Monday took Coconut oil, Tuesday to Friday Pau D'Arco etc etc. I found that working with 4 different antifungals in rotation worked best for me and I did vary them.
5 Supplements that worked for me were Flaxseed oil, Zinc and Antihistamine. I took the brewers yeast and got massive hit of B vitamins which gave my skin a huge boost but was only a stop gap procedure it turns out and was never gonna be a cure. B vitamins are great for skin and a good B complex will benefit one. If not B Complex go for B2, B6 and B12 and Biotin.
6 Probiotics are needed to restore healthy gut balance. Work well when used with prebiotics which you can get from eating plenty of veg. Acidophilus Lactobacilius very beneficial.
It is worth bearing in mind that people who go on detox/candida diets etc can experience die off symptoms (Herxheimer reaction). This may lead to temporary worsening of condition but is temporary and an indication that things are working.
I had pretty aggressive SD on sebum rich areas of face, sides of nose, cheeks and chin as well as scalp. I couldn't go outdoors for weeks on end. Very agressive rash and no mistaking it, was easily diagnosed by several GP's. Rash was always present but worsened considerably on high sugar, coffee, junk food, white bread intake. Coincidentally all the foods you are supposed to avoid when on anti-candida diet exacerbated my SD like you wouldn't believe. As soon as I changed my diet and avoided those foods my skin started clearing up. Trust me it was no overnight miracle cure, took trial and error but my skin is clear now and has been for ages. GP who I have seen twice over last few months on unrelated matter (migraines) has said he can see no signs of it at all. I had terrible flaking on face in my teenage years but was able to beat that a long time ago. Flaking on scalp/dandruff did remain but cleared that with the steps I have outlined. I have NO redness and NO flaking of scalp. My skin was in a terrible state but IS clear now and has been clear for a long time. Am I cured??? I believe so. I have reintroduced some of the things I thought I would have to avoid for ever and no adverse reaction. I have no desire to go back to unhealhty lifestyle and the other healh benefits aside from SD are well worth it.
I hope this has answered some of your questions Jon. I had no miracle cure for anyone on here but a strict regime/lifestyle change that has benefitted me wonderfully.
You may or may not want to try the steps out but I hope you do, it's possible to clear your skin up but it takes willpower. Keep a positive mental approach to it as well, that helped me. Try to remain as stress free as you can, get a proper nights sleep, sunlight and exercise.
Does this look like SD to you guys? I've been battling this thing since last september. It went away this summer but now it's back [Edited image out]
Went to a dermatologist who prescribed me a new steroid called travocort which made it 5x more worse. Didn't have the red lines under my eyes before using it. Plus everything is redder. It happens every time I get prescribed steroids. I've tried elocon and fucicort before - both made it worse after first use.
I suspect that my skin is really sensitive from the use of benzoyl peroxide years ago.. I don't know what to do. Should I continue with travocort even though it made it redder?
The breakout usually starts with my skin flaking. As the skin peels away it gets really red and starts to flake again. Not sure what's going on with what I have under my eyes.
I've had a flaky scalp and eyebrows before, so the dermatologist told me it's probably SD. BUT WHY DO STEROIDS MAKE IT WORSE?
IS THIS SD? The flaky patches are next to my nose. Red patches under my eyes appeared after the use of travocort (corticosteroid).

moonset, what do you think about leaky gut? It seems like it could be related to or even caused by Candida. I'm wondering if that could be my problem since I have some other symptoms... mainly pain in my right hip that comes and goes.
I went on a Paleo diet (which seems pretty similar to the candida diet). I saw pretty good results with the rash, had a lot more energy (I didn't realize it, but I think I had chronic fatigue), and my digestion problems went away. Still having the pain in my right hip that comes and goes. I have done just a bit of cheating here and there and it seems like my rash it just starting to come back out. How long does it normally take yours to reappear after eating something you shouldn't have? It was about 5-6 days after cheating that I noticed my rash starting to come back.
Also, how do you feel about popcorn popped in olive oil? OK or not?
Hey all, i was diagnosed with sd in 2007 since then I've been using elidel and fucidin h cream.. Had cleared up completely but recently 2 weeks back i had applied fucidin h cream on my pimples, as I was getting late and was in hurry I just wiped the cream with a tissue but still I saw a lil redness so I rubbed ice cubes on my cheeks and I just forgot to wash my face after that I let my face dry say abt 20 mins then went for a shower.. My cheeks are all pinkish red and it also burns.. Wtf what should I do now?
@Ferb:
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that candida and leaky gut go hand in hand and
I certainly have read up a good bit on leaky gut syndrome. I'm pretty sure that the chronic
fatigue that you mentioned is another symptom of both conditions. I definitely make sure that
I chew my food properly these days.
I have had no recurrence of skin rashes even after gradually reintroducing some of the ones
that could potentially trigger an outbreak. When dealing with these conditions I think it's
important to stick to the regime as best you can. It's all to easy to give into temptation and
give yourself a reward from time to time and break the protocol of the diet. When this
happens you may feel you are winning the battle but in reality you are losing the war.
I'm afraid I can't be of any help on the popcorn thing as I never touch it.
The link below does make for an interesting read:
Am I making my SD worse or better? I started using nizoral and AHA on my cheeks twice a day. The spots have gone much redder, but they no longer flake. That's probably because AHA and nizoral both eat the flakes.. I don't know whether I should continue this regimen or not. I think I am making it worse?
