Would I see better results with the baking soda if i dilute it with ACV? I've only rubbed it in with water for the past week but still find myself peeling off the scales from my scalp.

The properties of shampoos and ingredients in food all contribute to the problem.

So what about toothpaste and mouthwash? Couldn't these also have a negative impact on our skin?

What other safer alternatives are recommended? I'm also wondering the same for shaving creams/oils.

Vanicream & Free & Clear Cleanser a no go for me.

Tried Vanicream lotion light it was very heavy and within two days I had a huge break out on my forehead. Also the Free & Clear Cleanser was extremely drying and made my skin extremely itchy within one day of using it.

As for shampoos I'm in the same boat as you guys everything makes my scalp itchy and leaves a build up. I tried Giovanni Shampoo and Conditioner last week I used it for two days in a row, it didn't leave me itchy but it dried my hair out to the point it felt like straw. I went back to using Pureology for the last week to restore my hair but I can only use Pureology for so long before it starts to build up on my scalp.

As for cleansers I just ordered Elta MD Foaming Facial Cleanser it's new and doesn't contain sulphates or Glycerin. Just make sure you get the Foaming Cleanser not the regular one. The other one contains glycerin and Sulphate I believe... it may be both or just one but at the moment I forget! Anyways no guarantees it will work but I was so impressed with the Elta MD UV clear sunscreen that I thought trying their new cleanser wouldn't hurt!

The search continues!

Clearsil also makes an adult acne cream with sulfur. This is supposed to be for on the spot acne treatment, but I just use it wherever I regularly get SD and it stays away...I don't have any problems as long as I use it every day. From pictures I've seen, my SD is pretty mild...just red and scaly...so I don't know how will this would work for someone with severe acne. I've recently decided to try a sulfur soap instead of the clearasil and will let you know if this is as effective for me.

i've had SD on my face for a month now. last week i finally went to my derm because nothing else was working. he prescribed nizoral cream. i know i've only been using it for about a week, but i'm still anxious about my results. for a couple days it was starting to peel off, but last night it came back full-blown and i'm getting really depressed because i finally cleared my skin up recently and i thought i wouldn't have to deal with this "feeling-too-ugly-to-leave-the-house" nonsense anymore. from what i can tell the peeling helps but as my skin is sensitive i don't want to use any harsh potions to induce peeling.

my doc said i could go back and see him if the nizoral cream didn't work within two weeks, and i'm glad he's willing to help me combat this aggressively, but i've done some googling and i'm getting scared because i'm hearing these horror stories of people having to deal with the same SD patch for years.

i'm currently using nizoral and pine tar soap and also taking acidophilus, biotin, zinc, and vitamin c. anyone else know something i can do? i heard that washing your face with head and shoulders and leaving the lather on for a few minutes helps?

I have seborrheic dermatitis also. I've tried many things incl coal tar and salicylic acid. The only thing that has worked for me is sulfur. Right now I'm using Dr. Joesoef's 10% sulfur soap and it's working miracles. I use this for my face and back. No more crazy itching and my face has cleared up. I also have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp and for that I use African black soap with some drops of tea tree oil. For conditioner, I use 50/50 apple cider vinegar/water. These things are working better than anything I've ever used before (including prescription medicines). For moisturizer, I use 100% unrefined shea butter for body, face and hair. I've switched to all natural skin/face/hair products and it as worked. I'll never go back to chemical products again.

If you google for Dr. Joesoef's soap, you can e-mail them for a free sample sized soap. Their sample is pretty big and lasts a long time.

If someone has SD how do you know when it's slowing healing? I've been using a sulfur wash for about a 3 weeks and my acne has improved and the "flaky, scales" seem to be coming off slowly. And they aren't coming back in those areas.

When it starts to heal does it shed kinda like a snake? And then new skin is underneath?

Just curious. Does anyone here used Nizoral shampoo as a facial cleanser for flakes? If you do, how was the result?

What about use of topical retinoids, such as differin and retin-a, on areas of the face afflicted with seb derm? Has anyone ever tried this?

From what I remember Nizoral contains sulfate, which based on the posts in this thread could be further detrimental to SD. It certainly didn't solve my problems when I was using it. At the very least Nizoral was able to loosen up my flakes but I have stopped using it and all other shmpoos since digging into this thread. It looks like there are articles attributing sulfate with hair loss as well.

I believe I have this too. Please someone let me know how it can go into remission. I went to a derm for a year and a half and gave me all kind of creams including steroids such as desonide, cultivate, topicort. Told me every thing from rosacea, sd, contact dermatitis. Hell he didn't even know. My face flared all the time and never went away. Few months ago 2nd derm(family friend) said I didn't have rosacea but maybe sd. Old derm had done a fungal test before I fired him. Called and said I tested positive. Went to he new derm- family friend and did fungus test - it came back negative. My point is this. Figure on your own. These derm get paid eveytime you flare and go back in. I'm hoping someone can answer questions for me. If sd is hereditary what can you do to get it? I believe I got it from usage of creamsa and steroids over time. Also is it possible I have steroid induced rosa ea? Does anyone have experience with his that can help me see I I have it. Also if i am negative on fungal culture, can it be as since it's fungus related?I told my family derm that my goal is trying to find out what I have and I am committed to it. Please for all suffers get to the bottom of this with help online. You could ruin yourself using doctor medicine. We All need to talk to each other about symptoms and determine ourselves. If someone can answer my questions above, I wil apreciate it. Thanks

Maybe it's a combination of the sulfur and the supplements you are taking. With this condition I don't think it possible to treat it topically and have it clear for good. I believe that seb derm needs to be fought internally and truly believe that it is caused/related to a candida infection of the gut so will be helped greatly by a healthy diet and by consumption of anti fungal supplements foods. I really hope your condition is improving and you can get on top of this affliction.

Eat as many raw vegetables as you can, broccoli, spinach, kale, radishes, red peppers. Your diet should be made up of at least 60% raw veg. Avoid carrots and beets for a few weeks but you can introduce them gradually. Avoid all breads, cakes, sugars and go for a low card diet. I drink mineral water only and lots of it. Also look into making your own Sauerkraut, this is great for restoring healthy guy flora. Don't buy Sauerkraut from the Supermarket, that's been processed and will do no good whatsoever. Kefir is great too, you can buy it pretty easily (Google it). You will also need to take a good course of probiotics.

You want to start then fighting the candida in your gut. Keep a large tumbler of water that has been mixed with bicarbonate of soda, 2-3 teaspoons, in your fridge and sip at it regularly through the day. You can then fight the candida by using the following supplements: Garlic, Coconut Oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Pau D'Arco, Olive Leaf Extract, Apple Cider Vinegar. Try to buy in at least 3 or 4 of those supplements and rotate them i.e you should use one at a time for a 4 or 5 day period and then move to the next. This will ensure that the candida will not build up a resistance to the supplements.

You have to treat Seb Derm internally, creams and lotions will only give you temporary relief and the seb derm will always come back. I am convinced it's caused by candida in the gut. Doctors and Dermatologists were useless in helping me. They'll give you a nasty steroid cream and send you on your way, they told me it isn't related to diet which is just ridiculous. When I was younger and used to eat lots of junk food my seb derm would flare out of control, it used to be so bad, anything I ate that you are supposed to avoid in trying to get rid of candida affected my seb derm massively. It can't be a coincidence. Trust me I lived with this affliction for decades and I know what exacerbated it. Doctors are jack off all trades but masters of none!! They have a set guideline of treatments and advice that they have to stick to and they won't deviate from that. Everytime I tried to speak to or get my point across to a doctor was an exercise in futility, they told me it was incurable and that I would just have to deal with it. Wrong!!!! I cured my seb derm and my skin is crystal clear now!!!

Also, reccomend me a good probiotic.

Yes, it does matter what type of water you drink. I drink only bottled mineral water. That would be best. Never drink water straight from the tap, too much chlorine in it, if you must drink tap water then invest in a good water filter jug.

Probiotic: Check out Syntol

I only had Seb Derm.

No, no enlarged pores, never suffered from those. I believe my seb derm was caused by taking antibiotics as a child, either that or dental amalgams, maybe a combination of both. Both of those are linked to causing an overgrowth of candida. I first got Seb Derm when I was 8 or 9 years old and had it all of my life.

Candida is a hard thing to shift and takes a lot of willpower. You can read lots of info online about anti-Candida diets. Check out the supplements I have mentioned too. If you clear the candida you can start introducing foods back into your diet slowly and gradually, nobody could stick to the anti-candida diet all their life. Decades of applying creams and 'miracle' cures topically did nothing for me, in fact many of them had an adverse effect. Best thing I ever did was to totally clean up my diet and address what I believe to be an internal candida problem. I also learned to leave seb derm rashes well alone, less is more when it comes to that issue. Using all manner of chemicals on your skin and scalp will only make the problem worse. Internal treatment is the key to getting rid of the problem. Too many people give up on a course of treatment after only a few days or weeks and will end up getting nowhere. Remember yeasts/fungal infections are hard to kill off so you must be patient.

Moonset,

I could not agree more. I believe putting these topicals including steroid on my face screwed me up. I don't believe in the temporary fix. I want the permanent one. I stop all topicals including protopic cultivate topicort end feb. But did use antifungal for a month - stupid me. For a month only aveeno on my face. Face still pink and a rash can be seen if you are closeup. I have been trying alot of carrot tomato cucumber to build my biotin up for my face. I am going to try cutting sugars out for now. I have a few questions:

1) how long will I be on this diet and how will I know candida is hone for good before I stop the diet. 2) do you know about steroid induced dermatitis or induced rosacea and are they similar to sd

3) how do you make good sauerkraut

Thanks

Yeah most of the things I was prescribed made my rash a lot of worse, even the things that did work only did so for a short time but the SD easily built up a resistance to it then came back with a vengeance. I ditched all things like Nizoral, Protopic etc ages ago and my skin started clearing up immediately. I wash hair and scalp with Baking Soda only (not baking powder) and use tiny, tiny amount with tepid water for face. I have stopped using all products with parabens and sulphates too, those only make SD worse. I have heard about steroid induced rosacea/dermatitis but know little apart from the fact that long term use of steroids on the face is real bad.

You need to go on a good diet for several months and really stick to it. Google search will let you know all the vegetables that can be eaten raw, cut out all breads/sugars/fried food/ etc. Tea and coffee have to go as well as alcohol. I eat salads/raw veg every day, have gotten used to it now and my diet will stay that way from now on. Only way you will be able to tell if candida is clear is to gradually introduce foods back into diet one at a time, if you get SD flaring up then it's not clear. Everyone is different so be patient with it, nothing miraculous will happen overnight. We all should be eating better diets full time and not just to fight SD.

You can find good tutorials on making Sauerkraut on youtube. Kefir is worth looking into as well.

Other things to read up on are Probitics/Restoring Healthy Gut Flora, Candida diet, Liver Flush, Colon Cleanse, Dangers of Chemicals/Sulphates on the skin.

Hi Moonset,

In your post of february you mentioned your skin to be almost crystel clear 99%.

In your last post you mention your skin is Crystel clear.

What is the difference in treatment lately ? Or did you had some good sun exposure..

Do you still exfoliate during the shower with the baking soda?

thanks
