Hey all so heres the story.
Been suffering from acne since 13. Went on accutane several times in my teens but never finished a full cycle. Last time i used it was mayne 19 or 20. Then switched to topical clindamycin lotion.
Every single time i used accutane it was amazing. Used super high dose 80mg and 40mg alternating even though i only weighed 130lbs at the time. It worked amazingly well and totally gave me my confidence back. Only side effect was dry lips
In my early 20s i got cut off accutane after maybe the 6 or 7th mini cycle cuz i failed to do the semi weekly bloodwork. Got referred to a different derm and he put me on topical clindamyin with alcohol solution. I used a cap full over face nightly. It worked very well. I used it for 10 years. It stopped working so well after several years and doc said to continue using it. Later i stopped using it totally. When i quit the clin i was in my early 30s or late 20s and my acne wasnt that bad but i would get little white heads all around my chin and i had very oily skin. I found out i had gram negative folliculitis due to longterm clindamycin use. It was confirmed by culture which derm didnt wanna do but i pushed him to do it and so he did. I got put on accutane as thats the only thing that will cure it.
Heres where it goes real wrong. I was on a 40mg per day dose and i weighed 190lbs. A few weeks in, i had the worst muscle soreness and joint pain but i soldiered thru and completed the cycle. I never got dry lips at all which was weird. I just had incredibly painful joints and bones which lasted months and months. My heels were incredibly painful esp if i sit for a while or sleep then get out of bed.
A few months after i still got those white heads on chin and skim still very oily. Derm agreed to put me on low dose accutane to control the oily skin. 10mg a day. I made it to 2 weeks and again incredibly painful joints and bones. I had to stop.
I tried again months later and again 10mg gave me painful joints and muscles. So i stopped for good. But the pain never went away. It improved but its still there in spine, chest, sternum, heels, elbows.
I feel like this is permanent.
A week ago i bought now brand vitamin a 25,000 iu as i heard people with acne had improvements. I dont have much acne at all just really oily skin and im trying to control it with the vitamin a. A few pills in and once again the sternum and spine and joints have started hurting bad again.
It seems my body is rejecting high doses of vitamin a and even low doses of accutane.
I dont know how to reverse this pain and live pain free. Maybe a detox? Anyone have any ideas or supplements i can take to help the pain and reverse the side effects??
Thank you
First of all, don't megadose on vitamin A! It's fat soluble and you could really mess yourself up. Stop doing that immediately.
As far as the joint stuff goes, mine were awful when I was on accutane. I felt like an old man at 20 years old. And mine have never quite been the same since. I've always felt older than I am joint-wise. Accutane is hardcore and can change the body permanently.
On a positive note, my joints did improve after accutane and I lead a normal life and all that, but I do often wonder how I'd feel had I not done accutane.
