edited: i have decided not to take accutane, the risk isnt worth it for me. i will go for doxycycline probably.
I have mild(to moderate) acne.(am 17 years old male) Today i was prescribed at the derm 20mg/day (supposed to be jumped to 40mg after a month) but i am very afraid, everybody says that this pill is very harsh and should be only used for severe acne . When i said that and was asked why is it that bad, i didnt know what to say... my main question is why is it so bad ? should i just take Minocycline instead?(the acne affects me psychologically terribly, im litteraly depressed)
Thankyou
Hey man, I feel you 'cause I was in the same situation only one year ago.
My acne wasn't severe but f*cking persistant and It made me so self conscious. My dermatologist prescribed to me Accutane (also because i've tried EVERYTHING).
I took 20mg daily x 4 month and 30mg daily for the last one x 63kg (so it was a low dosage course). I didn't experience lots of side effects (it's important to say that we are ALL different so don't think that the experience of someone will be the same of yours)but be prepared to DRYNESS (especially of lips) = drink a lot of water and moisturize lips and face (as I think your dermatologist said to u).
i didn't experience a huge breakout and my skin was clear in 1/2 month (except for the red marks) with occasionaly pimples til the 4 month. The greatest thing was that my face didn't became oily anymore (and I had a REALLY oily face). After my course i stayed clear since 1 month ago, when acne comes back but SO different than before accutane: skin isn't oily and i don't have many spots but I work in the Theatre so i have to stay clear... This is the reason why i'll start a 2nd course with a very low doaage (just 10mg daily x 3 months)
Accutane was good for me? Yes, it changed my life (and hope this course will definitely destroy this monster) but you have to stay in a good mood in order to don't be anxious and don't look at you in the mirror to see how It is working: you have to be patient.
Good luck bud! (If u have more question, ask me without any prob)

No permanent side effects.
I mean that things at the beginning can be bad (Initial breakout, dryness) and everyone has a different way to respond to It and maybe results won't be notable soon, but when they arrives it's so amazing!
Hey! my accutane course resembles yours. 20mg first month and 40mg for the rest. I'm about a week in and I still haven't experienced much side effects. So.. yeah, I can't speak for everyone who had a bad experience on accutane, but I'm going into the treatment with a positive mindset and i'm just hoping it'll stay that way. People say its bad because they experience health problems after that are not reversible or they feel that the medication heavily affected their mental wellbeing. I'm sure if you google accutane horror stories there are a lot. But I guess this is why its important to do YOUR OWN research and think about whether the treatment will outweigh the horrible side effects.
anyways, I think its cool that we are starting around the same time with the same mgs! I have a forum post of my accutane journey that i'll be continuing to post if you want to know how its going so far

Hey! i havent started yet, probably will never start actually. My mild acne hurts me SEVERELY psychologically-wise, but i still do not believe the risk is worth it(permanent side effects). I might go on Minocycline but currently afraid of that as well because it can also cause some shit... you can understand im pretty nervous i that matter. Hope it will turn out good for you, and would to hear further from you.
Yes take minocycline instead. Accutane will mess your body up and you might regret it the rest of your life. If you dont have SEVERE acne you shall not take accutane, cuz it's poision. I would advice you to stop taking it, and start using topical retinoids insted. It works the same as accutane, but topical, isn't it better? the same effects without the side effects.
