After trying several anti-acne treatments with no results, in July 2015 I started taking spironolactone (50 mg slowly increaslng the dose to 100 mg); after 2 months I stopped having period at all. As I assumed it was a result of inhibiting my hormones, I continued taking same dose till April 2017 (-my skin condition changed a lot, it was a huge relief..). I decided to taper off Spironolactone April this year, because I was worried about my health and fertility. After 2 months on 50 mg of Spiro I finally got my period (I also checked levels of my hormones and they were still very low). Since then (June 2017) I was menstruating once per 2 weeks, unfortunately I started breaking out as well..3 weeks ago I decided to increase my dose to 87,5mg. I know it may have been irresponsible, but having acne was so overwhelming I decided to pay any price to keep it away I feel trapped and hopeless, I do not want to harm myself but also don't know what to do- Spiro helped my skin so much like nothing did. I wonder if inhibiting hormones for a longer time can cause permanent demage? Or they will unblock when coming off medicine anytime? I was thinking about taking Spiro till planning to get pregnant, but of course I would not like to risk. Any help appreciated!
If I were you I would definitely stay on the spiro if it worked so good for you.. it's out of your system completely after 24 hours and have never heard of it causing long term damage.. As acne medications go it's considered very mild:)
