Some quick background about my acne story: I am 22 years old and have struggled with moderate cystic acne since i was about 15 years old. I have been seeing a dermatologist who prescribed me Accutane 3 times over the past 6 years; a 6-month, 3-month, and another 3-month duration respectively. Each time the acne would be "cured" and then flare up again about a year or so after treatment.
The issue: Today I visited a new dermatologist who thinks that my previous dermatologist had "under-prescribed" me, and it is his opinion that I should do a 16-month course of Accutane in order to get the correct cumulative dose of medication.
Although I have only experienced mild side effects from Accutane before (dry skin/lips, sun sensitivity, flaking). I am concerned about other potential side effects particularly mental health (anxiety/depression).
16 months is obviously a long time to deal with side effects however I have tried pretty much every alternatives (topical creams, antibiotics, supplements etc) and am not sure what else to do as the acne seriously effects my self-esteem and confidence. I find myself not wanting to see people or go out because of my bad skin.
Is itworth taking the risk to finally fix my acne or should I try something different? Does anyone have experience with Accutane or a similar situation?
I appreciate any feedback or suggestions, please help!
Hi Logan, 3 month courses do seem a bit short, even for a 2nd course, normally you'd do a course for at least 5 or 6 months.
Would you consider doing low-dose Accutane indefinitely as maintenance? People who relapse after Accutane normally benefit from a low dose course..ie, 20 mg once or twice a week for years.. It keeps Accutane at bay and side effects are almost non-existant.. Might be worth speaking to your derm about this, as this treatment method has become very popular
