Spironolactone - feeling hopeless

Hey everyone. I'm not really going to explain my skin history/situation in detail because at this point I'm just so over telling my story in depth. Basically my skin sucks. I've suffered with extremely severe cystic acne for years now and it's ruined my life in many ways. Nothing topical really helps.

I'm currently on spironolactone, tomorrow going up to 100mg twice a day. It's only been three weeks (50mg morning and night on week one, 50mg morning and 100mg a night on week two). I know I'm probably just being ridiculous and impatient but I am so over my skin ruining so many good things for me. I'm only getting older and skin generally gets worse with age, so I'm just wasting my youth having the ugliest skin ever.

The first week on 100mg a day, I actually kind of think my breakouts let up. I had two minor flare ups vs my usual one breakout a day. I thought it was starting to get better, but within the last week I've had four severe breakouts and it's honestly killing my excitement about this. I literally do this every time with every treatment I try. I think it's working and then it just doesn't.

A lot of people say good things about spironolactone, but for those of you with specifically cystic acne who've had success with spironolactone how long did it take to see results? I know it's different for everyone, but my dermatologist said this is my last resort before accutane, but I'm supposed to go in next month and I don't really think there's been any actual improvement.

Not only are my breakouts gross as hell, but my skin texture has been absolutely awful and my pores look bigger since starting spironolactone. And yes I've been drinking plenty of water, so I don't think me being dehydrated is the cause of this.

Like I said I know I'm being ridiculous about this but I'm just so mad at my skin and all I can do is cry about it. Any sort of encouragement would be great.

Hi DesperateVegan,

I've been on both Accutane and spironolactone. I didn't see consistentresults on spiro until I was on it a good 6-7 months but it did work wonders in the end. My skin got softer, more glowy, smaller breakoutsafter maybe 3 or 4 months but became consistently clear after 6 or 7 months &I used it in combination with retin-a .25, I think they work great together as retin-a keeps the pores clear and the spiro keeps the oil production down. Don't despair I know how frustrating/upsetting acne can be, trust me I've been going through it for years but give the spiro time, it's an extremely slow process & I've heard some people say it took them a full year to see consistent results on it:)
