I am a 19 year old girl who has went from having the basic t-zone purberty pimples to one of the most severe cases of cystic my dermotogolist has ever seen. (dont go tanning in the sun with a topical - lesson learned the hard way that ended up with boils of severe cysts and inflammation)
Throughout my years of acne I have tried everything from topicals, oral antibiotics, natural remedies, diet changes, chemical peels, cortisone shots, birth control, and even a course of accutane. Accutane brought me to 95% clear skin which I was satisfied with but when I stopped my birth control, my cystic acne came back horribly. Now my derm believes it is hormonal acne so she recommended I give spiro a try. I am a week in on spiro at 50 mg per day and back on birth control. My forehead is completely clear, my cystic acne is mostly on my lower cheeks and the sides of my mouth.
Any opinions on spiro or if this could finally be the thing that helps me. starting to lose hope in ever having clear skin.
Hey! I'm in a similar situation, and am currently on spironolactone. I have severe cystic acne and spiro is my last resort before accutane. I've been on it for three weeks and I'm feeling impatient, and not seeing any major results yet. I'm not on my full dose yet though. I'm moving up to 200mg a day tomorrow. The breakouts I do get don't stay active very long or get as big as they used to, but I'm still breaking out at the moment. After reading a lot about spiro, what I know about it is that you mainly have to give it time. It sucks trying to be patient, but if your breakouts are hormonal, which it seems like because hormonal cystic breakouts tend to be on the lower half of the face, it could keep you clear if you stay on it and it'd definitely be worth it. If this medication does work for you, it could take months to see the full effect but most people really start to prove within the first three months. Good luck! I'm hoping spiro works for me too.
Hi guys! I never had cystic acne or anything as severe, but I did try spironolactone at one point. I keep a log of everything so here's what my notes say:
Started Spironolactone on 7/11/16
Upped dosage 10/6/16 (did not see any results after these 3 months in)
Dermatologist appointment 12/29/16 to check results. Skin had gotten somewhat better but had a breakout right before this appointment and was already on max dosage of spiro so we discussed "Accutane". Needed blood-work and a negative pregnancy test one month before starting Accutane, so appointment was made soon after. Then I waited the month for my next appointment, and I believe I was still on spironolactone up until the day of my appointment.
In the meantime, my skin cleared up and I have been acne free since before even starting Accutane. Ten days until I'll be off my 5 month Accutane course. Still acne free but just get flesh colored bumps after a few months in. Was more clear before starting and during the first two months haha (but that's another story). Nothing noticeable though. Now scars from picking, that's my problem. So don't pick your faces ever is my advice; you'll regret it!
Hope this helps!
I agree that it would seem like you'd need to stick with spiro for awhile to see results. However, there's a chance you'd start breaking out again after stopping the medication so just keep that in mind.
