Hi guys,

Im currently on my third month of roaccutane and im taking 40mg daily. My journey hasnt been the easiest so far. I feel my anxiety has worsened and my mood has changed. I find i have a lack of motivation and this led me to leave uni. Im generally a very big stress pot and i dont think roaccutane helped with that. I decided to leave uni and postpone it to focus on clearing my skin as it has always been a big insecurity of mine and after trying several types of antibiotics and different types of prescription meds and topical treatmenta i was starting to give up. My acne has always made me feel insecure and has had a major knock on effect on my self confidence. However long story short (kudos to you if you've made it this far! Lol) My diet hasnt been great whilst starting roaccutane. I stopped eating chocolate a year ago however ever since starting roaccutane as a form of stress relief ive been eating chocolate again, i find chocolate makes me feel happy as wierd as that may sound. However my chocolate cravings only seem to increase as the day goes by (*sigh*). I feel like im eating excessive amounts of chocolate and feel like it will hinder the overall outcome. I wanted to know will this mean i'll get acne again after my treatment because of my poor diet?. And any tips on how to stop eating chocolate all together?!. I really just feel so fed up.

Thank you

roaccutane is not recommended. Look at repairing long term damage from accutane. It destroys your life!!

Hi hatetane, I noticed you commenting on alot of threads and dont know your personal story so sorry if I speak out of turn....dont want to offend in anyway.

Ihope you dont mind me saying I agree its very important to do research and understand the treatment but I would have to respectfully say there is 2 sides to every argument and for many it "saves lives"....I'm not pro or against roaccutane (accutane) and can only speak from experience. I took roaccutane 7-8 years ago and just finished a low dose treatment and would have to say it works and helps alot of people. It's important to understand the possible side effects but you/we all must understand that many who have used this treatment and seen the great improvements it has on their way of life, dont jump on forums to say how great it is. You always more likely to hear of the bad experiences. Every situation is different and every treatment is different. I've used this treatment twice over a 8-9 year period and it has helped me greatly both times. I'm in my 40's and struggled with my skin for 25years and its that struggle that made me depressed and want to shut myself away from the world. Taking roaccutane works and can help alot of people and I'm just not sure posting how dangerous it is and it will "destroy your life" on every thread will help. If anything its going to cause more stress and worry to those already struggling with anxiety and depression issues. Again, I'm sincere when I say, I'm so sorry to read some of the stories and the problems some people have had while taking roaccutane, really terrible but to make blanket comments to people that it "destroys your life" is untrue and not fair to those that it can really help. It's important people know and understand the drug and very important they read, do the research and ask for advice but for every truly sad experience, there is a very postive one and that shouldnt be forgotten. kind regards

Hi MxN96,

Having a good/healthy diet is important and eating lots of chocolate isnt going to help but also wouldnt have a long term affect on treatment but make sure you drink lots of water every day and take tablets with food. It is also very important, that if you feel your anxiety/moods have changed, since starting treatment, that you speak to your doctor and discuss this with them. Depression can be a side affect that some experience while on treatment so its important to tell your doctor so they can monitor it. take care and best wishes with treatment.

The truth of the matter is that accutane destroys many peoples lives. So it never destroyed you life - lucky you. Are you male or female?
So here is my question to you - if you had a 15 year old son who had acne, would you allow him to take accutane knowing that it might make him impotent. That is would take away his well-being and lower his standard of life permanently?
The proclaimed miracle drug i was told about does not exist. I was told by several doctors that the claims of accuatne suicide had never been proven and that many kids commit suicide for for many reasons including having acne. What I wasn't told is that this drug messes with you head and can cause psychotic behaviour and suicide - this has been proven no matter how many doctors and pharmaceutical companies deny it.
Try speaking to the parents of lost kids or to the everyday sufferers from this toxic drug. I speak from experience and can assure you that we are not all crack-pots looking to blame accutane for all our life problems.
So for every negative there is a positive! Roll of a dice! Dermatologist give this drug to young kids and they are not informed of the life destroying side effects. In fact they are told to ignore everything they read in the packet because the pharmaceutical companies have to list every possible side effect to cover themselves. By the way erectile dysfunction and no libido are not listed as a side effect!!!!!
Your in your 40's and can do what-ever-the-hell- you-like but dermatologists should not be giving this drug to teenagers.

Hi hatetane,

Thank you for your reply. lucky you? Clearly you have alot of anger and seem to be directing that anger at others and I'm so sorry you feel that way. I never once thought you were a "crack-pot" and didnt say anything of the sort in my reply and I was not trying to be disrespectful towards your views, just trying to give a truthful balance, as people dont just need to know the negative but also the positives, to make an informed decision. Everyone has a view on this subject which is as important as the next person. Yes, I am male and as a parent I would take responsibility to whether or not I allowed my teenagers to take this treatment. Personally, I feel the teenage years are hard enough without starting a treatment that could cause depression etc. If its a person under 18 then I agree, a parent needs to take an active role in the treatment. The side effects are real but also only effect a small % of people who take the treatment. Would I allow my teenager to take this treatment? It would depend on the situation but I would not rule it out completely because of what side effects "might" happen. As a parent(yes, I have teenagers) I would weigh up the pros and cons and monitor closely the treatment and if I had any concerns would stop treatment. I was asked how I feel at every consultation. My Derm spoke about suicide/depression issues at "every" meeting.

Again, I dont know the full picture of your situation but in my view (only going off your comments above) your anger should be directed at the Doctors/Dermatologists for not giving you all the information you needed to make an informed decision and not at the drug, that can help alot of people.

This is just my very respectful opinion,

Kind regards

Hi MxN96,
So since you are taking Accutane/Roaccutane, we should address your concerns...first the easy one. Chocolate. Your body may be craving the chocolate. It actually has high levels of tryptophan in it.
*Your body is always striving to achieve a healthy balance, it does want to repair itself! Please remember that, even in your acne struggles.
First thing you could do is to go to your local drugstore and find some
5-htp. It's an amino acid sold in the vitamin aisle. It will help with the depression somewhat.
The next thing you should do is tell your doctor you are experiencing notable depression so that they can monitor you and determine the severity. It is a very common side effect. The doctor may have a prescription they can offer to help that, or may need to adjust your dosage.
Keep in mind, this is only temporary...all of it will pass with time and will soon be a memory of stuff you went through way back when...
Hang in there and keep us posted on what happens!

Yes, I am angry at the doctor and the dermatologist for not giving me the full information but the pharmaceutical company doesn't list lasting ED, impotence, diminished seretonin, as side effects so you think that is ok?
It was only two years ago that these side effects were listed on propecia/finasteride packets and still it doesn't mention that it may be permanent.
The doctor who discovered accutane aknowledges that this drug should not be used because of the side effects but he was shut down by the pharmaceutical company. Did you know that in the original trials 30% of men claimed ED but the pharmaceuticle company covered this up.
Try researching!! I have

Hi hatetane,

Out of respect to the OP and their original questions, I dont want to carry this discussion on in this thread, just wanted to try and give a balance as we must understand that many others have a positive story to tell and on forums like this, where young and old and people from many different backgrounds and situations will come to read, its important they get a full picture of the pros and cons when using accutane. You are doing a great job in letting people know the risks but people also need to know the positives, as only then can they have a clear picture of all the facts before starting treatment. Your anger comes across in the way you type, as if you almost resentful at people that had a good experience during treatment and that doesnt help you or those that are open to listening to your views.

Truly sorry for your struggles since treatment and wish you all the very best in your recovery and hope things improve,

Kind regards

I don't need you to tell me about my anger thanks. People don't need you to tell them how great accutane is, they have doctors to lie to them about that. Everyone who is offered accutane needs to know how bad the side effects can be - it's as simple as that. Yes they may have a good experience but if they don't, they have to realise that they can't turn the clock back.
https://healthimpactnews.com/2012/popular-acne-drug-is-one-of-the-most-dangerous-drugs-ever-made/

So you see - it's not about balance - it's about knowing that the side effects can be permanent!!!!!

hatetane, you seem to think I disagree with you, I dont....in fact I agree with you on many things but "only" wanting people to hear the negative is like telling half a story..there is many, many thousands/millions of people that this has helped and is still helping. Is it wrong to talk about the people's lives that this has saved? ....arent their voices just as important? I feel it should be "all" about balance and most importantly - the truth, whether that truth is negative OR positive.

I not here to say how great treatment is and not here to spread lies or scare people about the negatives, thats the doctors job!...I'm replying to give balance and tell the truth from my and many others experience...people have the right to also know the positives it can bring and only then can they decide if those risks are worth it..its not for you or I to tell people whether its worth the risk or not.

I respect your views greatly and wish no one had to use drugs like accutane but thats not always how it works.

I'm sure people are now getting bored by our discussion so lets just agree, to disagree and move on...wish you all the very best...

The quotes (below) are just a few of 100's taken from this website. They are not lies, whether you want to believe them or not. They are real people. (and yes, I could also add many negative and very sad/upsetting quotes as well but again, its about the whole truth(negative and positive) and I just believe people should atleast be given the chance to know there is 2 sides to every coin and for every article of warning posted(thanks for the link), there is thousands/millions across the world that this has helped.

"Accutane changed my life in a positive way"

"good luck to anyone on accutane!! my only regret is that i didnt take it sooner"

"It's truly been a wonderful gift to me in my life and I have lived the last 13 years as a popular, happy, strong young man through high school and at my university because of how outgoing it enabled me to be. Main regret is not taking it sooner"

"I thank God for this drug and that I was able to take it. Nothing else I've used has been comparable, and I would urge anyone suffering as I did to at least consider trying it"

"I absolutely loved my experience with Accutane"

Your still missing the point - all the side effects are not listed in the packet nor does it say that the side effects can be life altering(adversly) and permanent. So you took it 13 years ago and you wish you had taken it sooner? Why on earth would you be discussing a medication which you took 13 years ago and had a good experience with - that does not make sense!
Are you married now with children?

Hi hatetane......Those quotes were not mine, as I said above, they were just a very small sample(out of 100s) of accutane users that have posted on this website about their very positive experience of treatment. I have had two low dose courses of treatment myself over the past 8 years, which is the only reason why I follow this website. I copied those quotes from accutane users, just to give balance to the 2012 article link you posted and to show there is 2 sides to every story........All I'm doing is acknowledging the fact that it is a very serious drug but also that it can have very positive results for the majority of people that complete treatment.

As I've now said a number of times, I understand and agree with the point you are making. If the main issue is the fact that some of the possible side effects are not listed or not made clear enough for people to make an informed decision before starting treatment, then I would agree completely, everyone deserves to know "every" possible side effect no matter how likely/unlikely.... by not making it clear, is wrong!

The last thing I'm going to say on the subject....

My whole issue in this debate wasnt with your opinion/views, as I completely agree with where you are coming from....it was the scaremongering type posts ("it destroys your life") on a number of threads. Sharing your experience is a good thing but I believe "we" dont have the right to make statements like that to anyone , when you dont know a person's situation! Every treatment, situation and person is different and unique. Many visit this site for advice/support/reassurance and directing statements like above to people, as if its fact/certainty is unhelpful and untrue, as many of these side effects are unlikely to effect the majority of users....I respect your views and sorry if my opinion has upset you....I appreciate this is a very sensitive subject...

As we are just going round and round in circles now, I wont keep replying, as I didnt mean to take over thread but have appreciated you sharing your thoughts on the subject.

thank you
