PLEASE HELP: Low dose Accutane

Hi All,

Please could someone give alittle advice. I've been taking low dose of 20mg a day for just over a year. My Derm and I agreed a low dose over a longer period was the best way to go and for the first 10+ months my skin has been great and very little breakouts and oily skin very much improved. Over the summer it got very hot/humid and it caused a few breakouts so my derm agreed that if needed I could take an extra 20mg every couple of days to give my skin a little extra help when it was very humid. As we are now heading into the winter months and no longer need to protect my skin against those humid days, I've dropped back to my 20mg a day as normal but starting to get alot of breakouts. For 10+ month, accutane worked amazing and I'm back taking the same level each day but cant seem to stop these breakouts.

Should I up the amount to the 40mg a day all the time or keep taking the 20mg that worked so well for so long? I've been having the breakouts for a few months now so would really appreciate if someone could help.

Could the jump up to taking 40mg some days have caused the new breakout?

Many thanks for any help

Im thinking the jump caused the problem, and I would try to stick with 20mg
I was on 20mg for 2 weeks and had ZERO breakouts I jumped to 40 than 60 and broke out the entire time on tane
I wish I stuck with the 20mg
at this point, I would stick with 20 until you reach your max dosage
I dont think increasing will help
just my .02

Hi kim,

Really appreciate you taking time to reply, it really helps to get someone else's view on things. I Started to think I was an expert at this after taking accutane for over 12months but sadly I was wrong! Skin was great for most of that time but noticed it became more oily over the summer and Derm said to up the dose..Skin been worse since.......Think your right, will stick with the 20mg that was working so well.

Do you know how long it normally takes to settle back down? (I was only taking the higher dose on and off for a month or two)

My Derm isnt working to "max dosage" as she felt my dose was so low, I could keep taking it until I feel comfortable stopping the treatment.

Hope you dont mind me asking, how long did it take for your breakouts to settle down after making the jump to 40mg-60mg? I've been sticking with 20mg this past week but skin still feels more oily than before I upped the dose...

Thankyou again for your replies
