Quick question: I want to post a photo album for others to visually see my experience, but is the best way of doing it here in the forums or the gallery? I don't need to make a member blog to do it, right?
So to provide some context, I took isotretinoin/Accutane (specifically the brand Zenatane) for 6 months from July to December last year. Even though I weigh 45 kg/100 lb, I was prescribed60mg a month since 40 seemed too low and 80 was too high. At the time I started, I was suffering from persistent mild acne and painful big cysts on my chin, but during the course of Accutane my face completely erupted into severe acne until the very end. I actually made a rather desperate post here during my worst point because I was at a loss for what to do. When I was "finished" with Accutane, my skin was left with angry red pigmentation and thick, scarred tissue deep into my skin (keloids?) that wouldn't go away, so I had to get around 7 cortisone shots to the face to reduce them. Afterwards I was prescribed tropical tretinoin to continue treating my skin for some months, but I still saw no improvements in the end, and I just simply called it quits because I was tired of spending so much money on prescriptions.
Basically long story short, Accutane didn't work for me. It brought my face to the same condition it was when I started it, BUT with the added bonus of the red pigmentation and scars left over from the treatment. And of course, maybe some depression due to the physical and mental pain I had to endure the whole time. Hate to sound jaded and salty about this, but since I essentially lost at this gamble, I want to know if there's even another option left for me or if I should just accept my fate of being stuck with acne for the rest of my life.
In terms of what I've taken for acne, I have tried:
- salicylic acid
- MANY various antibiotics, topical and oral (full list on my profile)
- benzoyl peroxide
- retinoids
- hormonal diuretics
- birth control
- Accutane
- immunosupressants (yes, it was so bad during Accutane that I had to be puton a combinationof immunosuppressants and antibiotics...)
- various skin care productsmarketed online like alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid (do these even work?)
What I have not tried:
- all natural treatments such as fish oil, etc.
- diet changes
- homeopathy/acupuncture
- ???
- The Regimen (I will be amazed if this actually works after all that I've tried so far)
So if anyone has any other piece of wisdom/advice to offer, I'd be glad to hear. Sorry if the bitterness is leaking all over this post, as I am still struggling to accept the disillusionment and the harsh reality of my how tenacious my acne is. When even the multiple doctors and dermatologists you've seen are puzzled by the fact that Accutane didn't work for you and don't know what to do next, you know it's pretty sad. I guess I'm just posting this mainly as a reminder that this treatment is not for everyone, and absolutely doesn't work for everyone.
As of right now, I'm currently dealing with a bumpy forehead and cheeks full of pimples, blackheads and open comedones. They're so pervasive and protrusive I can literally scratch off the comedones (ew). My skin's also as oily as ever, which is NOT helping. But I suppose even Accutane can't overhaul 10 years of acne and oily skin.Perhaps it's simply genetics...?\_()_/
