I've suffered with acne since being 14 and tried all manner of different drugs on NHS, when I got to 22 and was still suffering I went private and was put on a combination of the contraceptive pill and spiralactone, unfortunately this didn't work for me so now at 26 I've finally started roaccutane. I started an initial dose of 30mg a day yesterday for 4 weeks with a view to then increase this once my dermatologist is comfortable I haven't experienced any extreme side effects.
Day 2 and the only side effects to report so far is dull persistent headaches, sore nose and slightly dry eyes. Just wondering what everyone experienced in terms of side effects in first few weeks and if anyone had any hints of tips for me?
I am on day 2 of accutane as well, I am also taking 30 mg a day for 4 weeks and I havent had any side effects at all except my lips a little dry so far but I am also on a very low dosage for my height and weight so It might just take me longer. But I can tell it is working because I now wake up with a dry face and It is never oily anymore.
I had a similar experience, have been suffering with acne for years and it started to flare up more last year, NHS subscribed me a number of different topical and antibiotic tablets, none of which agreed with me.
My GP was sceptical to put me on roaccutane due to my history of mental illness but I got referred to hospital dermatologist the and have now been on it for nearly 2 months.
This is what I have experienced so far, starting on 20mg for 2 weeks, then onto 40mg for the rest:
Dry eyes - This was bad for the first few weeks as I struggled to work having to stare at a computer all day, I bought eye drops in the pharmacist to rectify this. They are not so back now at week 7 and I no longer require the drops.
Dry lips - Expect this to get worse, your lips will feel like someone has extracted all the moisture from them. Carmex is the best solution for this, I have a tube for work, a tube for my car, another for home, and another for my car. This may seem excessive but you seriously miss it if you don't any!
Dry nose -The skin inside my nostrils is now very dry, which means I constantly have bloody crusts inside my nose. I am going to ask my doctor about this next time I go for a check up for my roaccutane.
Muscle ache - I found for the first 4 or 5 weeks I had seriously bad muscle ache after exercise and was unable to go to the gym as often. There is not really a remedy for this apart from letting your body rest. I have started swimming once a week now as I find it is easier way to exercise when your muscles ache. This is now not so bad at week 7.
Hand/arm rash- In the last couple of weeks I have developed a rash on my hands and arms, it is mostly small circular dry raised patches on my arms and small raised bumps on my hands. I have to apply moisturiser several times a day. I have purchased some hydrous oitment cream to use at night only as it's pretty heavy duty and too oily to use in the day.
Tearfulness - As I said before I have a history of mental illness, mostly depression and anxiety. The first few weeks I did feel alot more emotional. This has subsided some what, perhaps because I am able to exercise more again due the muscle aching subsiding slightly. Other than that I am a bit more tearful than normal but not feeling horribly depressed.
Some products I would recommend:
Hydrous oitment BP - great for very dry sensitive skin as it has no parfum in it but is very oily so only use at night
Cetaphil cleansing lotion - great for washing your face as it is very gentle, once again no parfum
Cetaphil moisturising lotion - I use this to moisturise my face as it's not greasy and absorbs easily.
Dove Pure & Sensitive Hypoallergenic Beauty Cream Bar- I've just started using this to wash my body, has no scent and is very moisturising
Carmex - but get the squeezy tube cos as it's not very hygienic dunking your finger in a pot and putting it on your lips!
Green PeopleIrritated Scalp Shampoo (and conditioner)- I get a dry itchy scalp and this is the best shampoo I have ever used, it is quite expensive for shampoo but you hardly have to use any.
So this may seem like a lot of negatives, but bottom line my skin looks amazing. I've had two spots in the last month after an inital minor breakout. I have found when I do get spots they heal much faster as my skin isn't oily.
I know there are alot of negative posts about the long effects of roaccutane, but for me personally the pros are currently outweighing the cons.
Thank you so much for replying back. It's nice to know someone else who is going through similar side effects. I'm just finishing week 4 on my low dose, due back to the consultants on Friday in order to up my dosage.
I wouldnt say that my skin is clear but it's definitely less inflamed I'm hoping when my dosage is upped this week I will start to notice the clear skin more so.
I was was very similar to you so far in that as quick as some side effects were starting, they were leaving. For example the dry eyes I mentioned in my first post doesn't seem to be an issue now whereby this last week or so I've been suffering with really sore gums.
I hope the feeling of tearfulness has subsided for you, just focus on the positives and how great your skin is looking which if your anything like me is a massive positive and a huge confidence boost, all my friends at work have noticed my confidence rise and I'm hoping it will only get better.
Keep in touch
