Hey guys, so I've had acne ever since the age of 13, and some were cystic, I've been trying several medications for 3 years, now I am 16 and my face has some scars and quite a lot of acne. My dermatologist prescribed me with Accutane. I got the packet and it says its only 10MG, once a day for 10 days, then go to 2 pills of the 10mg pill... I really think this is low dosage and I really want results quicker, will this affect my face and acne? When will I see a difference since it is such a low MG... thanks guys.

Hey man,
I'm fifteen and I understand what you're going through. I personally started out with 40mg but I can relate to the acne and the struggles that come with it. I don't know your weight so I couldn't say if it's too low of a dose to really do much. But if you have cystic acne I would imagine your derm would have at least started you at 40mg, as I had moderate/severe acne with moderately low amounts of cystic acne. You'll get results no matter what but I've come to the realization that you honestly have to push for your dosage to be upped. As I said before, you may be extremely low in weight, as this is a weight dependent dosing medication. But starting at 10mg seems unheard of for me. I would try to get your parent(s) involved and explain their concerns and if the dermatologist/physician doesn't budge in upping it I suggest getting a new derm. It isn't that hard to switch your accutane provider, you'll have to do it manually after you got a new one if it gets to that point via the IPLEDGE website. But as I said, if you happen to be low in weight you don't want to push your limits with this medication. It's not like minocycline or any antibiotic for that matter. Personally I think the dosage should be higher, even if you weighed 80-100 pounds. You'll get there man, it just takes some patience. I'm on my fourth month and I experienced breakouts and whatnot at first. Best of luck, and reply if you need me to answer any questions!

Thanks for the detailed response man, I weigh about 52kg and we just consulted with the derm, he says that it's best to start off slow in order to get less of a breakout during the first few weeks and to get my system used to the drug before getting a higher dosage. I have 2 months worth of 10mg pills, so after that I'l; have to see if I need a higher MG than what I already have. Btw stay confident with the acne stuff, it'll be over soon all we got to do is stay strong! 🙂

Thanks, you too! I'm seeing good results so far, just stupid post-inflammatory pigmentation. I suppose your derm is correct, but you're going to have breakouts either way. If your derm doesn't up you after your first month I suggest insisting they do, or switching! Your goal is to get upwards of 60mg a day if you want to see permanent results. Also, your derm first off shouldn't be giving you more medication than a months worth, seems a bit off. Anyways, for sure give it time, it takes awhile to kick in but you'll notice right away that you're drying up! I have great tips to help you with that if you want, just tell me if you do! Good luck
