Hello everybody.

I just started accutane yesterday and will be taking my secon pill today. I have quite bad acne and spots as you can see in the picture and it really has a bad effect on my confidence (If I even have that anymore...) I just feel like it's so bad that there is no way that anything can make it better and I'm probably overreacting, but it really brings me down. I just have that thought in my head of "what if it doesn't work" and I feel that there is nothing for me to do and I have to live with acne for the rest of my life. I'm not depressed, but I am very conscious about myself because of it.
I need some moral support honestly and my doctor guaranteed me that it WILL work and I just hope he's right.

When will I begin to see results from the medication and what can I expect?
I also have quite a lot of red spots as you can see and was wondering if accutane also helped with that?

Anyway.. thanks for listening.

Hey Sebastian,

You may think that your acne is bad, but I can honestly tell you, your acne is mild. I don't mean to make you feel bad for feeling bad, just trying to put it into perspective. Most people would never look at you and notice it.

Dont go down the rabbit hole of, what ifs. Accutane will work, it just takes time. You will get clear. You might have a bad breakout before, but judging by your face now, it will probably be minor. Just stay patient and don't play this story out before it unfolds. You're just worrying to worry.

Listen to your doctor and just be patient, it will happen.

You're right, I worry a bit too much.. I guess i'm just impatient.

Is it really mild? I've always seen myself as moderate and even my derm told me I had a lot of acne, I don't know though after what you said.

Anyway, thanks for the reply!

It seems like the majority of your acne is along whete your stubble grows. Do you use a blade? If so that's definately irritation/ingrowns/razor bumps.

while you're on accutane please change to a good electric razor (i use braun) and honestly it's reduced all of my jaw/sideburn acne which was infact irritation

Ahh okay, yeah right now I don't use an electric razor, but maybe I should try one.

Thank you

Hey man. My derm told me to start out slow with my treatment, so I'm currently on 20mg but will increase to 40mg after 2 weeks.
And good luck to you! :)

Accutane is a miracle drug for acne. My acne was more severe than yours. Had it for 20yrs right into my 30s. Took it like for 6 or 8 months and I never have any more breakout in the last 10 yrs. I wished I had taken it earlier because the damn thing left scars on my face. But I think there is a side affect. Hair loss and maybe some other side affect I don't know of. Starting with 20mg didn't do much but when reaching 40mg to 60mg it miraculously start working. I don't know if I went over 60mg.

I dont even know how ur doctor gave u accutane, but what you have us just small papules.
Accutane fixes cysts, and since you dont have any, it might not be as effective. THERE IS NO CURE FOR PIMPLES!!!
Anyway, by the 4th month you should see results if there is any. But you barely even have any acne so id rather not risk accutane and waste money.

I respectfully disagree with uncrowned. With the exception of hyperandrogenism (too much testosterone) in females, accutane is effective against all forms of acne. Based on the pictures, I think that you will have complete and probably permanent clearance. You might have a slight initial breakout but I bet you'll be acne free by month 3.
As far as the dark spots from old lesions (pigmentation), it goes away with time.
good luck

I would also disagree with Uncrowned. Accutane is for acne. It doesn't care what type of acne you have. It will eliminate it. You for sure we're a candidate for accutane. For sure.

Accutane will work, you might have a relaps after your treatment, but chances are you wont, and if you do it will be much less severe.

Thanks everybody for your replies!
It's been a week now and I already feel it starting to work. I got some pimples during the week but they disappeared waaaay faster than they usually do, so thats good. I've gotten dry lips but I use my lip balm regularly so I can control that.

Can't wait to see results after a few months! :)

Accutane has a very high success rate. I've been on these boards for about 13 years and have seen countless people have amazing results on it. There's no reason why you should be any different. Just hang in there!
