Im approaching the 6 month mark on Accutane, meaning I have been on it for 5 months and about to start the last month. I have seen no improvement! I dont know if it is because i started on a pretty low dose or if maybe I'm not taking it with enough fat? I only weigh around 115 pounds and i was on 40 mg for 3 months, then 60 mg for the 4th month, and then 80 mg for this 5th month. i plan on sticking with the 80 mg for the final month. Since I'm not clear yet, does that mean by the end of my course i will still have acne? I still get active spots all over my face and neck and unfortunately accutane has caused me to get numerous cysts around my jaw and cheeks which I have never had before treatment and they are still there. I get the normal side effects such as dry skin and lips, and i always take my pill with large meals. I don't know why it hasn't started working. Is there any hope? My skin looks the same as it did 5 months ago... maybe worse because i have cysts in places i have never gotten acne before.
I hopefully want to stay on accutane for a 7th or 8th month but is 8months dangerous? I also don't know if insurance covers treatment for longer than 6 months. Please let me know if you have had a similar experience.
I'm sorry for your troubles. A second course is pretty common but it's usually after a pause. Iknow insurance companies are a bunch of cut throats, so be prepared for anything. You should have a back up plan just in case. Tetracyclines have their limits but you could try other antibiotics like bactrim, which is rarely used but very effective. If you're a female, you can try hormone therapies.
I guess the doctor is gonna tell you what your options are.
good luck
Before the accutane I was using the Regimen for a whole entire year. It actually cleared my face and neck up very nicely and I only had one or two pimples at a time while using the Regimen! The reason I started accutane was for my back and chest because those areas were uncontrollable and i didnt have the time to cover those areas with benzoyl peroxide twice a day. Luckily, the accutane actually has cleared up my back and chest a bit (not completely but mostly). It was unfortunate that I couldn't use the benzoyl peroxide on my face during Accutane because my dermatologist said it might be too drying
Do you think using AHA with the accutane could help?
