After 5 days of being on Accutane at 50 mg I noticed crazy hair shedding, my hair was really thick and almost immediately the shafts became so thin and fragile, along with an itchy scalp. Any time I touch it, hair breaks and or falls out entirely. I stopped taking the drug 3 days after I first noticed the hair loss, it has been two days since I stopped the drug and it is still falling out. Will I lose all my hair or will the hair fall stop? Please help! Is there anything I can do to stop the hair fall, I mean, I was only on it for a week!
I am not sure if your still taking Accutane or still loosing hair. It can cause TE. hormone disruptions, low iron etc. TE usually can last up to 6 to a year and for some they have cycles of hair shedding for years.I'd tell you to stop taking it and try other ways to fight your acne that are safer.
You can also read a long thread on the hair loss thread. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/topic/152239-the-answers-i-got-from-my-doctor-about-hair-loss/#entry292238
Good Luck
Thanks for your response! I stopped taking the Accutane after five days.It has been three months and I am still losing scalp and eyebrow hair, I am heartbroken and desperate. I am only 17 and this is my second episode of hair loss in two and a half years. The first was from severe anorexia nervosa and the majority of my butt-length blondehair fell out for a month. It regrew, but it never got to where it was before it fell out again from the Accutane. I feel like my recovery was worthless and I want to die, I just want to feel okay again. I don't understand why it is still falling out, especially my eyebrows. My scalp is itchy and inflamed, I just want this to stop and get on with my life. If anyone has experienced recovery please let me know.
I have seen twophysicians, and it is a difficult situation because of my past mental illness. My GP and my dermsaid that it may be due to anxiety/stress, but I have been much more stressed out before and never lost a single hair.Again,it began falling outjust a few days after starting Accutane (my eyebrows started a week after that). Anyways we had my blood tested just incase, my thyroid came back completely normal along with my protein and liver enzymes (I am a vegan so I am extra careful about getting all my nutrients). My iron was a little low, so I started taking Ferrous Glucinate (which i've been taking for the past two months) and 5000 Biotin. There's no difference in my hair, I usually have a period of 3-4 days where I lose between 35-50 hairs and then periods of upwards 100. It's torturous because I feel like i'm getting better then WHAM, crazy hair fall again. My scalp feels less itchy but it is still pretty awful, it is so dry. My eyebrows are dry and itchy too, but it is all diffuse loss. I have a GP appointment scheduled for the 15th, so I will ask for another round of bloodwork to check again/ take a closer look. Are there any other hormones, componentsthat could cause this? I want another dermatologist, one who can give me better treatment options and actually listen. I feel like I have alopecia areata (diffuse) brought upon by the accutane. My heart is broken and I hate my life, this drug ruined whatever life I had worked so hard to get back. I just want this nightmare to end before I try to end it all myself.

Get Andreas Moritz' 2012 book on liver flushing. Good luck
get a colon cleanse!!!! The same thing happened to me and it was because the accutane was still stuck in my colon and disrupting everything. Also, take Himalaya liver cleanse vitamins, they are the best to clear out the rest of the accutane still stuck in your liver. Lastly, it is very common to become anemic because of an accutane trial and this can lead to further hair thinning, so try to take some supplements with iron. These steps completely stopped my hair loss and my hair slowly but surely came back to the thickness it was before accutane. Also take some biotin, this will help the hair growth. TRUST ME, do these things and your hair will go back
Sorry to hear your situation...! Is it hair loss or breakage of strands, since there is a difference. The fact that this started 5 days after you started accutane probably isnt too convincing to the providers that accutane is the culprit; this is on top of it being an issue that you had in the past. It may have been a condition that was building up and coincidentally exacerbated when you took accutane. You also mentioned its dry and itchy. Although you can itch with alopecia areata, it could also be fungal in nature. And in that case, it could be trichomycosis, which should be easy to treat with antifungals... Just something your doctors may not have considered.
