Hey Guys! So long story short - I don't have health insurance and I convinced my gyno to let my try 50mg of spironolactone for my acne that has become worse. I saw him today (I brought research findings about spiro and hormonal acne with me) and he agreed that things are out of control and is concerned. My acne right now is mostly concentrated along my jawline, cheeks, upper neck, and cheek bones (hormonal locations). My testerone was tested years back and was slightly high, the doc took some more blood today and is going to check my testosterone and my prolactin. He didn't think the slightly raised T was affecting my skin, but now is seeing that my body could be very sensitive to that.
I've also had irregular periods ever since puberty (like completely unpredictable, months between periods, no cycle at all)... but now I've been on the pill so long that they're non existent.
Anyway, this site has helped me so much over the years (this is actually my first post but I've been lurking for a while) that I wanted to share my journey on here with anyone else that is struggling and needs hope. Because believe me, I understand how hard it is to live like this.. my acne is almost severe and I've never had a clear day in my life since age 11 or 12 (I'm 22 now). I'm miserable. Hoping that this spiro is my saving grace, because I have tried EVERYTHING besides accutane (which wouldn't even help since its most definitely hormonal).
I'm going to log my experience with the drug on here. I'll be starting tonight. Feel free to ask questions, I would love to help anyone that I can.
Good Luck! I'm on 50 mg to and just over a week in. My acne is not severe but definitely not mild either. It sucks! Hopefully we'll both see progress.
Good Luck
how are you doing with it?
**One week update
Ok, so I've been on 50mg of spiro for one week. So far so good. I was dealing with a really bad breakout before I started (around 20 spots along my jaw, cheeks, and upper neck)... things have definitely calmed down. my make up is going on a lot smoother, which tells me that the overall quality of my skin is improving. As for the initial breakout - I'm not sure since my breakouts were already pretty bad. If anything, it's just bringing small spots and whiteheads to the surface. But it's hard to tell since it's so early. it's possible that this could just be the cycle of my skin (I would say my skin right now is how it would
be on a GOOD day before I started spiro). my deep
spots are definitely shrinking and on their way out the door, and I don't think I've gotten any new ones (again, hard to keep track of since I had so many spots and scars to begin with).
I don't want to get my hopes up just yet, but so far I think things are absolutely looking positive. I may still experience a delayed initial break out, who knows. I'm in better spirits, though.
side effects I've experience are increased fatigue (I'm usually tired anyway, but it feels like more), some stomach uneasiness and nausea but nothing unbearable.
I'm following up with my OB/GYN a week from today, so I will report back after that as to what he says about my progress and if he ups my dosage
I'm on 100 mg a day. Stay with it. I got off of it briefly because I ran out and wasn't able to get back to the doc...horrible mistake. Cystic acne flared up within that month. So I reckon I'll never be able to get off it. Oh well, as long as it continues to keep the cystic acne at bay, so be it.
Good Luck! I'm on 50 mg to and just over a week in. My acne is not severe but definitely not mild either. It sucks! Hopefully we'll both see progress.

Good for you Hun! Definitely stay encouraged as that is half the battle right there. Do you have a picture of your skin. I could share mine as well through PM. My acne is pretty much all over but the most /worse of it is on my chin and around my mouth and jaw area. My problem at the moment is mostly pus filled red bumps, some underground ones and a cyst here and there. Spiro has definitely not helped my skin and it seems to have worsened things somewhat but from what I read, it happens. My breakouts don't ever seem to go away...like ever.
Anyway, keep us posted. It's great to have someone else on board this journey,

Your skin could just be purging, so don't get discouraged! We both need to see this through for a few months.
I have been documenting my skin with pictures. I could send them to you (once I figure out how to do that hahah), but the thing is- I have SO much scarring and it's kinda hard to tell the progress of my actual active spots when most of my face is filled with hyperpigmentation.
I wanted to mention that I had an anxiety attack last night. I've always had mild anxiety, but haven't had an attack like that in a good while... and usually something would trigger it, like a social setting. I was laying in bed on my phone when all of a sudden I started feeling anxious. Then, I started to have a full blown anxiety attack! It took like 5 minutes to calm myself and then I was fine. Soo bizarre. I'm not sure if I can attribute this to the spiro (I had taken my dose like 11 hours earlier), but I thought maybe it was useful to mention. It was very weird, I was literally just chilling and all of a sudden started feeling funky.

Ok so I wanted to post back here again.
I'm experiencing some heart palpitations, and I hear spiro can cause them. I read online that dehydration can cause palpitations, so I'm just let going to be mindful of drinking more water (I haven't really been doing that.. oops). The palpitations are really creeping me out, though!
Leelowe have you experience anything like this?
You can contribute the recent developement of irregularities to your heart rhythm from Spironolactone's interaction with the natural regulation of hormones in our RAAS axis or Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System. Spiro is a known potassium sparring diuretic that can eventually lead to undesirable concentrations of K within our body. This can lead to an increase in blood pressure.
This all stems from spiro displaying inhibitory actions to aldosterone's role. Aldosterone is a hormone that causes the kindey's tubules to increase it's absorption of sodium and water back into the circulating blood (generally responsible for excessive water retention) and promoting the excretion of excess potassium. Disruption of this regulation is what causes your symptoms.
I'd suggest speaking with your physician as soon as possible to discuss your options in controlling this issue.
Ok so I'm reporting back with an update (still trying to get ahold of this site so please don't mind my random quoting)
My doctor appointment got moved to yesterday, so I wanted to wait to see what he had to say before I reported back. I told him about the palpitations and was a little taken back by it... he checked my electrolytes and I got a call today that everything is good. after doing some research, my conclusion is that I must have been peeing out a lot of salt and not replenishing it, so my electrolytes (potassium, salt) became out of balance since spiro is making me hold onto potassium and excrete salt (I'm not a doctor so don't take my word on this, but I really do think that's what's going on). I've read about people increasing their salt intake while on spiro for this reason. So I really do think that the imbalance of electrolytes was messing with my heart, So, I'm just trying to be aware of my salt intake (I've read of people adding pink Himalayan salt to their water) and probabaly will start incorporating some gatoraid. all while drinking a lot of water and staying hydrated. I haven't had any heart related symptoms anymore so far, but we shall see what happens.
I'm an anxious person by nature, so I think that my anxiety exasperated my concerns and made me feel as if things were worse than they actually were. I don't know about that for sure, but I will be continuing to monitor how I feel with the increased salt intake.
Otherwise, things are going good. I'm glad that I think I figured out the whole deal with the heart symptoms, because I really didn't want to stop taking spiro since i really think that it will eventually work to clear my skin.
No significant changes to report yet about my skin, but I am very hopeful.
