Hey guys! Im a new user here. After spending months researching about Accutane, I will be starting in a few days at 60mg (20mg three times a day) and I'm a 120lbs. I now mild/moderate persistent acne with some cystic spots on my face for about 8 years now and moderate acne on my back/arms, with the occasional breakout on the chest. I'm a little worried because though my derm prescribed 60mg based on my weight, I'm scared it might be too much? I have also been on birth control, doxycline and minocycline (twice each), tried prednisone for a week and bactrim for a week as well as many topical treatments such as Tretinoin, Differin, Tazorac, and Aczone. As of now, my routine is simply using a Neutrogena acne face wash and using aloe vera & BP at night. I think what bothers me the most is the hyperpigmentation scarring (i'm an african american female) and the persistent acne as it really does take a toll on my self esteem. I would honestly appreciate it if anyone has any advice on whether or not 60mg is too much and if they experienced hair loss ( my hair is permed). Also, does accutane help with hyperpigmentation scarring? And how bad is the IB for those of you have been on many different kinds of treatment prior to accutane as I have? Thank you in advance <3

Hmmm.....Your story is so similar to mine.....I live in the UK though, black girl in my late 20's. I've been on Roaccutane for 3 weeks now but in the Uk they tend to start at a dose that corresponds to half your weight. So I'm 68Kg and I was started on 30mg with the view of doubling this 4weeks after starting. They do this in order to check blood lipids, kidney and liver function haven't been affected and also to give you time to get used to the side effects which I started getting 10days into the treatment. Maybe you could look at the Dermatology guidelines or recommendation in the US to see if starting on 60 is standard protocol there. It would be interesting to hear how you get on...... All the best!

The thing with accutane is that the effect it has on your body will be unique to YOU. Some people experience hair loss, some people don't. Some people have the IB some people don't. You just have to take it for yourself and see how it affects you. I did the same dosage as you when I was 180lbs and 150 lbs. if you're worried, start taking only 40 mg. if you are all that concerned, talk to your derm. I assume that you've tried all other options so if this is a last resort, you may just need to suck up the fear and just do it.

Good Luck!

Everyone seems to have a much different reactions to accutane. Im half mexican half white. I did notice it helped with scarring. It definitely faded them, but the scars on my face are not deep pitted. My back has a ton of scarring and not deep pitted but much worse scarring than my face. It helped fade them to some degree, but the scars on my back I feel are there forever as I have tried every fade cream and been on accutane three times and just started a fourth round at age 36 and nothing has made them disappear. I weigh 120lbs and the doctor started me at 40mg which I thought was high for the first month. The first time I went on it they started me on a much lower dose, but I believe it was to see how my body would react. My derms were actually very good and asking me and checking with me each month when they wanted to raise the dosage. If I felt I could handle it or if I felt better staying at the dose based on the side effects I was having or if it needed to be lowered due to severe negative side effects, which luckily I some how never experienced the horrible side effects some people have had and described on this site. I was extremely tired when I first started at 40mg this time which i don't remember feeling until I was almost done with my course in precious years, but for me that lasted about a week and now I just have the side effects of dry chapped lips and the tiredness as subsided. Good luck!
