Okay so I'm a teenager and I started minocycline for my moderate acne around 6 months ago, along with duac. My skin wasn't too bad, I didn't get any cysts I don't think, but a lot of the normal pimples and white heads. Minocycline made my acne go away very fast, so atm I have perfectly clear skin, apart from hyper pigmentation. I didn't know about the damage antibiotics did to you until recently, so my dorm and I decided it was best to go off the antibiotics now. All I've heard is horror stories about stopping antibiotics, especially this one. So I decided to create this topic to see if anybody else stopped antibiotics without the huge severe breakout and also so you can see if I'm successful in not having the huge severe breakout. I'm going to slowly ween off of them. One a day instead of two a day for about two weeks and then one every other day for two weeks and then one every three days for two weeks until I just stop them for good. I'm also going to start taking a probiotic soon, so I can get more of the good bacteria in me. Also I'm still going to use the duac, that stuff is a miracle worker for my skin, so hopefully that will help too. I'm also going to try to limit my dairy and carb intake, even though I won't be able to tell if thats doing anything for a while because at the moment I have clear skin. I want to lose some weight and become healthier anyways though, so even if it doesn't do anything for my acne, it's still a good lifestyle change. Please reply if you have any more suggestions to not get the severe breakout.

it's definitely a good idea to start probiotics. renew life brand has really good ones, i used to take renew life ultimate flora 50 billion but it's pretty strong. you should definitely cut out dairy and try to limit sugar and processed foods. that will definitely help your acne. i've never heard of acne coming back worse after stopping antibiotics, i would assume that you might just go back to how you were before you started, or it will be better. i don't think it will be worse than ever, i've never had that happen to me!

Thank you! Have you taken antibiotics for acne before? I'm going to pick up some pro biotics from the store tomorrow (-: I don't know if I can cut out dairy completely, though I am trying. I'm a picky vegetarian, so I live on cheese, but I am trying to cut back slowly. I will definitely start limiting sugar for special occasions only and probably cut processed foods out completely. Thank you again for the advice!

hey, yeah i took doxycycline for 4 months in 2013. it actually didn't really help my acne that much, but diet changes did. cutting out dairy and sugar made drastic improvements in my skin along with taking fish oil i know if i eat dairy now i definitely get a breakout so i really avoid it! trust me it was the hardest thing ever because i used to be the biggest cheese/ice cream/milk lover
I took two rounds of minocycline for three months each time. My acne cleared up beautifully and stayed away for 3 months afterwards, so I got about 5 months of clearance each time. Some people get longer.
My acne seemed more severe when it came back, but I don't think it actually was. I was just so attached to my clear skin it was hard to look at.
I'm on Accutane now. Minocycline seems like a waste of time now, because it seems like everyone's acne eventually comes back with it.
Now would be a perfect time for you to start the regimen!
Hello, I just started minocycline about a week ago, i was told to take 1 pill a day, however I have been taken two a day. I am now noticing a big difference in my acne, but I'm not quite sure if its the pills or the gel i was prescribed to take with it. Anyways, I have also cut dairy out of my diet, and I am trying to eat alot healthier, although at times it can be difficult. Anyways, atm I am looking forward to the future results of my skin, yet I hope to keep it through hydrating myself with lots of water, and eating healthier. I feel that when I am done my minocycline cycle, I can choose to keep my healthier lifestyle like you, because I'm sure diet plays a huge role. So, just like you, I am also planning to slowly cut down on the antibiotics and will also use probiotics after the minocycline is done to get good bacteria in me, but apparently it can also cause acne. I don't know to be honest, but I still think it should be necessary.
Anyways best of luck, I hope the both of us are successful and all of those that have to endure this same crappy thing known as "acne".
Hi, I will share my 2 cents..
I take 100mg twice per day, and the plan is to do so for 4 months, then 50mg twice per day until FOREVER.
It's ok to stay on the antibiotics for as long as they work, as long as one takes probiotics as well.
I will say that eliminating dairy from my diet has made a HUGE difference, even before I stared the antibiotics. There is no such thing as clean, hormone free milk, and acne is absolutely impacted by all those Baby Cow Hormones we have no need for.
I find that non-dairy alternatives are great, except for cultured coconut milk yogurt- that crap is nasty- and it has made a world of difference not only in the amount of acne I get, but the type as well. I don't get the big, deep, cystic masses that camp out for months anymore.
Accutane is not very effective in persons my age, and causes changes in all parts of the body that - for me- aren't worth the risk, Antibiotics aren't great, but given that I can manage the risk with probiotic supplements, these are the best choice for me. Good luck to you all!
If anyone was wondering, I stopped minocycline and was clear for like 8 months and then acne slowly started to come back, but it's not super bad! It's definitely not what it was before at least. Its just I get randomly breakouts like 4 big pimples but they go away and I can stay clear for a while!!
