Hi everyone,

I just went to the dermatologist for the very first time every today (I'm 26.) I've struggled with acne growing up, and I tend to develop cystic acne all over my chin. So it's hormonal.

To start fighting it better, my doctor prescribed me Doryx. I asked her point-blank if it was gonna mess with my birth control effectiveness, and she said no. Reading the Doryx literature online, though, paints a different story. I'd really love to have a straight answer on this. I don't rely on just HBC for contraception, my boyfriend and I also use condoms. But sometimes condoms break, things happen.. it's nice to have a backup method.

So... should I be concerned about how this is all going to affect me? Will Doryx be okay with my birth control? (I'm on Sprintec, a generic).

I was also prescribed a topical sulfur face cream... we'll see how that goes.

antibiotics can make birth control less effective so definitley make sure you use the condom for a backup method. i would also have the morning after pill on hand just in case the condom breaks. the morning after pill is not the abortion pill its just a high dose of the birth control pill. good luck to you!

Spoke to a pharmacist while I was getting a prescription filled for Doryx over the phone, and she said that this medication could reduce the effectiveness but that wasn't a 100% claim. But she said I should stay on the safe side and have a backup method. So, I guess that's what I always do anyway. But I'll probably be a lot more paranoid now for the next 4 months. Yikes.
