I know I am on the rare side for 'why are you on accutane?'. Most people have nodular acne, or rather extreme cases. My situation is that my face will not stop producing oil. For as long as I can remember (at least the last 10 years), I have had to CONSTANTLY wash my face (even if it was just with water), to get rid of the 'shine' from the oil on my face.
If I didn't wash my face, for even 3 hours, I could pat my face, with a common brown paper-towel from the bathroom, and it would look wet. As if I ran water on it. My Derms would try this and that (Benzalin, Bacterim, etc.), and they may have helped clear up any pimples that would break out, but nothing prevented the oil from being pumped to my face all the time.
Finally! A Derm heard my sob story and said if I wanted to try Accutane, then fine, she would prescribe it. I am about to start my 5th month. 4 complete. I was taking 40mg/day to start, and now I am on 80mg/day. It seems rather high when compared to other dosages I read about on here.
I SHOULD ALSO SAY THAT I AM TECHNICALLY ON ZENATANE BY DR. REDDY'S.
Haven't seen that particular drug discussed on here, but it's still isotretnoin. So...
Anyway, my question is... anyone else on Accutane for an over product oily face? I never hard "acne", but my face was just so oily! My face is very, very dry now and I really like it. I can go all day without having to wash it once! I only wash it at night before I go to bed. I will be on the drug, at 80mg a day, for another 6 weeks.
If you read all that, here's my ultimate question:
Has anyone been on the drug for my reason? And, if you were, did the oily face come back after you stopped? My whole post here is because I have a concern that, because I don't have acne, it will be hard to determine when I should stop taking the drug. How can I know? If I stop in 6 weeks, will it be too short?
Thank you for anyone who read this,
I'm a 46 yr old female and took Accutane 15 years ago for cystic acne. My acne wasn't severe but it was persistent and caused scarring.
I had great results but suddenly at 46, I began to have extremely oily skin and severe open comedones (blackheads) on my nose, that literally came back one day after being extracted!
I have a great derm who thought I did need another round of low dose Accutane, and possibly after that, a long-term, low dose to control the oil.
I'm post menopausal so birth defects are not an issue.
This is my 4th month and my skin looks amazing. Oil is down, my skin is thinner and fresh-looking.
Thank goodness for great Derms!
