Hiya.
I went to the GP yesterday for a checkup on my acne. Previously, I've been on two types of antibiotics however it hasn't been as successful as I hoped. My doctor said he wanted me to go on Roaccutane and he said he'd send me a letter with an appointment regarding the dermatologist.
My question is, how long will I have to receive the letter and how long do you think I'll have to wait for my appointment? I know it's longer because acne isn't considered that serious compared to leperacy and things, but I'd just like an estimate. I live in one of the smallest cities in the UK by the way and this is through the NHS (I don't know if this will influence the time.)
Also, the antibiotics I'm on right now are useful for making my acne less apparent, but I still get painful ones, blackheads (everywhere) and whiteheads a lot. Do you think the dermatologist would consider that it's actually worse than it looks without the antibiotics?
Thank you
Hi there
I'm currently in my 3rd month of accutane. My skin was at its worst last Christmas/new year I saw my GP within the first 2 weeks of January and my referral letter went out to the hospital. This is uk NHS. I was offered a choose and book system online I had the choice of 2 hospitals so I chose the one I work in (for ease of appointments) this involved going online to pick your own appointment slots. Sounds great but in reality there were no appointments I could "pick" I was allocated an appointment for the end of May. This was then cancelled and my appointment was then rearranged a further 2 times. I eventually saw the dermatologist at the end of July.
I hope this doesn't happen for you! I waited a very long time. But from reading the forums this is quite rare to wait so long.
In the time I waited my skin significantly improved ( it may have been due to some diet and lifestyle changes I made) I was worried I wouldn't be a candidate anymore. However I wasn't willing to give up as i had waited so long! The dermatologist agreed although my acne wasn't severe it was persistent that's where I am now.
I just thought I'd share my experience so far with you as you may be in for a wait. But I think once the referral has been made i doubt they would decide not to treat you unless you weren't suitable. Normally you get referred when other treatments are unsuccessful. I hope it works out for you!
Xx
Aw thank you for replying.
I went to the GP on Wednesday and got my letter this morning, My appointment is mid February which I'm happy about. I appreciate there's more important things such as cancerous moles which take priority and I still think the NHS is brilliant!
So do you think I should just tell the dermatologist that it is worse off the antibiotics? Part of me hopes it gets worse for February so that I can just get on with the strongest treatment.
Thank youuu
