Hi everybody. I'm a 17 year old male, and i just started on Accutane 2 weeks ago, or more specifically 16 days. I'm on 60mg/day and for the first week, it seemed to work perfectly. I got super dry as i was warned about, and my back started hurting as well, but i didn't mind this as i saw it as signs of the drug working. Also i got a pretty bad initial breakout but i was okay with that. But then, last weekend, i went out drinking, and drank WAY to much. I didn't throw up, black out, or feel any different from when i wasn't on Accutane, but since then it seems like all my side effects has severely diminished. I'm still a little dry, but not way as much as i was before drinking. It's now been a week since the night were i drank, and i'm still not experiencing the same level of dryness as i did before.. I drank about 10 beers.

That's a lot of alcohol. I think if the drinking episode caused enough damage to your liver that it would inhibit it's ability to process the drug than you would be noticing other symptoms of liver damage, such as ethargy, yellow stools, yellow skin, vomiting/diarrhea, bloating, etc.

That being said, I would NOT do that again if I were you. Drinking while on accutane can cause huge problems for the liver. The fact that you're young may have been a protective factor in why you didn't experience issues *this time*, but that might not be the case for next time as these things do have a cumulative effect. At the best, you'll make your triglycerides and liver enzymes sky rocket and your derm will take you off the medication (no good for your acne!) at worst, you'll cause serious liver damage which can lead to alcohol induced hepatitis, cirrhosis, and/ or liver failure. It should be noted, an occasional drink every once in a while is probably fine (like 1 or 2 beers MAXIMUM maybe once a week at the most) but 10 beers is not good for anyone, much less someone on accutane.

All that being said, are you eating enough fat when you take your pills? Make sure to take them with a high-fat meal as taking them on an empty stomach can seriously diminish their absorption (I read somewhere that absorption of accutane while fasting drops by like 70%!). If your diet is fine, then I would discuss it with your derm next time you see him/her. Maybe you need an increased dose.

Okay, thanks a bunch. I will definetly not drink as much for the rest of my treatment, reading what you just said. But what you're saying is, that if by any means indangered my liver, i would be able to notice? Anyways, im getting blood tested by the start of next month, can i be pulled of the drug if i certain results appear?

The reason why i drank so much, is that my dermatoligist didn't tell me anything about alcohol, when he delivered me the drug, and neither was i able to read anything about it in the warning's and rules note, that was given to me along with the pills. I just really regret drinking that much, hopefully my liver will make it..

you should go and do a blood test and also check your liver condition, don't joke with that you can get into REAL troubles, then acnes will look like funny thing next to serious problems..

About drinking, most of drugs won't work 100% if you drink alcholol while taking them, that's why you should avoid drinkig a lot, so the medication can work correctly.

Hi - no, I am not saying that if you had liver damage you would notice (actually, liver damage is so insidious that you may not know you have it until it gets severe). The liver can heal itself to a certain extent, and since you are young, your liver can recover much more quickly and efficiently. But every time your liver has to heal itself (say, after a really bad binge drinking episode), there is a risk for scarring. Of course, this risk is much lower in people who are young and healthy, however, mixing alcohol with accutane does raise the risk (as do medications like tylenol). That being said, if scarring DOES occur, it's cumulative, so every time you do damage to your liver (by drinking too much, say), scarring becomes more likely until eventually it interferes with the liver's ability to function.

For your case, I don't think one bout of binge drinking is going to impede your liver's ability to absorb accutane, but if it dud, you would probably notice more issues than just a decrease in side effects. There are other, more likely explanations for the decrease in side effects than liver damage. I would just completely and totally avoid drinking except in VERY special occasions, and even then, I would limit it to no more than 1 drink.

As for the blood tests, yes, if your liver counts are abnormally high, your dermatologist may want to take you off the drug until they return to normal. In order to avoid this happening, I would completely stop drinking until your dermatologist appointment. Make sure to tell them what happened (they will understand that you didn't know the drug's issues with alcohol) so that they can take that into account when they read your lab results.

Alright, thanks a bunch. Since my mothers a nurse, i am able to take some blood tests already next week, instead of a month. I really appreciate all you've said, im definietly going to cut off alcohol for the rest of my Accutane course. Cheers!
