Hi all,

I went to the dermetologist today and asked about spironolactone. She told me that for the past 2 or 3 years dermatologists haven't been able to prescribe it for acne because it's only approved for high blood pressure. Anyone else heard that?

I have tried almost everything else and was really curious about it.

False. Mine was prescribed by a derm. You just have to keep looking. Call ahead and ask the office if they prescribe it before you make a new appointment.

Thanks for the response! I'm so frustrated! The dermetologist prescribed me over $700 worth of creams and antibiotics that I have no interest in. Guess I'll call around!

yeah call around my derm gave me spiro too. she wanted me to take it like 3 years ago and i was hesitant and then i ended up with more scarring so thank god i got on it last year. best thing i ever did for my skin. when you do start it though i would recommend taking a good antibiotic at first to avoid any nasty breakouts until it starts working.

one more thing most endocrinologists prescribe spiro as well so if you cant find a derm go the endo route.

My dermatologist also prescribed me Spironolactone.... I agree with tracy521 about taking an antibiotic the first few months of starting Spiro, I had a horrible break out 1 month in and so glad I had Minocycline to help with the IB. I have to say that I absolutely love Spironolactone, it has done wonders for my acne and those horrible cysts I used to get. I am now in my 7th month and thing are only getting better n better. Hope you fine someone who will prescribe it to you! Good Luck :)

Spironolactone is prescribed off-label for acne. Your dermatologist is right that it is not approved for this use, and so there are quite a lot of them who won't prescribe it.

Depending on where you are from, and the dermatologist you see, you will find that there are lots of them out there doing it. So "call around" is the best advice.

However, just so you know, your derm is not a jerk - they are actually completely right, it's just that most other derms don't care.
