Im considering accutane and want to make sure I am fully informed about accuatane before I make a decision.

Just wondering if the age you took accutane at say in your teens was related to more severe long term side effects in comparison to taking accutane when your older?

Also do side effects seem more common in males vs females or vice versa?

If anyone has any answers or information I would really appreciate it, thanks :)

Hi,

I am not a dermatologist, but I play one on TV.

Obviously I am kidding, but I have done quite a bit of research on accutane and am on it myself. From what I have read, the age at which you take accutane does not predispose you to severe long-term side effects. Severe long term side effects are rare for everyone. Make sure you get the monthly blood tests and take your medication exactly as prescribed, and you should be fine.

However, age and likelihood of relapse are somewhat related. No causal effect has been established, but it does appear that the risk of relapse increases the younger you are when you take your course. This could be for several reasons, but it is only a correlation.

Women and men experience mainly the same side effects. Research does show that women are more likely to experience lower back pain as a side-effect, although the reason is unknown (at least, I haven't seen anyone posit anything).
