Hi!

My acne over the last year has gotten much worse than in my teens. Only the last two years has it become out of control and there have been no signs of stopping. My doctor suggested Accutane. My only concern is the initial breakout and the dry skin/lips that will prevent me from wanting to really leave the house.

I'm hoping to start it the beginning of May. I have a vacation planned for August. I need to know if I will hate my life (more than I already do) on my trip!

Also does anyone have any tips for preventing severely dry lips/skin and the bad breakout to start?

It varies from person to person. Day 68 here and I am still breaking out, albeit not as badly, and my lips are still extremely dry. About 87 more days to go!

I am currently using Blistex Relief Cream on my lips. It's primarily used for cold sores but is also used for cracked and chapped lips. It leaves them feeling really soft again. Gone through too many tubes of it to count. For the breakouts, there is really not anything you can do. Youre not supposed to use harsh creams / face washes whilst on Accutane because it can be more damaging then good.

What you should do now and whilst you are on accutane instead of using creams and face washes is to wash your face with dove soap and water before bed, wait 10 minutes and they apply some Cetaphil moisturiser. Try not to pick at your acne whilst you are on it, again makes it worse and will most definitely leave large red marks because your sink is more delicate whilst taking this stuff.

Good luck.

I can't say about the Initial breakout (mine started in the 4th week and lasted about 10 days, but many people don't even have one) but the dry lips last throughout the course. Use SPF Chapstick and aquafor, avoid licking them, and avoid drying products like lip stain or long-wear lipstick as It will only make things look and feel worse. I recommend avoiding lipstick altogether, but you'll find what's best for you.
