Hi,

I'm sorry for asking the dreaded question but I've been on the fence for way too long and need all the advice I can get on Accutane.

I've battled acne for many years now - from teenage acne to adult cystic acne. I currently suffer from cysts along my cheeks, chin and jawline. The only things that worked for my skin were Benzoyl peroxide (in high school) and the Pill (adult acne)...however, after a year or so of coming off the pill, I decided to try again because my skin was just out of control. The weird thing is, the Pill no longer works for me. I am still breaking out. I thought my problem was hormonal, but it doesn't solve the problem anymore and the doc/derm has advised me a couple of times to try Accutane.

I've been pushing the idea aside due to the fear of all the side effects. I already have dry eyes and mouth and am worried it will affect my health.

Any advice/personal experiences will be much appreciated!

all acne is hormonal actually, but that doesn't mean "imbalance" - you have acne because your sebaceous glands are extra sensitive to normal hormonal flucations and your pores don't shed properly which results in infection (what we identify as acne). Accutane works so well because:

- It shinks the oil glands so regardless of how sensitive you are to testosterone your oil glands can't be stimulated (if that makes sense)

- It allows the pores to shed normally (proper exfolliation)

- It pushes up all the infection and allows your skin to heal

Definitely try it. It's a wonderful drug and very effective, sometimes the acne comes back but this isn't very often in the majority of acne patients.

Thanks for the reply,

Have you tried Accutane before? If so, what were the side effects during and post-accutane?

You need to try it. Wish I had it in early 20s i stead of late 20's. Would have reduced scarring. Scarring is the worst. Dont screw around and get on it asap!
