I just started roaccutane today. A sixteen week course, with the first six weeks taking 30mg a day and then 60mg until the end of the course. The doctor described my acne as moderate, but has put me on this drug because it has been cronic for three years and causing me distress after private as well as cosmetic proceedures failed to help. Reading some other posts on here, that seems like I have too much for a moderate case, compared to othere whos acne is much worse.
What do you guys think?
I found dosage info from this website: http://www.drugs.com/dosage/accutane.html
"The recommended dosage range for Accutane is 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg/day given in two divided doses with food for 15 to 20 weeks."
I am a male with 6'1" height and 185~190 (~85 kg) pounds. I used to take Accutane when I had cystic acne. I took 2 pills a day, in the morning and night, which sums up to 20 mg per day. I took around 400 pills (200 days) at first, then took another 200 pills later 1 year after. That is a grand total of 6000 mg. According to the formula above, The maximum I could have taken is 85*1*20*7 = 11,900 mg and minimum I could have taken is half of that. I took the minimum dosage and worked fine for me.
Hey,
I am currently on my second course of accutane. My current derm believes there is a reason why. She thinks that I wasn't prescribed the correct dosage my first time which was back in 2010. I still weigh the same. I am 5'11 and weigh 135lbs. I think I was 5'9 or 5'10 during my first course. My first course I was prescribed 40 mg my first month and then dropped down to 20 mg for the remainder of my course of about five months. My current derm said that i should be taking more than that since I basically weigh the same. I am currently on 40 mg daily and once next month hits, I will be on 60 mg daily to make sure my acne doesn't return. Of course there are many contributing factors as to why it returned but she said that was the main cause. But if your derm believes you should be taking that dosage, take it. If you are experiencing really bad side effects, your prescriber can lower your dosage. My acne cleared up dramatically during my first course even with that low dosage.....it just sucks that it came back. So if your weight or height falls anywhere near me or the other post above me, compare. Hope that helps!
