Hey
I just got back from a week away in the sun and when I left home I forgot to take my tablets with me so I went a week without the tablets. I've been back for 2 days and i've still not taken them.
I only have about a month left of a 6 month course but I have a ridiculous amounts of red marks all over my face. I have like 1 active, then loads of sort of tiny scabby things. The rest is just red marks. Now from what i've read, red marks start to clear after a month off the tablets as it has then left your system. I can't stand the marks anymore so i've decided that im going to stop early so my marks can start to heal. Meeting my derm tmoz to discuss it but I adamant. I will just ask to continue on antibiotics.
So my questions are;
- How long will it take for red marks to start fading? A month like I read?
- Has anyone else done the same sort of thing and how did it turn out?
Thanks!
Very strongly advise you not to stop your tablets early, particularly if it's because of red marks (if it'd been for serious joint pain/persistent nose bleeds etc that would be more understandable). Surely another 4 weeks of blotchy skin is bearable? Stating the obvious I know, but your chance of long-term remission will be much lower by stopping now - then you might have to go on accutane again, and nobody wants to do that if they can avoid it.
As for red marks, if you have quite prominent ones (I did) then they can take 7-8 months to fade properly which is quite frustrating. But yeah after about a month of stopping accutane your healing rate will be back to normal again.
Best of luck
Don't do it! You are FAR more likely to have your acne come back if you do not finish your course. Why risk it when you only have a few weeks to go? Red marks take a while to heal, Accutane or not, they will not magically disappear if you stop taking it. Just think of how pissed off you will be if you DO go off your meds and your acne comes back. Is it worth it?
Before I started the tablets I had about 4 spots on one side of my face. Since i've been on the tablets I've had my face pretty much destroyed by the tablets in terms of marks and such. Thing is, I really don't mind having a spot or two like I did before the tablets, but the red marks are really starting to screw with my life at the moment in terms of not wanting to go out or anything. I know its a risk stopping it a month early but i'm not really fussed if I start getting some spots after stopping. It's just at the moment, the tiniest possible scab will be EXTREMELY red and make it a lot worse than it is.
Basically I just want the healing process to begin now :/. I'll have a chat with my derm tmoz and see what they say about it. Thanks for the advice.
I totally hear where you are coming from. I had a NASTY initial breakout from the course of Accutane I am on now (it is my second - first kept me clear for 9 years, but my acne is hormonal and came back when I went off the pill). Even though my skin has cleared up A LOT now, I have so many nasty red marks. The Accutane brought everything up and out at once, and even the tiny things are taking FOREVER to go away. Fortunately for me, I am a girl and can cover up most of the red with makeup pretty well.( I'm assuming you are male because your name is Dan). If I didn't have that, I might feel differently. But, after everything I've been through, I am FOR SURE finishing this damn course. Because I have walked this road twice, I can say that I would WAY rather wait a bit on the red marks than go through it again. Successive courses DO NOT get easier. They are usually harder, so I just think it is wise to do anything you can to try and avoid it, and a few more weeks isn't that big a deal. BUT, like I said, I have my camouflage makeup so I can't know how you are feeling, and you should make the choice that you feel is best. Hope it goes well!
Recently my sister has been lightly covering it for me as it is mainly just marks, its not noticeable really unless you are actually looking to see if I have anything on. Being male, I really don't want to keep covering it up as its a pain in the ass and not usually a part of my daily routine. Also, I don't do a very good job of it. I've had a spot mark on my arm for about 4 months now and i've noticed in the 10 days i've been off the tablets its actually starting to fade now. So hopefully thats a good sign.
I never had red marks before starting the tablets. Ever. So I am hoping I can go back to that.
