Hello everyone,

After my current prescription has completely failed to make any difference on my complexion, I want to try something new, however I am very hesitant about trying accutane as I'm not sure how well my body will handle it. I am hoping your expertise can guide me to a solution other than isotretinoin, if one exists.

Things I have tried over the years:

Stievamycin - not much effect if memory serves

Benzoyl Peroxide - my skin has a terrible reaction to this medication, even in low doses

Salicylic Acid - have used this in many many forms. little effect

Minocycline - it worked excellently, but I stopped taking it after a number of months because it is unhealthy to take antibiotics indefinitely. Acne reappeared after a couple months without the medication. I haven't taken it since because of some of the side effects that have been reported, plus I don't think it will work a second time. Instead I tried:

Tetracycline - no effect

Doxycycline[most recent] - no effect, I thought it was slowly working until this week when my skin got worse than before I started.

Just some background information: I have had acne with varying severity for coming up to four years. My acne is currently moderate or moderate-severe, but not cystic. I'm looking for a recommendation from someone with a similar experience, who did not respond to the above medications but did to something else. Thank you.

Your story sounds like mine. Moderate acne that hardly ceased, despite several attempts with different creams, antibiotics, etc.

I'm currently on Accutane and my skin has almost completely cleared after 4 months. (Let's hope it stays that way) Accutane is a serious drug and can give some people serious side effects. From what I've dealt with so far, I would recommend it, but you should definitely do your research (and lots of it) about it before making the decision to go ahead with it.

Good luck!
