I literally just got back from the dermatologist right now and I am super happy I got prescribed accutane!!
I am a 21 yr old male who has been battling acne for close to 6 years. I would describe my acne as moderate. I get quite a few under the skin cysts, nothing too painful and a bunch of whiteheads, I have around 15 pimples on my face at all times, and the scarring makes it look like I have more. I would never identify my acne as severe though.
I booked my dermatologist appointment about a month ago when my acne was at its absolute worst. I did a whole lot of research and read testimonies on accutane, and finally decided I was going to give it a go. My acne did calm down a bit though during that time so I was worried my derm wouldn't prescribe accutane for my moderate acne. During that month I kept reciting a speech on what I was going to say to him to convince him I needed this drug, thinking about it multiple times a day.
So a month passes and the day finally comes. I arrive outside my dermatologists office 30 minutes early, super nervous wondering what I would do if he wouldn't give me this drug. So I finally meet my derm and he was honestly one of the nicest doctors I have met right off the bat. I told him I was here for treating my acne, he told me to take my shirt off to look at my back. I thought to myself "ah crap, I barely have any acne on my back. this isn't going to go my way". Turns out I had more bacne than I thought. He then asked me if I had been on any antibiotics in the past. I told him I had been on doxycycline in the past. He asks me if it had even effective, I say no and immediately he smiles and understands my situation.
He sits me down and to my surprise he actually asked ME how I wanted to treat my acne. I cut straight to the chase and said I had heard about this drug that can permanently cure acne. Immediately he agrees that would be the best treatment option for me. I felt like I was dreaming. I barely had to do any talking or convincing... And I realised I worried about everything for nothing.
So he hands me a booklet, tells me about oratane and all the side effects and I had to sit there pretending like I didn't know about the drug, lol. Basically he said to me what I had read over and over in the past month and I pretended like it was new information. I think deep down he knew I had done my research though!
He told me I'd be on the medication for 6-8 months and sounded 100% confident it would get rid of my acne. He gave me 2 blood test sheets and said he would mail me the prescription after he got the results. He put me on 20mg a day and told me to see him in 10weeks.
This was my first ever visit to the dermatologist and I thought they would push me stupid antibiotics or creams first but nope my derm went straight to the chase and gave me the option to choose what I wanted. It was honestly one of the best experiences I have had with a doctor (even though I had to pay near 200dollars for 10 minutes of his time I kid you not!) but it was well worth it in my opinion.
To anyone thinking of seeing a derm for the first time and getting accutane, don't be worried that they won't prescribe it to you! Just talk to your derm and things just might work out your way!
I can't wait to start my course
