My Eyelashes Are Falling Like Snow. What?

My dosage got bumped up this month from 40mg per day to 60mg per day and for the last few weeks my eyelashes have been falling out like crazy! I don't think it's a coincidence. I now make a special effort not to touch my eyes or mess with them, but even when I wake up in the morning I'll have 4 or 5 stuck to my cheeks. Is this normal? Will they grow back? I mean they're significantly, noticeably thinner than before I started taking Accutane.

my eyelashes, eyebrows body hair and scalp hair all thinned significantly and never regrew in thickness. and years later hair falls out prematurely. i would lower your dosage or quit treatment if possible.

Well that sounds nothing short of annoying - sorry to hear that was a part of your experience =/... I'm feeling fortunate the hair on my head has gotten a lot thicker, and my eyebrows/any hair on my body stayed the same thus far. It seems it's just my eyelashes that don't want to hang around for the ride. I told my derm. and she put me back down to 40mg the day before yesterday, so, hopefully that'll do the trick. Thanks for the suggestion! Time will tell.

My advice would be to quit accutane until adverse effects clear up, then restart at a lower dose and watch carefully. You can use antibiotics in the meantime, but don't overlap due to risk of intracranial swelling.

Agreed. Go cold turkey, and once the side effects go away resume on 40 mg/day.

If you notice that the problem is still happening at the 40 mg I suggest stopping the medication, when the problem is over start slowly again on the medication. I know how frustrating this is because accutane is a drug you have to fight to get and you need to fail so many to get to this step. Some people have lasting effects from the medication and suffer for years and more. So that is something to be careful of. You do not want all of your hair falling out.

On my course right after the end my hair on my head started to really thin out. Everytime I showered or took a bath I would see more and more hair fall out. I was getting really scared from all the horror stories you read about side effects. I started going days between wasting my hair and braiding it some didn't stress it. I was a freak about my hair, sure enough as the accutane left my system my hair stopped falling out. It took a couple of months maybe up to 3 months for the issue to stop. My hair never regained it's original thickness though. That my experience with hair loss on accutane. There is another member that had a room mate who went bald from the medication.

Keep in mine accutane is a low dose chemotherapy so hair loss happens to some people and not to others. Just like when people are fighting cancer and it's hit or miss if they lose their hair. Just listen to your body and of course your dermatologist and follow the plan and if you get worried or scared make sure you talk to your doctor about your concerns and if you need to stop your course for a bit it's ok.

Since I'm halfway through my 4th month on an estimated 6 month treatment plan, I am 100% not open to the idea of quitting right now.

But it's been about 12 days since I went back down to 40mg and it seems my lashes aren't falling out very much anymore. A few here and there.. no big deal though.

It still is strange to me that the hair on my head has gotten so much thicker, but my eyelashes have thinned way out. ..?.... lol. So be it.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Androgens can promote male-pattern baldness and body hirsutism in women (especially those with PCOS) -- it seems like you're experiencing the reverse!

Are you taking birth control with accutane? My hair grew like crazy when on accutane! Not to say this will happen to you but about 2 months off the drug hair started thinning and falling out like crazy!

Good know the eyelashes have let up since lowering dose :)

No, I chose to just abstain from sex for the time being. Were you on BC when you were doing your cycle? Also, did the thickness of your hair ever return to normal?

Hello everyone. Bad news im afraid regarding my experience with accutane. I am over a year post treatment and dependent on castor oil to nourish my eyelashes, applying day and night. Missing a few days results in drying and shedding. I have many bald patches from this and not to mention it is not improving on it own. Moreover, half my hair has changed texture from wavy to coarse frizzy dry unruly hair. Idk wat to do but hope the accutane leaves my body, though its been over a year since. Not to mention my body hardly produces oil for my skin, I have ashes on my legs and must apply lotion to my face or it gets irritated and starts to itch and turn red. Dont ever take it. And yes my skin is 90 still clear using the right products
