Stopping Spironolactone

I've been on Spironolactone since November(ish) of 2011. I can't stand this medication. It has caused irregular periods and I have some type of menstrual flow almost constantly. And subsequently, I often feel crampy, bloated, and miserable. Due to sensitivities to hormonal oral contraceptives (I've tried them all), I can't take them to regulate my cycle. I am going on Accutane on December 3rd, and I'd really like to stop Spironolactone immediately, I'm at the end of my rope. Has anyone gone through this before? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go off of the medication? I'd like to minimize breakouts, but at this point, I'll suffer through anything if it means stopping the constant bleeding.

Have you tried cycling spiro? I had 2 days of bleeding in the middle of my periods but wasn't a big problem for me and actually i have never tried it but it could help you.

I went off cold-blooded.. hadn't any other choice actually. I started breaking out like i used to before spiro about a couple of months later. You could wean off of it but i don't know if this actually makes a difference.

My advice to you would be to ask your physician...the same physician who prescribed this medication and started you on this. If this physician is not available, you could always check with the pharmacy regarding this medication. Some medications can not be stopped abruptly. This medication I am not sure about... you may have to slowly taper yourself off of this or wean yourself off of it due to the side effect of having a bad acne flare-up.

Start taking half your dose over the next 3 weeks, then stop taking it completely after that.

I agree with weaning off any type of hormonal treatment, although I have no experience with spironolactone. You probably don't want to hear this since it sounds like you are ready to jump on another drug, but I think you should give inositol a try. It might be all you need. I made a thread about it if you need more info, and I back up my own experiences with actual clinical studies. It might even help keep your cycles regular, which accutane won't help with that. I think your body could use a break. You are ready to wean off something you have been taking for 2 years, and it's obviously had a toll on your body, so why not give your body (esp. liver) a break? Accutane is no cure for hormonal acne anyway, just a temporary crutch. I know you don't want to hear this since you are determined to try accutane, but I wanted to point out that there are other options out there if bcp and spiro haven't worked for you.

I think my acne is not so much hormonal as it is genetic. My periods were regular before Spironolactone, and I never had flares with my period. I tend to have the same amount of spots all of the time. I was tested for hormonal imbalances twice, and nothing. I suppose that's why the hormonal treatments didn't work. Everyone female and male in my family has the same acne as I do. I appreciate your suggestion, but after 15 years of acne, I'm not going to try anything else. I'm tired of toying with treatments and diets that don't work. It's time for me to bring out the big guns and try Accutane. Others in my family have had success with it, so there isn't any reason that I shouldn't as well.

Green gables, I will do as you say and cut it in half first, thank you 🙂
