When Should I Take My Roaccutane Tablets?

so i'm on 30mg a day and also take a fish oil capsule. i have to take three pills a day as i was given a few boxes containing 20mg tablets and a few boxes containing 5mg tablets. before i was given them i was told the usual routine information including to take them with a high fat meal, however i was then also told to try and avoid high fat foods eusa_eh.gif i don't really have many high fat foods anyway so i've just stuck to my normal diet, which is why i got the fish oil capsules. i've just been taking everything all together (the three pills and the fish oil capsule) in the morning after i've had my breakfast which is normally fruit. however i read some posts on here where people were saying they spread their tablets out throughout the day, taking one in the morning and one before bed and stuff like that - so my question is should i be doing this or is the way i'm taking them now ok? and does is matter that i'm not really eating high fat foods? it just made me paranoid that i might be hindering the processmellow.png

I asked my derm about spreading the tablets out throughout the day but she told me to just take them all at once.

You were told to take them with fat because they are fat soluble and will be absorbed best like this.

I think the reason you were told not to eat lots of fatty foods was probably because Roaccutane puts stress on your body and it's best to try and keep it healthy when you're on it. Does that make sense? :)

yeah i guess as long as you take the full dose in some way, it wouldn't really matter too much anywaysmile.png

what you're saying makes sense, but i don't understand how, if i'm meant to avoid fatty foods, i can take the tablets with something containing a lot of fat? i'm just hoping that the fact that i don't take them with a high fat meal won't have any impact on the effectiveness.

I'm confused now :P I think having something fatty with a meal (e.g. butter) is okay as it will help absorption but it's saying don't have a diet that is constantly high in fat as this may cause more health problems :)

Anyway, good luck! :)

I was confused about this too... I'm taking 30mg and they only come in 10mg tablets. My doctor told me to take 10mg 3 times daily, but then the pharmacist told me to take them all at once... I decided to take them 3 times daily because I thought it would be better to have a constant stream of the medicine in the body instead of just a huge dose all at once that would be a shock to the body. But what do I know?

I think it's important to eat healthy on Accutane but it is important to have some fat when you take the tablets. Just having it with fruit probably isn't the best idea. Throwing in 20 almonds would help, or a bit of peanut butter.

haha sorry! yeah good point,i think i was just being overly paranoid about the fact fat was a necessity when taking the tablets but as long as i stay healthy aside from that it shouldn't be too bad right?

wow you're four years younger than me and ten times more intelligentlol.gif

thanks for the helpbiggrin.png

it's stupid, i wish they'd just get the right size tablets in stock but i can't really complain seeing as i'm getting them via the nhs. yeah that's the same logic i was beginning to adapt when thinking about what to do yesterday. i literally forget everything though and already occasionally think at night before bed "oh shit i didn't take my tablets earlier!" so i'd end up taking two and forgetting about the last one or something like that. i should be ok as long as i start taking them with a high fat food do you think? anyway, i'll double check with my dermatologist at my next appointment.

thanks for this, happened to have some almonds to hand so i have just done that this secondbiggrin.png starting to realise the importance of this factor so i'm definitely going to make sure i'm doing it properly from now on.

Fat is healthy, transfats are not, big difference.

I drink olive oil like water for weightlifting cals and my overall cholesterol is much lower than the average in my country.

yeah see i like to think of myself as fairly healthy when i want to be but anything more complex than junk food is bad and fruit/vegetables are healthy confuses merolleyes.gif

i'm just gonna make sure i start having something higher in fat for breakfast and continue to eat healthy for the rest of the day i guess.

Extra virgin olive oil is your friend, as are 100% nut butters ie nothing but crushed nuts.

Low fat diets IMO ate not optimal for health.

You drink olive oil like water?! That cannot be healthy.
