Hey

So anyway this is kinda gross, I'm on day 34 of 40mg a day accutane. For the past few days I have had stomach cramps and diahhrea (having to go to the toilet every 20 minutes. Im not sure if its simply food poisoning or something worse. I kept going to the toilet and just then i woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't hold it, it literally came out as a more clear liquid substance, not a more solid substance however. Anyhow i made it to the toilet and upon inspection I noticed blood in it which was bright to medium red in color.

Sorry to gross you out, I'm Just worried because I don't want to go off the medication, its finally starting to kick in.

Previously a few weeks earlier I did have some stomach cramps and wind but no diarrhea and that subsided.

Do you think this could be something serious or just because I have been going to the toilet a lot. There is no pain down there so I don't believe it's a hemorrhoid.

Cheers

Contact the dermatologist and they will tell you what to do. Sounds like you're having symtpoms of IBS which can cause hemorrhoids (red blood in stool is usually from hemorrhoids).

Bright red blood is usually from hemorrhoids. Its when the blood is very dark or even black that means you have some internal bleeding in the intestines which is bad.

Yeh i will contract her now, however I do beleive this is a case of gastro as I am suffering from fever and cold sweats. Also I dont think IBS makes you go to the toilet consistantly every 20 minutes for 2 days so hopefully it's nothing big. I might just mention the blood has not returned in my stool... Im not sure if it could be a hemmorhoid because arent they usually painfull? I don't have any pain at all except for cramping. Thanks :)

Thanks buddy, aren't hemorrhoids usually very painful tho? I don have any pain around the rectum just internal cramping of the lower abdominal area. Im pretty sure its Gastro bacterial infection but ill still consult with a doctor.

Well my Derm isn't working today so I had to leave a message, the receptionist said not to take any more tablets but that will screw up my cycle. I really believe this is from a bacterial inflection causing inflammation so I don't want to. Should I hit up a GP (MD in the us) for a second opinion?

Thanks for the advice everyone. Just to fill you in my derm contacted me and said if it has stopped then it is not really anything the worry about, if it was a 24 hour - few days type thing then it would have been some type of food poisoning. As for the blood it was likely due to inflammation of the bowels from the bacteria causing the damage or just because I was continuously going. Just for the record I didn't stop taking my pills which I'm glad or else I would be thinking it was due to the pills. I'm fine now. My derm did say also that you can stop taking the medication for up to a week if need be, it will not alter the outcome when you go back on it.

p.s. She is not one to just throw the medication around for benefits or is trying to push it on me as it may have come across, she is highly credited and put two of her kids on accutane, which apparently worked wonders for. One of the major turning points for me to begin this journey.

Again thanks for all the support smile.png

With all due respect, there is no evidence for this statement whatsoever. See for example a large case-control study:

http://archderm.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1654866

It states that:

"The results of this study do not suggest an increase in the risk for IBD, including UC or CD, with use of isotretinoin. Because inflammatory acne in children and adolescents carries a high psychological burden, clinicians should not be discouraged from prescribing this drug owing to a putative association with IBD."

Best regards,

Steve.

Really cause the evidence of the effect of accutane on the intestines came out in evidence on court and Roche has never denied it! I've watched the trials!

With all due respect nobody told the OP not to take it, he was complaining of bloody stools and such! We told him to contact his physician in which he did!

By the way only 10 and 191 controls out of the 2,000 something had been exposed to accutane! Big deal!

Accutane is a potent drug it's not all roses!
