I've had mild to moderate acne for many years, which worsened enough a few years ago that I had to take Accutane. That helped for a few years. However, I recently had my daughter and my acne picked up a bit again. When I stopped nursing about 3 months ago, my skin went nuts. My derm put me on Spironolactone and I've been on it for about 6 weeks. (I also started using Proactiv). My skin is clearing up very slowly (the verdict is out whether it's the spiro or the Proactiv), but now I'm developing melasma! No BCP involved and it's not just sun exposure in my case (I had it really bad years ago on BCP w/spiro, hence why I'm worried now). I'm also using a Retin A product...I read all of this could be making my skin ultra sensitive and might contribute to melasma. Obagi has helped me in the past, but I want to stop Spiro if that's the cause. Has anyone else had this happen with spiro?
Oh hell yes! Totally happened to me for the first time in my life in 2008 3 weeks after I had my son. My acne was so severe during pregnancy that I wanted whatever that was left over afterwards to clear up fast. So my derm gave me spiro. It actually is a great drug for numerous things, but in some cases like ours, it causes melasma. I had the hitler moustache and one circle under each eye. I used hydroquinone and it cleared up in days but it wasn't too dark to begin with. Just ugly as hell. Now I really just have to use sunblock and avoid the sun being on my face. Well good luck with you and feel free to ask me any questions!
Thank you, very glad to know I'm not alone!! I started back on Obagi which has the hydroquinone so I hope that will help. I still can't get control of the acne though. It's getting a little better but still lots of bumps. So embarrassing. What did you do to clear the acne? I can't take the spiro any more because my melasma is getting dark; I'm not sure it was helping anyway. Prior to baby, I used Obagi and a light benz perox wash and my skin looked so nice! Maybe all I need is time...

Sorry for the delayed response.. When i wasnt pregnant this is what i did. I cleaned up my diet. That was the most important thing I could have done. Next I followed with a strict regimen. Washing twice a day, icing, oxy wipes and treatment--- can be BP, glycolic/mandelic/salicylic acid serums or Retin-a! It depends on what my skin is like. I also like to switch it up. I moisturize in the day time only which may not be good for other peoples skin and I use sunscreen EVERYDAY! Facials are extremely important and Help tremendously when you see someone experienced. Now I haven't touched hydroquinone since 2010. I found a holy grail but you can inbox me if you want any info. Completely removes my melasma any time it creeps up. I use it 2-3 times a week usually. But I take a q tip and hardly touch the areas that may get affected just to let it get something on it. Melasma makes me anxious and depressed so I'll do anything it takes to keep it gone.

Thanks so much for all the advice 🙂 My skin is still clearing up slowly, but my cheeks just won't give. Driving me bleeping nuts. What salicylic acid serum do you use? I use Differin Cream as my "retin-A", but it's pretty weak. Retin A makes me peel pretty bad, but I hear it gives great results. I do need to clean up my diet; I started exercising regularly again and that always help me out.
